After waiting an hour (which is not too bad considering it was from FilePlanet) and waiting for my ignorant computer (which hates installs bigger than 300 MB) to finally stop crashing and open the installer, I installed the game fine. I thought, yay, I heard this game was going to be good so I'm about to try out the demo. Yay yay happy joy joy.
I get into the game. I go into the options to set my video to 800x600 and high settings. It says, "Far Cry must restart for changes to take effect." I waited... and waited... never restarted. Oh well... I thought my computer was just being ignorant so I restarted the computer. Low and behold, it worked fine after restarting. I got my video mode set. And I began to load the game.
It took longer than Battlefield 1942 (well over the 3 minute mark).
Once in the game I started getting insane mouse lag, the voice for the mission objectives just kind of stopped after about 3 seconds and I got maybe 1/4 FPS. The graphics were all broken up and the colors kind of changed back and forth from greenish to bluish.
I THOUGHT i was playing a demo of a game to be released soon. Not a pre-alpha test version :S .
My system specs are as follows if it helps diagnose the problem:
AMD Athalon XP 2500+ Barton Processor
Gigabyte Radeon 9200SE 128 MB DDR Video
Asus A7N8X-X 400 FSB Motherbaord
Cicero 40 GB 7200 RPM HDD
512 MB DDR RAM
As far as I knew, these met the minimum requirements...

I get what you have described when I select high detail. Try dropping it down to low detail and then try?
Also looking at your system specs you may struggle, especially with 512MB Ram and the graphics card :-/
My system is
XP2600+
Asus A7N8X ver2.0
GF4 Ti4200
512MB DDR
It's just playable on low detail in 800 x 600 :-/
Unless you have a 3.0ghz, 1 gb ram and a Radeon 9800Pro it seems unlikely you will be able to select meduim detail, let alone high.

I run Call of Duty at 800x600 high settings so I figured that this game shouldn't be much of a problem.

You cant begin to compare Call of Duty, which is an updated 2+ year old engine with the Far Cry engine.Your graphics card is being asked to do a lot more work.Forget about any high settings.

It has to be your graphics card... your comp specs are greater than mine and I run the game zero problems, on maxed out EVERYTHING!!
my rig is:
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP
Processor: AMD AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1600+ @ 1.40 GHz
Graphics Card: RADEON 9700 PRO
Total Physical Memory: 512 MB
Free Physical Memory: 353.59 MB
Motherboard Manufacturer: ABIT
Motherboard Model: 761-686B(KG7)
As you can see the only thing I have up on you is my graphics card...

I think that most computers hate installers bigger than 300Mb... I have a Ravenshield mappack that is like 300mb zipped... Extracts to even more than that then installed 2.3Gb of RVS maps. It takes FOREVER for that installer to respond tho... Bugs me to death. Especially trying to move that file around.
