I bought LOMAC not too long ago. Haven't touched it much until recently. Other than Longbow 2 this is my first non-arcade sim -- previous to LOMAC I've only done small amounts of Falcon 4 and lots of ATF/USNF, so do realize I'm a newb.

Anyway, I'm just getting into the A-10, the first aircraft I'm attempting to master. So far I love it! But I had some questions on the Maverick and A-10 targetting in general.

First, how is it that a target box appears over vehicles and the HUD seems to be able to track it (with the XX marks) even when I'm not pointed at it? I never designated any targets or hit any buttons other than to select air-to-ground mode on the HUD yet the sim is automatically selecting targets for me. Is this realistic? I know the A-10 has no sensors other than the Mav seeker head, so...

Second, the K version of the Maverick: When I point the target circle over a piece of ground and hit TAB to lock on, it then auto-locks the closest ground vehicle. If the vehicle is moving, it seems to track and follow it. For an optical sensor is this correct? I'd think it would just point at that piece of the ground whether or not the target was moving. But I also don't know much about the AGM-65. Wondering if this is realistic or not.

Third, I'm having a problem slewing the Maverick target designator box around. The controls that manipulate the BVR designators on the fighters seem to have SOME functionality in moving the box around the HUD but I'll be damned if they work like I think they should! Currently I have to point the nose of the aircraft in a way that the box 'falls' onto my desired point of impact.

And finally, when I lock onto a piece of ground without any actual targets around, I can't seem to get the Maverick to hit it. It just flies up and away into oblivion, then eventually falls back to earth (seemingly miles from where I locked on). Is there a minimum arming distance that I need to heed? Or I cannot lock onto anything except legitimate targets, such as vehicles and ships?

Any help would be appreciated.

(I would have referenced the training missions for some of this info but they appear not to work; also the manual and readme.txt files did not contain any information on my questions. Everything else I've picked up has been from the manual and reference card.)

Check out this HOG Basics Article at SimHQ.com (http://simhq.com/_air/air_092a.html). It will explain about HOGS in Real Combat Tactics, Formation, and lot's of other stuff.

First:
There is a FAC 'Forward Air Controller' who is designating the target and sending the info to you HUD. That's how. Yes, it's realistic, there really are Forward Air Controllers in combat.

Second:
It looks at differences in the image to identify the target, this is also realistic.

Third:
I have this mapped to my X45 Throttle button to slew it around. If you hold the keys on the keyboard, they move too fast. If using the keyboard, try pressing and releasing quickly (tapping) to move the cursor over your target. You will need to fly your plane over it somewhat, but after you get used to it, it's ok.

Finally:
Don't know what your doing wrong. You put the cursor/designator over what you want to destroy, press tab to lock on, fire your weapon, and that's it. Works every time for me.

Training Missions don't work after applying the 1.01 patch. They are't great anyhow.

No printed manual.

There is a .pdf manual in your LockOn/Docs folder. It's not much help either, IMHO.

Keep posting these questions. That's how you learn this sim. Also, Search the forum, most questions have been already answered.

Good Luck! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Locking ontot he ground actually produces no lock for the maverick - you're effectively dumb-firing it. as I understand it, so it just flies on trying to hit the ground, which looks the same everywhere (for the missile)
