......but I've been simming for years now. I used to fly online during the halcyon days of Falcon 3.0. That was a long time ago.
I've flown online on UBI.com one or two times it was OK. I'm looking to possibly join a squadron with the following criteria:
1) Jugs only
2) Full real only
3) Emphasis on TEAMWORK and TEAMPLAY.

Let me know if this is you-

Well, the 56th could meet your call. If you mean flying with the cockpit on view for "Full real" then we are not for you, although we do dabble in this realm occasionally.

With 2 real-life military fighter pilots, and an honorary member who actually flew P-51s and P-47s in WW2 in our Group, rest assured that flying this game with cockpit on (aka toliet tube view) is actually "less real" than what is referred to as flying in the "wonder-woman view".

Should you want to fly with cockpit on, suggest you try one of our excellent sister units - the 310th or BM357.

Are you saying the real pilots prefer the no cockpit view?

Okay, you got my attention...I gotta hear this! Please send your guys in here and explain that. I genuinely want to hear their opinion - not looking to start a flame.

No problem. In hyperlobby page:
=353=MONROEQ (ww2 vet, P-51, P-47)
(56th)`GHOST (F-16)
(56th)`SHVAK (Voodoo, helicopters)

to get their opinions on game cockpit on vs off.

Thats really cool if you have a WW2 vet he's what in his 80's ?

But I strongly disagree with the comment of the wonderwoman view being more real. Wonderwoman opens the whole picture (above and below) how anyone can say that that is realistic is beyond me. Wonderwoman is only for those who want to play arcade style or cannot hack flying in a cockpit. No offence intended.

LOL besides you said it clearly in your exit line. If you want full realism join the military. That sums it up simply your not into realism.

Here's what I've come up with, real pilots are so sick and tired of looking past the canopy frames, they'd say/do anything to avoid the cockpit when they're not flying the real thing http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Its a matter of personal preference. We (military pilots) find the cockpit on view too restrictive - as you cannot move your mouse/thumb/hat buttons as quick as you can move your eyes and neck.

I agree, with the wonder woman view you can get some unrealistic lead angles, but your ability to track a target becomes more realistic since the canopy frame and restrictions from game view controllers interfere less. Instrument gauges become secondary also - since in real life you have G-forces, vibration, engine noise and buffeting to tell you what your plane is doing - ie seat of the pants flying.

As I said, its a matter of personal preference. There are pros and cons to each selection.

And yes, =353=MONROEQ (aka Lt Monroe Q. Williams) flew with the 353FG, 351 FS in WW2. 2 kills. A pleasant man to talk too and despite being in his 80's, his recollection of the war years is rather excellent!

Almost forgot - My exit line refers to the misnomers between full real and full difficulty. There is no such thing as a full real setting in this game; full difficulty would be more correct. Full real exists only in a real combat aircraft.

Don't you think flying in the cockpit, and having it a bit harder than RL is better than using something that's way easier than RL? I find it hard to believe a real pilot would accept the view in no cockpit.

Is getting kills the most important thing when you fly, or are you trying to get immersed in the sim?

The game is already bad enough as graphics are limited. Planes are only so many pixels big at a distance, the view is 2D vice 3D, and viewing a monitor deprives one of peripheral vision.

Suggest you fly in a format that you think is more real and we'll do the same. Cheers.

I was asking about the real pilots. Are you one of them?

Yes - As stated in an earlier post I am an actual military pilot (22 years now).

Consider the following settings for this game when compared to "the real thing"

Cockpit view on:
Offensive - harder
Defensive - easier

No Cockpit view:
Offensive - easier
Defensive - harder

Your choice on how you want to play.

I don't get it... a WWII vet who actually flew these birds in combat states the wonderwoman view is more realistic than cockpit-on and people still argue that cockpit-on is more realistic. Amazing. (Yes, I have talked with Monroe, and there's a lot more than just the cockpit issue that's unrealistic). Using "unrealistic" settings is the only way to get around current technology. Believe me, This is not a slam on Oleg in any shape or form. I love IL2/FB/Aces and know it's by far the best around!!

This is the first time I've ever posted on this issue. Those of you who know me on HL know I'm not one to usually stir things up or get in arguments, etc. I'm a firm believer of flying the settings you're most comfortable with and to each his/her own. I guess I take exception when folks with real experience are questioned or doubted when it comes to what is more realistic.

I think the whole issue regarding cockpit view and why people don't agree with it is the periferal view it allows (Or shall I say does not allow). Without having another two monitors, one to the left, and one to the right to get it closer to what we would actually see if sitting in the cockpit.. we will not achieve the "full-REAL-view".

my two cents

<S!>

The TrackIR, makes up for some of the tunnel vision in "Full Real", once I got past being airsick http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif. Good point EZ.

We at Vultures Row dont pressure you to fly any plane if you dont want. We have a fighter and bomber training program. If you wish to fly full real we have no problem, we fly all kinds of combinations of difficulty. Your welcome to visit our site or you can find out more from a member on HL if you see them or me.

I'll just echo the feeling of other real life pilots about the cockpit off view feeling more realistic. I'm a former military pilot (15 years) and current civilian pilot (over 7,000 hours) flying the MD-88.

Based upon the comments from those with real life experience - I see this dilemna is now resolved. It makes my choice easy. Cockpit off it is!
