A similar thing could be done for the sub itself: fresh paint when leaving for patrol, a different look after some week at sea.

Would be a suprize to see the crew change over time. A beard would be nice. Maybe they could show one of the crew lookin' fine one day and another day all beat up with bumps and bruises from combat or a bad fight from the crew.
