Is anybody out there running Far Cry on Vista successfully ? I normally play under XP64, so I wanted to try it on Vista 64. The install runs fine, the amd64 patch runs fine, and the system starts and everything looks normal - including the usual 'flly through' on the main menu.
But then I actually start the game I get just black and white rectangles (well an entirely black screen with one white rectangle). These move as I use the controls so it looks like the game is running - but it ins't rendering properly. Has anyone else seen this ? I am using a Radeon and the shipped Vista RC1 Radeon drivers. meanwhile, back to XP64 |

Installed it in RC1 worked fine. The only issue was that sometimes during map changes in MP. the screen would drop to the background of the welcome screen and show the FC splash screen but it would then go back to the game and let me choose teams.
No issues in game either as far as video. XFX 780i Mobo | Quad Core Q6700 | 4GB RAM | 2x7950GT's SLI | 2x300GB | 250GB SATA's | |

Interesting - and that was 64 bit Visa and 64 bit Far Cry, yes ? What graphics card are you using in that case, that might be my problem.

I have WinVista64 rc1 and am running FC64 well. Except I cannot save settings. If I change res to 1280x1024 and hit appy the settings go back to 1024x768. Same with audio. Plays fine though. Takes longer to install!!!

This post refers to 32 bit Windows, as I'm not using 64 bit versions of WinXP or Vista.
Upgraded from WinXP to Vista RC1.5600 & Far Cry (1.33) still worked, but slower & more glitches than WinXP. Went to Vista RC1.5728 & Far Cry 1.33 worked better. However, upon trying to apply the 1.4 patch, major problems began! The patch installed only once correctly as I used the 1.4 ALL version. Upon running FC 1.4 online, I found the game slower, many disconnects, PB acted crazy at times. Overall, didn't like the new 1.4v, but wanted to give it a fair try. So, I uninstalled all FC from computer. A fresh install is usually a good thing. Could never get FC 1.4 installed again on Vista.5728! Upgraded to Vista RC2.5744. Used the great DOC patch to install FC v1.33. FC ran better than ever. This new Vista build is working well. After uninstalling FC 1.33 (DOC version), I tried to get fresh install of FC 1.4, using every possible upgrade path. Nothing worked. Windows installer errors or data configuration errors prevented correct install. As experienced user, I did VERY thorough cleaning of FC or sys files & reg entries from computer between tries. The conclusion I came to was that Vista handles Windows installer files in a different way. From FC 1.3 & up, the same problems happen. I could not find a work-around. Has anybody here clean installed Vista.5744 & clean installed FC to 1.4 successfully? I'm back on FC v1.33 (DOC version) & that does run great with this latest build of Vista. The 1.4 patch was for the 32bit version of FC only. I dont believe there will be a 64bit version of the 1.4 patch for FC. |

IceT-Bag,
Thanks for the reply. I am referring to the 32 bit version. (not running 64 bit Windows) Sorry, that should have been made clearer in original post. Please reply back. |

I don't have vista installed, im running XP Pro...but here we go anyway:
As far as Im aware, you cannot patch from 1.33 to 1.4 using the 1.4 standalone patch since the installer checks the registry to make sure you have version 1.0.
When 1.4 was released, many servers patched to it but didnt update their PB configs. This caused numerous kicks. Any server running a SSM not optimised for 1.4 will have issues. Such as spawning with half-armour. When 1.4 was released NO SSM was optimised for it. I've heard that a new version of the GodLike SSM could be released for 1.4. Lots of players have experienced increased ULOST (UDP packets) since installing 1.4. This problem did not show itself during beta-testing. Im still unsure what causes this, but it does impact the quality of the gameplay as it increased lag and reduced hit detection (and portrays the weapon balancing in bad light).
FC has always been a pain to re-install if you have uninstalled a patched version. Some of the registry information isnt cleared when you uninstall FC. Have you tried using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove all FC entries from the registry. You should then be able to install FC and patch from 1.0 to 1.4 using the standalone patch. IceT-Bag,
Thanks for the detailed reply. Yes, I was able to install 1.4 once, with 1.4 ALL patch. The point was that at the time I had upgraded from WinXP to Vista.5600, & an install of 1.4 was possible, but only once. After that, 1.4 Full patch or 1.4 partial 1.33 to 1.4 patch, would not work. Then a fresh install of Vista & FC gave way to more install problems. I tried your suggestion & downloaded the Windows Install Clean Up progy. I noticed 1 entry for FC there, but a number of blank entries. So, I uninstalled the FC-DOC files, uninstalled FC using Windows Vista uninstall, did a registry search for Far Cry,Crytek, & Ubisoft--removed all found reg entries. Did a general reg cleanup. Checked HD to remove any other FC files left. Ran WICU & took out the FC entry & all blank entries (in case they were related to FC install problems before) Ok, Installed FC on Vista.5744 using original cds, which gets to v1.0. Checked WICU & saw 1 FC entry. Ran the 1.4 FULL patch & it worked! The Windows Installer did stop responding, like before, after waiting it kicked back in maybe 2 minutes later. This time the install finished, with no Installer error messages. It appears the WICU really helped. Your comments really helped clarify other issues as well, I appreciate the time you took to post. After going online, I experienced the known mouse problem (where you can't move around map by moving mouse), but this is fixed by resetting game options to defaults & then reset your choices. The game moved great & was very stable. It was the best online experience with the v1.4 overall so far. The PB problems can usually be corrected by manually installing PB files, so far I haven't had to do that.(like before) I'm not happy with all the changes in weapons, as the game is a little sterile now. Some corrections in weapon balance were needed, but FC designers went too far. Besides, there were always 1.33 servers with adjusted parameters for rockets, etc, that discouraged abusers. The 1.4 FC is a now a very different game. However, I'll certainly be trying v1.4 again, since it's running on this Vista setup, to give it a fair shake. The hard work that went in to reaching 1.4 is appreciated though, as the stability factor is much improved. You are asset to this Forum, IceT-Bag, many thanks. Your willingness to give, share & help is so valuable to the FC community. |

Im glad I was able to help you get it sorted DeviLduck9.
If you played the 1.33 version for a while, it will take some time to adopt to the changes implemented in 1.4. I know of a couple people who were going to leave FC after their first impressions of the 1.4 patch, but having played it some more they are starting to like it and are having fun again. Good luck with it Regards IceT |

Late post, but what you need to do to save settings in Far Cry in Vista is make sure you set the config exe to run with administrator permissions. You might also need to set it to run in XP SP2 compatibility mode. This should solve the saving settings issue and the graphics issue. You might also need to set the Far Cry x64 exe file to run with administrator permissions. |

I had exactly the same problem and found out that the problem was I had not uninstalled the 1.4 patch properly, once I did this strangely enough via the exe file it was installed off I reinstalled the 64 bit patch and it works perfectly now, does not need to be run in compatibility mode either - I'm on vista 64 bit retail using a Pentium D processor with nvidia 7600gs video card - hope this helps to some extent

For the past few days I have been trying to solve a similar problem to the one mentioned above, whereby Far Cry loads, runs and plays for a little while until it crashes. I have Windows Vista Home Premium, Core 2 Duo 2.2Ghz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, GeForce Go 8600M GT. Dell Inspiron 1720. For me, the problem seemed to go away after I installed MS .Net Framework v1.1 and MS .Net framework v1.1 SP1. I also have the shortcut on my desktop set to Windows XP SP2 compatibility and I run as adminstrator. To my delight it has not crashed at all since installing this. I hope this helps someone else. Thanks. I have also installed Far Cry patch v1.4. Vista Home Premium 32-bit.
