Let me first say, that I have been a RB6 junkie since I first played the game on my buddies PC in January of 1999. At first I was kind of bored with the planning, and was more used to run and gun Doom type of games. After I got into it, I was blown away by the 1 shot 1 kill type of game. The fact that you could be killed with one shot, had me creeping around corners, had my hands sweating, and I loved every minute of it. I'll never forget coming around a corner, and seeing 2 tangos and killing each one, with one shot each. My bud just started saying...."holy sh*t!"
I loved the game so much, that I have since read the book twice. I'm a console gamer, so the fact that RB6 was coming out for the Sega Dreamcast in 1999 made me buy that console the day it came out. I spent many hours playing RB6 and its sequel Rogue Spear on my trusty Dreamcast, and it became one of my favorite consoles of all time.
Once I heard RB6-3 was coming out for the XBOX, I traded in my PS2. I got the demo on 9/24/2003, and here are my thoughts about it:
Graphics- I'm totally blown away by the graphics. What a difference from the prior RB6 games, though it is 3 years after the console version of Rogue Spear. I pretty much love everything about the graphics, though I do wish more things were interactive, if you shoot a window, it should shatter, same with light bulbs.
Control- The XBOX S controller really reminds me of the Dreamcast controller, so I am completely comfortable with the controller playing FPS games. I felt the controls of this demo were very good. I had no trouble taking down tangos with 1 shot kills to the head, sometimes from far distances.
Gameplay- This is where I have mixed feelings. I really did like having several teams at my disposal in the prior RB6 games, and the fact that if one got killed, you can take over other teams. I also liked the planning. I'm hoping that in the finished product, they have training like thay had in the prior games, and like in Ghost Recon, but if they didn't it really wouldn't hurt the game too much.
RB6 was a revolutionary game, and it spawned many copycats, and oddly enough, RB6-3 copies one of its copycats. With only one team, and the mission failing because of the death of the ONLY guy you can control, RB6-3 is very similar in its approach to SOCOM. RB6 begat (look it up, lol) SOCOM, and SOCOM begat RB6-3. Gone are the one hit kills, but because you only have 1 team, and only control 1 person, the game still has that tense, sweaty feeling I enjoyed in the prior games. Just like my beloved games on the Dreamcast, I found myself playing the demo for hours. I may have sounded a bit negative in my review of the gameplay, but I thoroughly enjoyed the gameplay, and will be playing the demo until I buy the complete game.
Extras- I really think that the night vision and thermal vision are a blast. The thermal vision in the shower area was incredibly helpful. The music, as usual is great, Bill Brown writes the best game music in my opinion. One more thing about the gameplay, I don't have LIVE, so I imagine playing with the headset, and barking out orders to your teamates probably makes the game much better.
Overall- If I had to rate the demo, I'd give it a 9 out of 10, and it's the reason I bought my XBOX.
