Hopper with sight glass?

Outside the big dome there something that looks like a hopper to me. It has a sight glass and sounds like its full of steam. There a lever on the right side handrail and a hatch at my feet with 5 buttons and a handle. I don't have a clue as to what I should do with this thing. Could someone please point me in the right direction?

I have: Open 3 domes red, orange, green
Been darted and recieved 2 sets of book.
Gone from the lab to the big dome via the foot bridge.

I haven't seen the marble puzzle.

Not sure about prison island. Is that where I woke up after being darted.

I am now reduced to running in circles, pulling my hair out, and screaming obscenities.

A nug in the right direction or a bullet between the eyes. They both will work for me.

The object you described is a telescope. It looks into the "star fissure." You don't need it until the very end of the game, but you'll collect information about it along the way. You'll need to use it to contact Atrus after you have completed the 2 tasks you came to Riven for (i.e., trapping Gehn in the prison book and freeing Catherine from the Prison Island). The place you went when you were "darted" wasn't Prison Island, it was another place where the Moiety (rebels of Riven) live in secret.
