On GameSpot.
Some interesting things you may notice: Africa footage, faction logos, footage of the dynamic world! |

Ok, who wants to join my FC2 cheerleading team?
You must look good in a skirt, know some form of pom-pom waving dance routine and bring your own cardboard sign. I already have "A", so we just need "W" "E" "S" "O" "M" "E" to complete the team |

You could be right Kimi, but if any of the cheerleaders have a body like homer simpson the character may be hard to read as they jump up and down.

Dont worry, if you flip your monitor around the cases will eject on the correct side, though it may inhibit your ability to navigate through the game |

So it's safe to say that there will be lions in the game?
If they can make them as lifelike as they did with the zebras. Animals are the hardest things to do in games, I never seen any good animals (doing their own thing) so far. They nailed it with the trees (best trees so far) and graphics, so I have my hopes up high. Dunia good, gameplay/balance good, farcry 2 good. This game is as next-gen as any other. Deserves the polish, I can wait. |

There are only one group of lions the world needs to fear, and they of course are British (And Irish)...

Yeah, but the reload animation would be messed up. |

So what's the point of their having taken pictures of animals they don't intend to use in the game or mentioning it in the title of this thread after there's been much heated debate over why there won't actually be any real presence of some of the more feared African wildlife? Kinda like an awkward tease isn't it? The thread should read "...and Lions,...oh why , oh why not?" For that matter, can someone from Ubi please explain what they mean by "hardcore shooters", you know, the ones they don't intend to make anymore when talking about games like Rainbow Six? After all, this so called FPS/RPG hybrid sounds to be mostly about shootouts with gun runners and drug lords, esp with such a weak wildlife presence. Sounds like a 50 sq kilo parking lot safari with goons for game. |

They were stalked by lions while they were camping, they weren't trying to photograph them for the game.
Geez, it sounds like you really don't like this game, just because it doesn't have predators. It will have a great wildlife presence, there are heaps of African herbivores. Try not to be so negative, there is plenty else to be excited about for this game. |

Well I've detailed my reasons for my comments numerous times and many others have voiced similar opinions. I just think it's a waste of a pretty good job on the graphics of the environmet only to turn it into nothing but a drug and gun faction brawl with animals about as tame as those in a petting zoo compared to what's actually in the wild of Africa. Furthermore it tends to stereotype the people of Africa in ways other games have been criticized of stereotyping certain US citizens. On the one hand terrain wise you have a very realistic setting, on the other GTA meets the savanna. Wish I was as easily pleased as you bongo, I really do, but unfortunately I happen to have a grip on reality and so many games these days are losing that grip. Lots of PC games are becoming like dime a dozen action movies where those making them take us for stupid and think throwing eye candy and cheezy, repetetive, stereotypical action at us is all it takes to provide immersive entertainment for our dollars. If the Ubi crew were in fact approached by lions perhaps it was a fitting wake up call to remind them Africa is not at all like the picture they are painting with this game. THAT is my whole point, and I think a a very good one. What really gets me the most is that part of Ubi's excuse for no predators is they are somehow protecting endangered species. Yet when I hear of stories like Ubi having the poo scared out them by lions or news reports of wild animals malling idiot mt bikers in So Cal choosing to ride remote trails at night near areas where mt lions are known to live right after a major wildfire, I tend to think, no, that's not exploitation of endangered species, that's a reminder of how man pays for their sins. The same could be done in a video game. Not including them as I said before is all BS excuses and even absurd posturing on a psuedo environmental front. Are we supposed to think if lions and such are not shown in pictures, movies and games they are somehow more safe? No, it doesn't work that way, out of sight out of mind is how they become endangered in the first place. |

Where did you get that bit of information from? AFAIK the reason Ubi chose not to include predators in the game is because for them to make the wildlife work with predators running around freely would become to complicated to balance properly. Although I understand your argument that you would like to see a more complete version of Africa including predators, I think you are also disregarding a bit what Far Cry 2 is. My personal opinion is that with a FPS you can only expect so much realism. The fact that there should be quite some wildlife, albeit only herbivores, is already a significant gain compared to other games for example Crysis where they only have the occasional turtle and bird. And having only those few animals alone in Crysis added to the gaming experience to me. Therefore I think Far Cry 2 with a bigger diversity of animals will make the overall experience much better and enjoyable.
Again I ask myself if you are not totally disregarding what an FPS is about. Are you saying that portraying an African setting in an FPS where people fight each other is stereotyping? If that is your point wouldnt all FPS games be stereotyping people with regard to violence? Sounds kind of silly to me. My final question to you is where does reality end in your opinion? I have seen so many people complaining about the lack of reality in a game, but should it really be the goal of a game to be as realistic as possible? If so where does this realism end? For example in FC2 when you rest the time goes fast forward until you wake up. This is not realistic. Do we want the time to go at a normal pace while your character is sleeping? Does that enhance the experience? Do you want the game to force you to let your character eat and use the toilet regularly? Shave his beard, wash himself, clip his nails, brush his teeth, comb his hair, put sun protection on every day, wash and change clothes regularly etc etc etc? Of course I know these examples are silly, but my point is that realism seems to be some kind of ideal to many people, but in reality we don't want full realism at all. Achilles |
