As much as I wanted to, I just can't push around enough money to get the Corsair XMS RAM I wanted and was advised by smart, experienced people to get. As a result, I've been looking around and have found Mushkin RAM at newegg...

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-146-294&depa=1

that I guess is CAS 2.0 RAM or am I reading that wrong?

Ok, let me break it down for you as to where I'm at with this PC build. I've got the 2.8 Prescott on the way as well as an Abit IC7 max motherboard. I still need to buy a case and RAM. I really feel I should get a Gig of RAM. I'm just so tired of the stutters. I've been told that getting RAM under CAS 2.0 will not help me much. My thinking at this point is to get a good case that is well ventilated and either cheaper CAS 2.5 RAM for the moment or maybe something in between like seemingly this Mushkin stuff. It will be a while before I am able to overclock.... ok, I'm lost! any suggestions?

Now with an actual index & more fiber! It is newer & and even more improved! It's Luckyboy's Guide For Complete Users!...

LB, Go to your MOBO manufacturer website and look at the Mobo/ram compatability list.

I bought a stick of 512 Mushkin for a puter I built for my mom and it just wouldnt work. The mobo didnt like it for some reason. I put it in my PC and it worked fine.

Mushkin is generally good stuff, but check for compatability issues at mobo site. They usually have a list.

They make different variations of RAM, from budget to XMS. I am leaving you a link to the Official Corsair Memory Support Forum. Spend some time there looking at the stickies, paying attention to the product identification and the actual timings. I ran 1Gb pc2100 "budget" Corsair in my old box without a single issue for almost 2 years. While it may seem complicated at first, the more you learn and understand, the easier it will be for you to make your own informed choices.

I've tried it, some months back...if it's the same stuff.
I Put two 512MB sticks of Muskin 433mhz Level One Black (however this stuff had copper heat spreaders and was rated at 2-2-2-5 and was more $$) in a MSI board with a 875 chipset. It was good...on par with my 400mhz Corsair, which was in a MSI board with a 865 chipset.(C2PL rated at 2-2-2-5 at 2.5v, I run it at 2.65v).

note: They changed the rating on it , a couple of months later, to 2-3-3-5.

Anyway, in comparison of the two, I could only "really" see a difference in Sandra's memory bandwith benchmarks (a few points difference, only). I actually expected more performance from it (because it was 30-40 bucks a stick more than the Corsair, but they were both running on at 400mhz...not 433mhz/my Corsair RAM crashes before 433mhz).

The Muskin was stable, and overclocked slightly better than the Corsair, but I needed to bump the voltage to 2.65v to get it stable at the tightest timmings.

I only got to play with it for a couple of days.It was fast, stable, and seemed very strong/or more stout than my rig...but the mainboards were not identical.

I say go for it...I looked around a bit, and you found about the best deal out there from a reputable vender. S!

Edit: Actually, I found some less expensive deals, but none with those timmings, at that price, from any venders I've dealt with.

Edit:The link ednew give looks good too.
For the price...either one would be fine.

Remember, in the RAM lies your true speed.

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/sonar.gifIs the cpu OEM or Retail?
http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/sonar.gifWhat Heat Sink/Fan are you planning on?

I still need to buy a case and RAM.
I really feel I should get a Gig of RAM. I'm just so tired of the stutters.

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/sonar.gifEven with a GB of fast RAM, I still experience stutters and freezes (but only on-line).Due to skin downloads, poor connections, etc. I'm sure.

I've been told that getting RAM under CAS 2.0 will not help me much.

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/sonar.gifIt's a noticable difference I think.

My thinking at this point is to get a good case that is well ventilated and either cheaper CAS 2.5 RAM for the moment or maybe something in between like seemingly this Mushkin stuff.

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/sonar.gifThat Muskin may be fine. You can lock the AGP/PCI bus, put a divider on the RAM, and kick the front side bus through the roof...provided that your cpu is properly cooled.

It will be a while before I am able to overclock....

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/sonar.gifAll you need to start overclock is...
killer motherboard...............check
Killer cpu..........................check
Good/Killer RAM..................check
two or three case fans...........
*heatsink/fan.......................
**case/power supply..............

*if heastsink/fan is stock, keep that in mind if, and when you bump the Vcore.
Some stock cooling does a great job.

**A cheap 50-75 dollar case with a cheap power supply will over clock fine....up to a point...voltage fluctuation, to one, or more of the rails, can cause problems. The power supply is really a **** shoot. I buy cheap ATX mid-tower cases, from the local computer hardware store myself. If I didn't have that place, I'd be buying them on-line ...like everything else.
S/H on a case, will eat you alive.

ok, I'm lost! any suggestions?

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/sonar.gifCase w/Power Supply or are you gonna buy a seperate powersupply?
Need to consider air flow, how many, and what size fans it'll accept without modding...and if the case ships with any fans?

If you shop on line, you can get a decent Full tower for approx.100.00
or a mid for 50-75...both have a cheap 420watt p/s, and includes S/H.

This is fun Lucky...If you want me to stop, just say so.S!

STOP!!!!
If you wait, and save up a few more bucks...how much of a wait are you looking at...days...weeks...months...never...?

If you settle...you'll regret it.

Get the RAM you want... and skimp on a plain/no frills ATX mid-tower case, w/400-450watt ps, toss in 12-15 bucks worth of fans that will fit it...upgrade the ps later, if needed.

They start at 38.00 includes Shipping & Handling
inexpensive case (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-145-039&depa=1)
There are many to choose from.

I've got a 400 watt Antec power supply, so I'm just looking for a case only. I want it to be big, black, well ventilated and beyond that, I'm really not interested in a whole lot of other bells and whistles. A local computer store has a solid case for $60.00 that seems close to what I want. It has 10 bays 5/5 and cooling inlet in the lower front in front of where the hard drives would slide in and two tiny, like 80 mm fans in the rear and one tiny fan on the side. The design does not make it easy or even practical for the installation of bigger fans. I know I could buy higher capacity fans of the same size, but they'd be noisy. I was hoping to find something out there with two, 120 mm fan mounts, but I guess I'm hoping for too much. I'm kinda big on case cooling. I think I should have more ventilating capacity; am I wrong on that one?

I've also found some fairly low latency Kingston RAM. At Monarch they want like $303.00 with tax, so if I wait until the tax holiday in a few days I can get it for $279.00 U.S. The part number is KHX3500KA2/1G Anyone have any experience or heard anything about this RAM?

I'm going to stay away from overclocking until I can afford some good CPU cooling that is not too noisy. The wife simply will not put up with a PC that sounds like a leaf blower.

The way I look at it now is I've got the motherboard that will take me the farthest in the chipset I've chosen. For now, I'd suspect it will run fast enough to keep me happy without overclocking long enough for me to recover my financial means to take it to the next step.

Hey LB,
I looked at the sight and found some Corsair TWINX1024-3200XL for 317.00.

It's rated at 2-2-2-5

here (http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=M&Product_Code=140252&Category_Code=Unbuffered_Corsair)

How much would that be with the tax thingy?

After reading your case post, I went to ebay to look around. Found a InWin server tower...bids were up to 9 bucks (prolly not worth messing with, it'd need some modding, unlike the 500Q).

It put me in action. I have a InWin Q500A myself. Been meaning to gut my gaming rig, and move into that old server tower....done.

Inlets are a 90mm on bottom, with a 60mm right above it. And two 60mm's exhausting out the rear above the P/S.

It's cool as a cucumber, now.S

Edit:I have the Q500A http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Try this case:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-129-122&depa=1

Yes it has a power supply that you don't need, but you can sell that. It comes with 1 120mm fan, has room for another, and has a ton of room for ventalation. I added an 80mm blowhole on top and a 120mm side fan. If the prescotts run as hot as I've heard you will need all the extra cooling you can get.
