Some of you have been asking about the copy protection used in Far Cry 2. Here's a summary of how it will work:

- You have 5 activations on each of 3 separate PCs.

- Activations can be concurrent, but you must have the disc in to play the game

- The Steam version includes SecureROM DRM

- Uninstalling the game "refunds" an activation. This process is called "revoke", so as long as you complete proper uninstall you will be able to install the game an unlimited number of times on 3 systems.

- You can upgrade your computer as many time as you want (using our revoke system).

- Ubisoft is committed to the support of our games, and additional activations can be provided.

We'll keep an eye out for any other major questions on this matter and update this sticky accordingly.

Should you wish to voice an opinion on the use of SecureROM or the terms of use as described above and in the EULA, please feel free to post in this thread.

Please be careful to ensure that your post does not contravene the forum terms of use or the local forum rules.

Finally for now, please ensure that you report any problems that you encounter with the copy protection to Ubisoft Technical Support.

Details from the UBI Techincal Support site:

quote:
1. What is activation?

Far Cry 2 uses SecuROM to activate the game at the end of the installation. SecuROM is a Digital Rights Management system that helps protect the game against piracy and illegal copying. Our goal is to make this system as seamless as possible for the gamers. SecuROM uses an Internet connection to confirm your Far Cry 2 license. The communication is a simple request and response to a server used for this purpose. No personal information is collected or stored during this process.

The activation process is completely automated and seamless. If you need help, please use our online activation guideline.

2. What should I do if the activation fails?

If you received an error message while activating your Far Cry 2 game, this page gives you the necessary information to activate your game.

The two most common reasons for the inability to activate are:
"¢ Improper / mistyped input of the game serial
"¢ Internet connectivity issues (rare firewall and proxy configurations) while activating your license.

If the printed serial is hard to read or missing, please contact Ubisoft Customer Support ('Ask a Question' tab above) for instructions.

3. What are the restrictions on my serial number?

Your serial number can be used for installing 'FarCry 2' on three different PCs. As soon as you uninstall, the serial is "revoked" for another installation. This revoke process can grant you an unlimited number of install/uninstalls as long as you follow the correct process.

You can also reinstall 'FarCry 2' without revocation (e.g. you do not have any Internet access at that time), since one serial can be used five times on the same machine.

Please note: during the installation and uninstallation of 'FarCry 2', an active Internet connection is needed.

4. If I install a new piece of hardware (such as a new video card, RAM, hard drive or a new motherboard) into my computer, will I have to reactivate my game?

No, there is no need to reactivate unless you change several pieces of hardware at the same time. Before you change several pieces of hardware at the same time, please make sure the serial is revoked correctly. Following this process, you will be able to upgrade your computer as many times as you want. However, should you encounter a trouble launching the game after installing some pieces of hardware, you can download a revoke application here. In case this process does not work, please contact Ubisoft Customer Support ('Ask a Question' tab above) for instructions.

5. What happens if my computer is lost, stolen, or has a complete crash? How do I get that activation back, since I did not uninstall the game?

In this case, please use the revoke application on one of the computers you activated it on.
This tool can be downloaded here.
Otherwise you can contact Ubisoft Customer Support ('Ask a Question' tab above).

6. I uninstall and re-install my games very often. Does that mean that I won't be able to play after a while?

When you uninstall Far Cry 2, the license is automatically revoked from your computer.

Your serial number can be used for installing Far Cry 2 on three different PCs. As soon as you uninstall the game on a PC, the serial is revoked for another installation. This revoke process enables you to perform an unlimited number of install/uninstall as long as you follow the process.

You can also reinstall Far Cry 2 without revocation (e.g. you do not have any Internet access at that time), since one serial can be used five times on the same machine.

If needed, a standalone revoke application can be downloaded here.

7. Do I need to be online every time I play 'FarCry 2'?

No, you need to be online only for a fresh install. An Internet connection is also required to revoke the license when uninstalling the game. A high speed connection is not required.

8. Do I need to have the disc in the drive every time I play?

Yes. If you own the disc version of 'FarCry 2', the disc needs to be inserted in a local physical drive in order to play the game.

9. How do I revoke an activation if I decide to uninstall 'FarCry 2' from my computer?

Far Cry 2 will be revoked automatically during the uninstallation process.
If needed, a standalone revoke application can be downloaded here.

10. How do I revoke my activation manually?

Revoking the activation is important to reset the full installation rights and allow you to install the game on another computer or sell it. The revocation of the serial will be done automatically during the uninstallation process.
If needed, a standalone revoke application can be downloaded here.

11. What is the difference between 'FarCry 2' on disc (retail version) and the digital download version of the game?

Retail copies also have a disc check at the launch of 'FarCry 2'.

12. I lost my serial. What should I do?

Retail disc version:
The serial is printed on the package of the DVD version. If you lost your DVD package and install the game from the original DVD, please contact Ubisoft Support ("Ask A Question" tab above) to get help.

Online version:
If you purchased an online version of the game, the serial is received by email. Your online platform can resend the serial upon request during a certain time after purchase. Please consult the platform sales support for details.

13. Can I resell my game?

If you purchased the game on DVD you can resell it. Please make sure that you uninstall the game from your computer, and revoke all activations before you sell it.

14. Do you leave my computer clean when I uninstall 'FarCry 2'?

SecuROM is a Digital Rights Management system that helps protect the game against piracy and illegal copying. When installing the game, SecuROM files are installed or updated on your PC. These files are not malicious in any way and are easily removed by an end-user, if desired.

You can fully uninstall any SecuROM component by using the SecuROM uninstaller available here.

15. Does SecuROM send any information to a third party server or collect any of my data?

SecuROM does not send any information to any third party servers nor collect any private data when launching or playing 'FarCry 2'.

16. What about privacy? Will you track down private information about myself?

SecuROM does not send any information to any third party servers nor collect any personal or private data when launching or playing Far Cry 2.

17. Why do you protect your game? It only affects legitimate users?

Protecting games is necessary to secure the development of future Ubisoft games on PC. The activation is a quick process that does not affect the gameplay.

You can fully uninstall any SecuROM component by using the SecuROM uninstaller available here.

18. Where can I go if I have more questions regarding SecuROM?

You can contact Ubisoft Support ("Ask A Question" tab above), or visit the SecuROM support site here.
