If one enjoyed MYST/URU are there other similar games that one should consider? Any recomendations would be welcome. Preferably things written for XP, so that it doesn't take weeks of fooling around to get them to run.

Why has no one replied to your request? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif...many many Mysters have played the original Myst and Riven before and after playing Exile...as far as URU ?, no one knows for sure what exactly it was except as a complete flop...end of sentence. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

Try Schizm or Mysterious Journey 2, or Syberia.
Very good games that have a very positive gameplay. And supposedly Beyond Good and Evil is positive also with very little violence -- albeit I felt I was fighting quite a bit when I played...
Flop? Live, sure, didn't go as planned at all. Prime? I loved it personally and an expansion pack soon, sweeeee.. On the other hand, I suppose it would have been a complete flop in my opinion if I went to it wanting to play Myst...

Who was it, many, many months ago, whoi recommended Physicus and Chemicus to me? Not entirely Mystlike, but I really enjoyed Physicus (Chemicus kicked my butt! I still haven't returned to finish it. Someday.....)

If you are very, very, VERY masochistic, try RHEM. I guarantee you will not get through this game without a walkthrough. I have one, and I'm still trying to figure it out...

I really enjoyed Syberia, and it sounds like Syberia 2 will be coming out soon. I'm just worried now that I've experienced the 3d worlds of Uru, 2d games just won't be the same.
Cheers,

Bah, I didn't need a walkthrough http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif. A friend of mine from the Writing Project had me over to his house a few times and we played through it. Was really getting intriguing right up until the very end, where it suddenly became *really* stupid...
I wouldn't suggest playing Schizm unless you have a doctorate in mathematics and lateral thinking either... I got the game from DreamCatcher for free because I advertised it on DPWR when it was released... and I'm glad I didn't pay for it http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif. I'm sort of turned off of buying the sequel because of that.

Try Riddle of the Sphinx or Omega Stone.
I have been playing Omega stone, has the same kind of feel to it as Exile. Except this time you are exploring the ancient ruins of the world. It's good.

I'm guessing he means that since it is very different from Myst he would have felt let down if he had expected it to be like Myst (like I did http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif).

I went to the Adventure Company website (been there before when I played Mystery of the Mummy)
Has anyone played THE CRYSTAL KEY or any of THE ATLANTIS games?

I've played Crystal Key, and I don't ever recommend the game. Some have like it though, but personally I found the puzzles lacking some serious logic. It's almost as though you had to know what needed done before it was done. Unlike the Myst series, where there were clues to follow, or Riddle of the Sphnix, Crystal Key is clueless.

So....exactly how hard is Schizm? Impossibly hard? This isn't the first time I've heard someone say you need an advanced degree in mathematics to play it -- is that close to the truth or just an exaggeration?

princess, think of solving Schizm by solving any of the Myst games without all the clues that were given. You have to guess as some things and hope you're correct. Others, you have to sit and really think about what you're doing. Plus, as MM will tell you, if the disk you have is bad the game really ticks you off. And again, I've read many that have liked Schizm, preferences differ.

Which is why I try to read as many different reviews of a game as I can before I decide to buy it. Almost every review says something different about it. I then try to collate all that info and decide if it is a game for me.

I've played Schizm, it's probably the most Myst-like game I've played (though I haven't played many). You're on an alien world and there is lots of unusual machinery to figure out as well as incredible scenery, though I don't think the graphics are as good as Riven, Exile or Uru.
Re the puzzles - I found some of them quite hard. I wouldn't say you need a degree in higher maths to complete them but several of them are mathematically oriented, requiring you to perform calculations in base-12 number systems, compile logic lookup tables, and perform trigonometry. I found that the puzzles were often fairly gratuitious - unlike the Myst puzzles, which usually exist for a reason related to the story, many of the puzzles were just perverse and were puzzles-for-the-sake-of-puzzles (Why should you have to push 12 different buttons in a particular sequence just to erect a bridge that the inhabitants must use every day? Why would the same race of aliens use three different numerical systems?) In addition, there are some very annoying puzzles which require you to go running around back to earlier stages of the game when you are about 2/3 of the way through. Plus, you control two different characters, but have to move each one independently, so if you both want them to walk together to the same place you have to make the journey twice, once with each character.
If you are buying Schizm I would suggest you get the DVD version. The game was originally written for DVD and apparently the CD version uses highly compressed graphics. I found the graphics difficult to read in a couple of vital points, to the extent that I could not read labels on instruments, and had to resort to a walkthrough. The DVD version graphics are supposed to be much better.
I have just finished The Longest Journey, which a lot of people recommended to me but is very un-MYST-like. There is some nice scenery but a lot of it lacks the otherworldliness of the Myst series. There are also several puzzles near the beginning of the game that are fairly absurd (I thought the game got better in this respect as it went on). The most annoying thing about the game was the need to carry on extremely long conversations with many other characters. For a lot of people this is a big plus for the game but I found it frustrating - some patches of dialogue went on for many minutes at a time and as a consequence gameplay took a long, long time.
I'm playing Starship Titanic at the moment, which is quite fun but also very hard because the logic in it is very twisted. Given that Douglas Adams of "Hitchhikers" fame was one of the creators, this is not surprising.
I also have Crystal Key, Grim Fandango, Obsidian, Syberia and Dark Fall on my shelf awaiting time to play.

The copy of Schizm I bought was on DVD, and that was buggy. I really think the master was bad when the copies were made because even the replacement disk had the same problems.

Oh, the sequel to Schizm has been released. It's called Chameleon: Mysterious Journey II. I haven't played it but the rumours are:
* It's very similar to Schizm in terms of the nature of puzzles, and graphic design.
* It's apparently a little easier than Schizm, but still has some real hair-tearers
* It's not necessary to have played Schizm first because the story is completely different. The only real link is in the production team.

Woo hoo! I finished Syberia. It was fun and VERY beautiful! But kind of short. I think I'll probably get the sequel. These 3rd person adventure games are kind of strange -- it's a different approach than the 1st person format I'm used to. It's so funny, though, because in both Syberia and Black Mirror, I found my character to be wholly unlikeable! Part of the fun of playing the game was making fun of my character http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif Especially in Black Mirror -- what a pushy snob! Of course, he DID own a castle, so what do you expect? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
