Do you think FC2 will be more or less CPU demanding than Crysis? I'm wondering because I can run Crysis fairly well on medium and I'm wondering if its worth it to upgrade for FC2.

Well, hopefully it's less demanding, seeing as Crysis runs fairly poorly on higher settings. Apparently it still looks good on low-medium settings where the graphics don't drain the framerate nearly as much. But my view is that Cryengine2 isn't very well optimised.

It was evident in beta videos that Crysis had real optimisation issues at that stage. The pre-alpha demonstration for FarCry2 looked waaay better optimised even at that early stage. It's hard to tell the graphical detail level from that video though, but it looked pretty nice and complete to me.

Having said that, I think you will still require an uber rig (like a very good dual core and high 8 series graphics card) to run FC2 on max, just like you need that system to run Crysis on medium-high (eyeroll).

I'm confident in saying that it will be better optimised, but you'll still need an awesome computer to run it on max. The dunia engine sounds like it handles resources very cleverly, which is really what matters in the end, otherwise you can't use all the features of the engine no matter how advanced it is (see Crysis).

Crysis isnt very CPU demanding, most people who suffer problems are limited by their GPU or RAM.

For FC2 a lot will depend on how common a code base they use, or how well optomised each version is for their dedicated platform.

True. Here are some benchmarks from Crysis. The first are CPU and the 2nd are GPU. These I saved from when I first played Crysis prior to my upgrade.

I should add that the game ran great with little to no shuttering plus great looking graphics. (note: with my custom game configs). My upgraded rig plays even better.

Thanks for the replies, I'm planning on getting some new stuff for my computer but do you think I'll need a new video card? I have a ATI Radeon x1950 GT and it can handle Crysis fairly well I'm just not sure if its worth it to get a 8800 or something.

Here's what I'm planning on getting, AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Brisbane 2.7GHz Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Processor Model, mushkin 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2, Western Digital Caviar SE WD5000AAJS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive.

Any suggestions or comments on what I could change is appreciated.

I would wait as long as possible before upgrading. If you can play all the games out there right now, including Crysis, then no need for a new computer until we are closer to FC2 launch. Hardware innovations move quickly and you don't want to be stuck with expensive parts when you could have waited and gotten better or at least cheaper.
FC2 may even run well enough on what you have now.

Crysis was rpetty fun, but WAY too short. Far Cry was a very nice length. I'm hoping Far Cry 2 will be the same.

As far as performance, I'd expect FC2 to run about as well on my machine. Crysis gave me an average of 40fps on with teh aforementioned benchmarking tool.

Runing on:

E6750 3.2ghz
8800gts 512mb
2gb 800mhz DDR2
7200rpm HDD

1440x900 resolution with near all graphics options custom, though all pretty much high-very high.

If i got that, or even a littlw lower, tin FC2, i'd be satisfied.

Oh, that's running XP with Dx10 "exclusive" features forced ON. Blr 4, sunshafts, ttf water, POM.

thats not possible. 8800 GTS is only in 640 and 320mb version. and second of all if you get framerates of 40 with everything on high and very high i start wondering how you fixed that. i have 8800 GTS 640 mb and if i put everything on very high with res of 1600x1200 i get no more then 8 FPS withh AA off. i definately hope far cry 2 will do better then that!

FYI..... The 640 and 320mb versions are the G80 series and the 8800GTS 512MB is the NEW G92 series which beat the Ultra in several catagories. Here are the comparisons (didn't I already explain this somewhere).
Core Clock Speed-Ultra=612 GTS=650
Shader Clock Speed-Ultra=1500 GTS=1625
Texture Fill Rate-Ultra=39.2 GTS=41.6
PCI Express 2.0-Ultra=NO GTS=YES
Video Processor-Ultra=VP1 GTS=VP2

The new 8800GTS 512MB pretty much kicks butt over the 640 & 320MB and its cheaper!! LOL

Today a Finnish gaming site Peliplaneetta.net released an interview with Louis-Pierre Pharand, the producer of FC2, who said that the game will require around the same kind of hardware as Crysis. FC2 will play on single-cores, but you won't get an optimal gaming experience with a single-core processor.

So basically nothing new to me, It really couldn't come with much lower requiments since the visuals seem on par with crysis. The difference is that FC2 comes (hopefully) about a half a year after Crysis, and the people have better hardware. (Partly because Crysis pushed the envelope and made people buy new hardware, as Pharand pointed out in the interview)

8800's are recommended for Crysis, but if i where you guys, i would wait untill it gets released. You'll have more money then and you know what is needed for Far cry 2.

BTW Unure wich 8800GTS is it from this list?

This is the one I got. http://www.evga.com/articles/382.asp

The XFX Alpha Dog and the BFG OC model are factory OCed for you so a little faster than mine stock but I'd rather do my own OCing.

Something else about the 8800GTS 512, I got the Evga one, same one in the link above, these things overclock like mad, for benchmarks I got it to 800/2200, settled at 750/2100 though. Quite impressive, all on stock cooling btw.

@shark522

Do you have custom configs for Crysis? I remember getting better FPS with my old Ultra. What res are you using?
