Kevin,

I agree - it is certainly nice to be rid of all the gogogogo-ers. Some are apparently still around, thinking that spamming will speed things up. Smile

Another observation we have made (might be true only for us), is that the server application now requires significantly less resources. Less RAM, less CPU power. And most importantly, the amount of RAM allocated by the process does not increase with time.

However, we miss the "shuffle teams" button. Now, even with voting, we notice that many players leave during the game, since the teams are unbalanced. That rarely happened before.

Perhaps we're missing something - and there is a way to open a console on the server?

We cant open the console on the server on its machine yet, but you can put this line in your appdata>local>punkbuster>pbsv.cfg file:
pb_sv_task 5 30 Net_shuffleteams
this makes it so teams are scrambled every 30 sec in the lobby. It would be nice if you could do that in-game though.

Also im so against anyone running a server on a personal computer and think its funny that most everyone still does now we have a true server launcher. Yes before with the high resource launcher we were forced to host personal server on our PCs cause no hosting company would touch the game but now? all hosting companies will be happy to host this game for you just like they have and do for all the popular games you see out there.

I am afraid that's not quite true. With my clan we host a lot of different games through a big european (german) gameserver provider. A choice of about 75 games are optional, but Far Cry 2 is still not one of them Sad

Actually today in Germany parliament is launching a plan to completely ban violent games by law and thus it might never happen to host FC2 through this provider.

At least than it is still better to be able to host from home. Usually dedicated servers are not that demanding on your hardware and mostly bandwith will be a limiting factor. Obviously you have to adjust the maximum players accordingly.

However if I had choice I would prefer hosting through the gameserver provider. Keeping in mind that it is not my intention to use any personal funding for hosting a server.

PS. I hope this dos not trigger a yes/no discussion Googly

I am really displeased with the new server. One improvement - the ability to set number of players - combined with the removal of practically all good features.

Dude... just use pbweb to kick/ban the guy... you can even perm ban... oh wait you don't run pb? too bad i guess....

Of course we're not using pb. Why would anyone do that....on a ranked server?

Diderik, intresting to hear about the new German law. I know that you're regulations are strict: A few months ago we wanted to buy some games in a large store in Berlin, but the sales guy discouraged us. Kept saying "This is the German version". He didn't know what the difference was, except that we would be better off buying the international version in some other country.

Do you know - is FC2 also cut in Germany?

Kev, thanx for the suggestion. We'll give that a try. It should help us get rid of the unbalanced teams. (Though unbalanced games may sometimes work: Yesterday we ended up playing 8v2 and one of the two killed 4-5 guys for every death and they won the game. Good and intense fight)

My post is updated with all necessary info + more to get your servers up and running. If you should need more info in advanced punbkuster admining then i would suggest you go to evenbalance.com and research there as there is WAY too much info for me to place in on forum post Smile.

From my testings the pb task wasnt shuffling the teams any more with net_shuffleteams, But you can use rcon to do this before each round.

Actually I am from the Netherlands where we don't have silly laws, all is legal here, perhaps even too many things Wink
However with my corporate clan we use a German gameserver provider for a wide variety of games. And it's true some games you cannot buy in Germany unless in a special version with green blood etc. I do not know about FC2. I always buy my games international, even in Australia, saves me a lot of cash Big Grin
Anyway we're a bit off topic I think..

Note: check my PDF with instructions how I go about generating custom maps mapcycles: http://forums.ubi.com/eve/foru...1007696/m/3121086267
Suggestions are welcome !

There are more threads on the PC Discusiion forum; you have to setsetting minplayers 8 not setsetting waitready. Waitready is an old server command and it no longer works.

For these lan-parties I always make sure I have a few configs prepared (and tested), because I don't want to much hassle at the party itself, I am there to have fun as well !
In this great thread is already al lot of good info, but perhaps I can add something extra from my experience.
Besides Lan-parties I also regulary host an online dedicated server with custom maps named Violent Playground. The server configs for this server I use as an example below.

The game is installed in C:\Far Cry 2 (I prefer a small path name for my server configs).

Copied the shortcut of the dedicated server (from the Start menu) to C:\Far Cry 2.
Also copied the dedicated_server.cfg (from My Games\Far Cry 2\Server\) to C:\Far Cry 2.

Renamed dedicated_server.cfg to VP_DM01.cfg and edited the file to a nice DM config (see top of thread for howto).

Also renamed the dedicated server shortcut to "VP_DM01". Went to the properties of this shortcut and adjusted the target to:
"C:\Far Cry 2\bin\FC2ServerLauncher.exe" -dedicated "C:\Far Cry 2\VP_DM01.cfg" and save with OK.

Doubleclick the shortcut VP_DM01 and your server will run (if you setup the VP_DM01.cfg correctly).

After this I cloned and adjusted both the ".cfg" file and the shortcut for some more configs.
VP_DM01.cfg => VP_DM01_HC.cfg : added hardcore mode to config and added [HC] to the servername.
Renamed shortcut VP_DM01 => VP_DM01_HC and changed the target in the properties to:
"C:\Far Cry 2\bin\FC2ServerLauncher.exe" -dedicated "C:\Far Cry 2\VP_DM01_HC.cfg"

And again for a CTD config, cloned the ".cfg" file and the shortcut as already explained above.
Adjusted the cfg to CTD with some nice maps. Doubleclick shortcut to run your CTD server.

After setting up some initial configs with their shortcuts, I wil now only change the mapcycle every once in a while in the "cfg" file.
For the rest I only doubleclick the appropriate shortcut. Works fine for me, perhaps also for other hosters.

Doderik, you are a gentleman and a scholar. Good job, than you for helping to simplify my server .cfg changes and rotations. bow

Don't need to see the video - we tried it this morning and it works perfectly. We set shuffling at 20s intervals and we have now played several very balanced games. We took the opportunity to add a few standard messages as well.

Yeah, me and thafuriosone like to butt heads now and then...I thought Id fire it up and keep him interested in coming here. Id like to see him back as when I wanted a good CTD game I instantly went to his server. Smile

Anyway, good to hear you are back on track Darius. The new server system will allow me to participate in future MMG events without having to shut down my server as I no longer host In-Game when I play. This weekend I am visiting home again, but after that, Id be free to play some MMG matches again. It sure was a hassle, but now that I have most of the new server worked out, I like it better. It lets me float around more freely instead of being tied to one server.

Kevin, we're glad to be up and running again. It was much easier to get the server started than we first thought. Once we'd located the new server file it was straightforward. Thanx for your help with the auto shuffle.

Pacient, I think that credit should go to the others. We're not much into reading long "how-to" threads, why most of the set up of the new server was done with a bit of guessing and trial-n-error. We couldn't have done the auto shuffle without the help of Kevin though.
