Screwing with this stuff on many computers, many different configs, running dedis, playing, seeing all kinds of random craziness, I'm now of the strong opinion most of these problems are

PUNKBUSTER-related, and not port-related at all.

(even for non-PB servers)

People, let me tell you something. I was so glad I get the game, so happy don't know how happy I was! Then I was home starting the PlayStation 3 and begin to play Far Cry 2 Singleplayer. Everything was good in the Singleplayer. But then, then the best moment... I wanted to play Far Cry 2 online... I was keeping good, playing 3 Ranks (Now I'm Rank 3 with 628 EXP). And than I wanna play, play, play and still Disconnected... HOW STUPID! How I have to open those Ports? Please reply on my question... Greetz... Dutch_Hero99.

Why did I have to open ports to play this game online? I've never had to do this for ANY other game. This is pretty stupid, thanks UBI for nothing.

Through some trial and erro I found a solution to the problem of connecting to MP games online. I tried to connect and it just cyled through the MP games and finally gave me a fail to connect message. I have a linksys router and I simply disabled the UPNP option. After disabling this option, I was able to connect to the MP games online. Hope this helps all those who have not been able to connect.

Hi all,

after 2weeks i was finaly manage to join to the
online game. I was just change Kasda modem/router with new SpeedTouch Thomson ST 780WL router. Thats it, apsolutely nothin else.
At the end i dont know the real problem, but now its working.
Tehnical support from my network says that all ports are open, in/out, by default on this router.

This will help some1, i hope.

Yeah, when I can't join I reset my router and check my PB. That always solves it.

To open ports on your router, use the guides at www.portforward.com

They do not have a guide for FC2 yet. Use the Guide for FC1 and just use the ports as above instead of the fc1 ports.
You will need to give your computer a a static IP.This is done by going into the networks properties and then right clicking on the TCP properties.
You will need to know your DNS adresses and your gateway adress. You can norm get these of your router home page. For further info, read the guide at portforward.com

There are many reasons people get blocked behind a firewall. In most cases it is programs like nortons that stops the game working. Try turning it off for a few minutes.
Check that windows firewall is allowing the programs through. If in doubt, turn it off for a few minutes while testing. Just remember to turn it back on. There is always a risk when off.

Goodluck

There is some problem with FC2 and running a dedicated server behind a firewall. If i run the server outside my firewall it works. But when i try to run it behind the firewall it wont event start.

I dont think its event possible with the current version to run behond a firewall. And yes i have open all the ports. I can host an ingame server that works. But not an dedicated.

If you get the error talking about Punkbuster not being able to send packets, this is actually port related. I have even more ports than this open. It's just a matter of trial and error. One thing you can do is DMZ your router, start the dedicated server, then un-DMZ your router. This should create port forwarding entries in your router settings.

Your best bet is to add an exception in your firewall settings for both FC2 and FC2 dedicated server executables. There are 2 different executables, so you'll have to do them separately. Another thing you could try, if you have a router w/ firewall, is disable Windows Firewall.

Today we were trying start server with one my friend and he run server from game menu and also dedicated server, but it wasnt possible join it.
Of course he switched off firewall, antivirus and check his modem settings with connection provider, but nothing help... Frown Server always appear on the list, but with 9999 ping.
And as you can see, there were few of same servers so he is not alone who got this issue.
Can someone explain what is wrong ?!
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thx.

ok update full ports list using wireshark plus few extra for fowarding your ports
pbuster a and b 45301,44301 udp tcp
ports i use game ports 9000-9060 tcp/udp
for game

for dedicated server you also need to open large prt list of 50000-65535udp

as the game creates a random udp port per server
deciated server now runs behind firewall other otion is dmz the app but not a good option on spi friewalls like rv082

heres si the list straight off router to remove any doubt
9000-9004ud UDP 9000~9060
9000-9004tc TCP 9000~9060
pbustb TCP 45301~45301
putusta UDP 45301~45301
pbusterta TCP 44301~44301
pbusterua udp 44301~44301
farcry ded UDP 37164~37164
farcryfinal range UDP 50000~65535

PLUS DO NOT ENABLE UPNP ON ROUTER AS YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RUN IN GAMNE OR DEDICATED SERVER!!!!!

dedicated server now works everytime so far
USED WIRESHARK APP TO TRACE PORTS AS IT ENG TO FIND OUT WHY
plus like to thnak sgt carnage as he ehlped in this as we went along to create and test

Can someone who has the dedicated server up and running please post some additional diagnostic information?

I would like to see a screen shot of their router port-forwards, and a netstat command.

I have tried the port config listed above (thanks Andy!) but still not working as expected. Here's what my netstat looks like with the dedicated server running:

And here's the port forwarding screen shot from my router (just look at the last two entries for 192.168.1.7):
