I don't know if this is a tribute to UBISoft's talents or an indication of the severity of my acrophobia, but a couple instances in URU were really tense for me. Any other acrophobes with similar experiences? If you share, remember the spoiler rules.

I've shared the same feelings. There were a few spots that had me reeling - I still don't like straying near the edges of Relto. There was one section in particular where some careful walking was required - in RL I would have left it at that, linked back to Relto and forgotten about it. *shudder*

I'm acrophobic, but for me the outside Gahreesen was among the most enjoyable areas.
Except for the really messed-up physics there.

Although I'd avoid ledges in real life, in Uru, I tend to find the highest spot in areas to stand on. I also like to look over ledges, especially if there's something below (like Gahreesen).

Every time I accidentally fall off a cliff or something, my stomach tightens. If I had to do those jumps in RL....forget it. Even the walkways, like in Kadish or Garrison, I'd be crawling on my belly.

I have very mild acrophobia, but I also have a phobia of gun todding thugs, bombs, and boiling lava but I still play game that involves those things. Though they do occasionally give me an adrenaline rush. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Weak behind the knees just thinking about the pathway to the vault.....*wobble, wobble*!

Mine is the jump to and the walk along the pipe. I hold my breath every time.

It's funny for me. Heights don't bother me in real life, but I'd get very, very tense when I encountered them in the game. I agree with you, bkehle & Huela, both of those paths nearly sent me over the edge, so to speak.

You don't suppose my writing the "Age of Acrophobia" will help, do you? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Two places for me. The walk along the pipe and the double jump on Gahreesen. I had to force myself to jump. The leap of faith is interesting too.
I do find myself going to Gahreesen just to stand by the rail and look at the sight. It really is spectacular, unlike anything I have ever seen.
It is interesting that this discussion has come about. It would seem that Cyan/Ubi did a bit of a good job in the height and scale of things in this game.

Climbing the really high ladder from the pillars. If that was real life, I'd be chickening out.

There is one bit in Kadish where you can test out your fear of heights by jumping off into the unknown.

You know, I'm glad this thread is here. I'm doing my senior thesis in Computer Science about using games to treat phobias. So, if you have a diagnosed phobia (or phobias) and have used a game to help treat it OR if you've noticed your phobia has changed whether part of treatment or not and you don't mind sharing with your story with me then please contact me. me@chwith.com

As has been mentioned elsewhere, it is odd that there are so many barricades and cones placed to protect our "safety", and yet much game play requires that we perform death-defying leaps into the unknown, or provides places where a simple misstep leads to disaster.
Ironic?

hogarth1: You can panic-link when you start to fall into a pit filled with lava and survive. You can't panic-link when 2 tons of rock falls on your head without warning. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif There are different degrees of "safety" and in D'ni right now, falling a long ways is safe, but exploring unsecured areas of the City is not.

Heights bother me in real life. I can usually do things anyway, but the pipe walk was particularly bad. And going up the way before it, the stair in air, so to speak? I was all gulpy. And it's just a game, grr. I couldn't do this if it were real!
OTOH, I can stand at a balcony in-game and look over---the railing tend to be sturdy-looking, perhaps, and thus reassuring? I dunno. Uru's effect has been stronger than I remember from the previous games---a result of the immersive graphics, perhaps?
Hogarth1, it does seem ironic when looked at that way. Of course we all know there are two different purposes behind them: I like the panic link better than those old games that used to flash the screen of "You have died. Restore Restart Quit ?"
The barriers also serve to make us curious about the spaces beyond, though it's really frustrating to find you can jump over some of them but not others. Have to try them all just in case!

I don't have Acrophobia but I do have a fear of having little around me to brace myself (AKA falling off...) and the fear of having nothing around me (no floor, ceiling, walls, etc) and falling off from Relto and the falling from the Pillar chamber realllly got to me, though it was fun to watch (fear is fun...) it was hard to
Don't know if these phobias have names, so I'll call them Alynnnphobia1 and Alynnnphobia6
Edit: Btw you don't HAVE to do the pipe walk in Kadish (I'm assuming this is what you're talking about, only Pipe walk I did). You can just jump from the higher ledge to the lower one.

I'm always falling into some kinda pit in my nightmares, but whatever happens in my nightmares never effects my enjoyment of a game.

The long climb in Kadish makes me sick to my stomach, and that walk to the vault....
I never walked the pipe, though. I jumped from the doorway. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif I am the queen of jumps. *yeah right*

I suffer from what i would call moderate to "I hate any building over 10 stories" acrophobia and Kadish had me in knots several times Gahreesen not quite so much. and i think a few of the people who posted here are assuming that this is to "complain" about the feeling associated with certain parts of the game, when i simply took it as a testiment to the "realism" of the game. If a game i am playing can make me feel like that then congrats to the programers they earned it!

I wasn't complaining, either, just commenting. It's amazing to me that a game can look so real it makes me nervous about falling. I'm still sitting in my chair, after all.
