A while ago i played far cry 2 on my computer and everything ran just perfect. Now maybe a week later it suddenly gives such low FPS. From the moment i start the game I have about 3 fps.
My system spec:
intel q8200 quadcore (4x2.33ghz)
nvidia geforce 9800gtx+
4GB ram
620W PSU

My computer should run this game easily and it has done it before so I really have no idea what's going on :S already had the latest drivers installed so that can't be the problem.

Thanks for your help!

Do you have any background processes running while playing the game ? Which OS are you using, and is it 32 or 64 bit ? And what about your Sound Card ?

But First of all, try disabling 2 cores while playing the game.

Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and Click on the Processes tab. Right click the process i.e. farcry2.exe, and Click on Set Affinity and then 'uncheck' any 2 boxes labelled as CPU 0, CPU 1 etc., and click on the OK button.

But first launch the game and then press 'ALT-TAB' to go back to the desktop, and now open the Task Manager and then follow the above method which I wrote. Try this and let me know. Press 'ALT-TAB' to go back to the game.

Just make sure to run the process i.e. farcry2.exe, with ANY of the 2 cores of the CPU. Don't allow it to use 3 cores.
Only 2 of the boxes labelled as CPU 1, CPU 2 etc., should always remain 'checked' while playing the game.

Just asking, what in-game video settings are you using ? You can also 'Defrag' your Hard Drive if you wish, and check for any performance gain.

Well so far when I put all settings on low it runs fine, but I have always been able to play it on ultra high. Only refresh rate is at 60hz because that's the refresh rate of my monitor.

Now when I set the core affinity with all settings on low. I alt tab to my desktop and fc2 minimizes. Then I set the core affinity to 3 and 4 or any other. No differnce yet.
Then I switch all the graphics to ultra and dx10, to change to directx 10 it asks me to restart the game. When I do so the core affinity is lost, is that normal?
Also when I alt tab to my desktop with the settings at ultra it doesnt minimizes, but goes to windowed mode :S and then it suddenly runs with a high fps. But I can't change it to fullscreen ingame so I have to restart again and do it with the GamerProfile.xml manually. Then when I start the game again everything is laggy again.

<edit>
Btw my OS is windows Vista ultimate x64 and I have onboard sound, motherboard is P5Q pro and I use realtek HD audio driver.
I also noticed that even when all settings are low, with directx 10 the game lags just as much as when the settings are ultra high. So I guess the problem must be my directx :S

The CPU core affinity will be lost, when the process farcry2.exe is killed. That's normal. Make sure to run the game with ONLY 2 of the cores (Any of them). And have you updated DirectX 9 ? You can also force the game to use DX9 via the in-game video settings.

Btw, I'm a bit confused here, but have you tried running the game in 'Windows XP compatibility mode' ? Right click on the farcry2.exe icon, select Properties from the menu and then select the Compatibility tab. Check the box saying "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and in the drop down list, choose 'Windows XP'.

Also try this trick. Go to the saved profile location of FAR CRY 2 e.g. My Documents > My Games > Far Cry 2, and edit/open the file called GamerProfile.xml, and change the value of the attribute Platform=" " to d3d9, and see if this makes any difference or not ? Your current value should be d3d10/11 or d3d10a. You can open the GamerProfile.xml file with any text editor. But I'm NOT sure this trick will work or solve your problem, but just give it a try if you can.

*Just try to recall what all things you have installed/uninstalled in the past week.*

EDIT: I didn't read your edited part. OK, for the sound card, you can try to reduce the 'Hardware Acceleration' to Basic.

Windows XP compatibility mode didn't work Frown
profile edit didn't work either
and about the hardware acceleration, in Windows Vista that happens automaticly for some reason :S there is no way it can be turned on or off manually.

Further I have only installed one thing and these were drivers for my pen tablet. Could it be the small Tablet PC input Panel that's sticking at my screen?
I'l try shutting that off.

thnx again!

Yep, that was the problem.

After I disabled the Tablet PC Input Device everything ran perfect.
Now I can play fc2 on ultrahigh with directx 10 just like I've always been able to Wink

So thanks for your help! I really couldn't find something about this problem anywhere on the internet.

thanks again Big Grin

YES, remove the Pen Tab drivers. These can create a lag sometimes.

EDIT: *Oops*. I actually just 'deleted' my previous reply, to repost it again. Now saw this above post of yours.

So glad to know that the problem is solved. Smile
