Microsoft has released a short list of games that use a mode of communication which the SP2 firewall automatically blocks (i.e. you don't seem to have a choice to turn this on or off per program). LOMAC isn't supposed to be on that list.

I think I'll forego SP2 unless after time MS makes it "mandatory". I held my breath as I installed SP1 and that's enough for me.

That certainly is quite a list.
I was particularly amused to see Word and Works in there!
Good ole MS. They'll weed out those danged older programs if it's the last thing they do!

Quite right Seafury, that IS one hell of a list!
I wonder if MS expects ANY gamers to actually install this thing? Alot of recent games in there... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
Oh ya - so office won't work anymore??? Better line up with $500 to replace it - not.

Yeah, they say "may behave differently," not that they won't work or won't install. And again, many of them may be affected by the firewall, which means that they may simply not play online, or may not automatically download updates as before - until you tweak the firewall to allow the necessary access(or shut it off, as yamangman suggested).
I'm sure there are things that won't work at all, but I'll bet they're few and far between.

I've been on SP2 for a while now (MSDN) and haven't had any problems, but the first thing I did was turn the firewall off (it's a PITA).

Yes, you can configure individual exceptions for the firewall. It works pretty much the same as any other firewall. You can allow any program or port access either by configuring it in the exceptions tab or it'll give a popup window when something tries to connect--then choose to allow or block it.
I've had no issue with any online game, HL or UBI. Nothing to be scared of. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yeah, what's the big deal?
It's easy to add exceptions if the OS doesn't pick them up automatically for you (nice feature).
At worst case just turn off the Firewall, end of story.

No problems with Service Pack 2 here...
Not even on some programs and games mentioned on that list. I did a fresh format, installed Windows XP, installed Service Pack 2, all my drivers, then the programs and games.
Weirdly, one of the games on that list is C&C Generals, which I play practically every day with no problems...
I don't see why you shouldn't upgrade to Service Pack 2 to be honest!

Janes FA/18 works fine on XP as long as you install on a FAT32 partition of your HD. I can't comment on whether it will work with SP2 as I have not loaded it & have no intentions of doing so.

The problems with Windows XP SP2 are far reaching and should not be taken lightly.
Most companies are certainly not taking them lightly. At least be aware of the issues, before pushing ahead with the SP2.

quote:
Consumers will be offered a major upgrade of Windows XP after Microsoft releases Service Pack 2 through Windows Update later this week.
The 272MB enterprise version of SP2 was released earlier this month and a smaller consumer version - weighing in at around 80MB - was due to be released via Windows Update yesterday (16 August), the BBC reports. This automatic delivery has now been put back until tomorrow (18 August). SP2 was due to debut last year, so a couple of extra days wait will hardly make much difference.
The release, which made its debut as a beta back in March, bundles major security revisions and a new Windows update procedure. Principal additions with Windows XP SP2 include: Windows Security Centre; automatically turning on Windows Firewall; and browsing enhancements to Internet Explorer (providing far more control of ActiveX controls, for example). Less mentioned so far, but arguably more important, is revamped memory protection to prevent buffer overruns, the perennial source of so many security problems.
Consumers should note that some programs will 'stop working' after they install Windows XP Service Pack 2. With SP2, Windows Firewall is enabled by default and will block unsolicited connections to your computer. So users will have to make exceptions in the case on AV software, network games and a variety of other popular packages (including some published by Microsoft). Microsoft has published a list here.
This factor is there by design so it's of greater concern that a number of different applications "behave differently" after users install Win XP SP2. Games, third party firewall products and several popular business programs clash with Win XP SP2. The extensive list includes games like Unreal Tournament, McAfee VirusScan 7, Adobe PageMaker 7, backup programs, Zone Alarm personal firewall and even some flavours of Microsoft's own Office applications. More than 200 applications with compatibility problems with Win XP SP2 are listed.
These glitches are far wider in scope than the occasional problems that surface when users install personal firewalls. And it's not just shrink-wrapped applications that are affected.
eBay has posted a notice saying that some of the features of its eBay Toolbar program will cease to function after users install SP2. Meanwhile XP SP2 users are completely locked out of eBay's Enhanced Picture Services. eBay is working with Microsoft on addressing the problems it has unearthed.
Little wonder then that companies like IBM are holding off from deploying SP2 despite the considerable security improvements it offers. Consumers might well be inclined to follow suit. Those who push ahead with XP SP2 are advised to buckle in for what promises to be a bumpy ride. то
