Thanks guys. I've already made several small corrections to the guide thanks to feedback from users, and once the 1.2 Patch comes out I'll update the guide again Smile

CGFs are the geometry files, if you didn't find out by now. I think the G stands for just that, geometry, and the F is probably file, C probably CryEngine. Thus, CryEngine Geometry File. Don't take my word for it though (though that's definitely the gist of it). Also, I believe (though am not sure) that SelfShadow is the ability of an object to cast a shadow on itself.

Thanks for the guide (actually it was the optimizing Windows that helped the most :P), getting High/Very High out of my Radeon 9700 Pro and 2.26 ghz P4. I am trying for max everything soon!

AWESOME site and great info...I thought I had my system pretty well tweaked, that is until I read YOUR tutorial. I can't wait to get home and start tweaking my system. (gee how nerdy does that sound?...I don't care, I've been looking for something like this for some time now). Also came across your AA vs. AF system tweak...finally this makes some sense. I mean I had the concept down but your tutorial REALLY drove it home. Kudos and thanks!

Great guide...between the farcry and xp tweaks, my system is running the best it ever has, and I can now play the game with everything on high, with an average of about 35-40 fps. Thanks for some great tips!

Have a good day, eh!

Hey guys, I'm glad the guides are helping everyone...that's what I wrote them for Smile

I've currently writing a new WinXP guide which pulls together my two existing XP guides and my system optimization guide into a single reference source for optimizing your entire system. I'm almost finished, so check on the site regularly for its release!

And of course the Far Cry Guide has had small updates/changes thanks to readers, and it will be updated again once the Far Cry 1.2 Patch is released.

Enjoy!

Just wanted to say that I spent the better part of last night tweaking XP. First off I knocked off about 150 MB of memory resident stuff. My boot up load on memory is now down to 115 MB!

I did run all the benchmarks before and after and every one did improve with the tweaking, but at first the numbers seemed like small gains...HOWEVER, once I started playing games it was REALLY obvious something had changed!

I also should add that BlackViper's stuff was a HUGE supplement to your tweak and I think I would have been a bit lost without it.

I did however have a real scare with bootvis. My system would not restart after I started running it, it hung at the xp boot screen. I thought I was SCREWED but got lucky as the last known good config option saved me. Needless to say I DID NOT try bootvis again.

Last but not least I reset my FAR CRY setting based on your Far Cry guide and was FLOORED at how much better it ran. Thanks again, this was a huge help and my PC is running better than ever.

Goog job on the guide. Smile
Nice to see others who are helpful.

CGF... hmmm... the first thing that came to my mind when I saw it was "Computer Generated Foliage", but that's just my guess....

Great guide man, but I slightly disagree on the AA / AF front.

I'm running application preference AA and AF (via the ATi Control Panel) and set it to medium AA in-game and the highest AF setting I could find (also in-game).
BTW - I found that *everything* must be set to application preference or the game will not load. The game will also not load sometimes if you try using the ATi application profiles to set up your AA/AF/Vsync/etc. config.

Performance was barely hit at all in my case.
I'm running the following:
Athlon XP2400+ (t-bred at 266 FSB)
Radeon 9800Pro
512MB Corsair RAM.

I also disagree slightly with regards to the 1GB recomended comment.
The game runs fine on 512MB IME. I've seen it running on a similar spec machine to mine, but with 1GB, and loading times were only improved very very slightly. It takes less that 2 seconds for me to re-load a level that I have been playing Smile

Eureka! Blink CGFs stands for "Computer Generated Flocks"! That's why there's an option to "load LOD models" for them.
Still a guess... but it sounds right to me...

CapitalES - Yes, we are both from the same country. I live in Australia hamvatan Smile

Codmate - not sure what you disagree with about the AA/AF. The game has loaded every time for me without AA/AF set to application preference - and that is literally hunrdreds of times. It might be an issue on your particular machine. And 1GB of RAM is recommended. Literally hundreds of people on various forums (and emails to me) have indicated that the difference between 512MB and 1GB is very noticeable. Perhaps in your case you have a very fast hard drive.

TheAngryLion - I believe you may be right about CGF being computer generated flocks, as someone else already emailed me with the same conclusion. However I might wait until I get a definitive answer from someone who knows for sure Smile
