I have a customer who has recently upgraded their computer to Vista and still want to play Myst & Riven. Is there a patch or upgrade for these games to allow them to play on Vista computers?

Being a Mac "person," don't know if this will help, but give it a try...

Welcome to the Forums!

There's an unofficial Myst Masterpiece Edition patch, available here from MYSTerium. Apply the patch using Start > Run, and reboot.

There's the RealMyst (3D update of Myst) version 1.11 patch, available here. Apply the patch using Start > Run, and reboot.

There are three Riven patches:

1. The Riven version 1.02 patch (riven_updater_v1.02.exe) from Ubisoft, is best downloaded from here. This patch fixes the following problems in Riven CD (not DVD) version 1.0:
-- The wrong movie plays at the boiler and in the submarine.
-- Some QuickTime movies play twice.
-- The light near the water at the end of one of the tunnels does not turn on.
-- The rotating domes will not operate properly.
-- Clicking won't work while movies are playing in full-screen mode.

Download riven_updater_v1.02.exe to C:\Program Files\Riven. Apply the patch using Start > Run, and reboot.

2. Jehon the Scribe's RivenGSDPatch (RivenGSDPatch.exe, contained in RivenGSDPatch.zip) changes the folder Riven looks in for its QuickTime files. This allows installing a newer version of QuickTime while running Riven with an older version in another folder. Download RivenGSDPatch.zip, and unzip RivenGSDPatch.exe to C:\Program Files\Riven. Then apply the patch using Start > Run.

See also Jehon the Scribe's Riven (& Myst) QuickTime troubleshooting, (PC versions).

3. davinci79's Riven patch (rivenxppatch-0.2b.exe) attempts to fix Riven sound problems and the crash that sometimes occurs after a Riven movie plays. It copies the following QuickTime version 2.1 files to the Riven Program Files folder:
-- CMGR32.DLL
-- DHIO32.QTC
-- QTIM32.DLL

Unfortunately, davinci79 has left the Forums - the last time he logged in was late in 2006. The link to his patch is no longer active.

The Myst series should run properly under Vista after application of the appropriate patches, with the following caveats:

1. Vista apparently doesn't like many "legacy" (aka older) applications, and Myst and Riven qualify. Some programs run in Vista only if you run them with full Administrator privileges. See How to use User Account Control (UAC) in Windows Vista.

2. Take a look at The Windows Vista Application Compatibility Update.

3. Try running the Program Compatibility Wizard. For details, see How to start the Program Compatibility Wizard in Windows Vista. Or, if you don't want to run the Wizard, you can just try Compatibility Mode, which is invoked as with Win XP.

4. Try what's called out in How to troubleshoot application compatibility issues in Windows Vista.

Note that this is the Myst III: Exile Forum. The Myst and RealMyst - tips, hints, tech help and general discussion Forum is here, and the Riven - tips, hints, tech help, and general discussion Forum is here.
