New Skins for the upcoming AI and Flyables [Archive]

Hi All you excellent skinners out there. Thanks very much for all your work that you have done and posted on your websites and on IL2 Skins.

From what I can gather we will see the B17 AI and P51 will be flyable in the upcoming free add on for IL2 FB.

I think it would be great if we could begin to see more skins from the USA 15th Airforce that was HQ'd out of Bari Italy and flew missions into Rumania and Hungary during the war. Commander Maj. Gen NF Twinning USAAF.

15th AF (As of October 1944)

305th Fighter Wing (P38's)
Won't see these fighters in IL2 FB real soon but would be a nice add-on. Comprised of the 1st, 14th, 82nd Fighter groups.

306th Fighter Wing (P51's)
Comprised of the 31st, 52nd, 325th, 332nd Fighter Groups

5th Bomb Wing (B17's - the only 17's flying missions into Rumania and Hungary?)
2nd, 97th, 99, 301st, 463rd, 483rd Bomb Groups.

47th Bomb Wing (B24's)
98th, 376th, 449th, 450th BG

49th Bomg Wing (B-24's)
451st, 461st, 484th BG

55th Bomb Wing (B-24)
460th, 464th, 465th, 485th BG

304th Bomb Wing (B-24)
454th, 455th, 456th, 459th BG

Leadspitter, Jammer and Gielle have done some 15th AF skins based on the P51D. It would nice to see others as the maps are available to make some nice campaigns or missions covering this area assuming the P51 will be flyable by the U.S and we get the B17.

Hello Guy's,

I agree with DH totally. If the void was provided before the actual aircraft model was release we could have some skin's completed. Well eccept for adjustment's that would need to be done. I would definately do a skin of a B-17 that is still flying today. A B-17G-40 from the 447th Bomb Group,3rd Air Division,8th Air Force,USAAF,Early 1945. I would only need a bare aluminum layered template. So it depend's on wether or not we can get the void and somebody would create a bare aluminum layered template to use. =S=

Hello Dragon,

I'm sure you'll see many different skin's from many different bomb group's. I was just saying that I would definately create some skin's for the B-17. I just need a layered template. And the aircraft. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif With the talk about Normandy in the last dev. update anything's possible. The patch is scheduled for release on Monday July 30th. I'm guessing we won't be getting any new aircraft,guess a patch to fix bug's that were reported. By maybe we'll get a suprise. Be as historically accurate as you want,I love it too. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif =S=

P.S. Anybody know what's going on with B-25J Mitchell? I want to see that buff in FB real bad!!

If I get my hands on a layered B17 you will be the first to receive it.

Also. I have this old book about about fighter pilots from world war 2. had it since I was in highschool some 20 odd years ago. In it there is a black and white picture of 4 P51's flying line abreast each being flown by the respective fighter group commanders of the 306th Fighter Wing 15th AF
What was neet was how each one was marked differently

31st FG - Red Striped Tail

52nd FG - Yelllow Tail

325th FG - Black and Yellow Checkerboard Tail " the checkboard clan"

332nd FG - Red Tail "the tuskegee airman"

Would be nice to fly these painted kites on a mission or campaign in Hungary or Rumania against the Luftwaffe and hungarian airforce. Perhaps even meet up with Erich Hartmann.

I believe there is a few of those fighter group skin's available at http://www.il2skins.com/ if I remember correctly. LeadSpitter has done a wonderful 332nd FG skin with his new template. The Mustang also has a 325th FG skin as a default in FB. I'm pretty sure I saw a 31st FG skin at the link above. Don't recall any 52nd FG skin's though.

I think we'll have the chance to escort B-17's in P-51's and take on the Axis fighter's. It's just a matter of time. Oleg and crew have something special awaiting us. =S=

Hey Squirral: Yes your absolutely correct. IL2 Skins has these fighter group paint schemes for the P51.

52FG Yellow Tail - IL2 Skins yes. Plane P51D
325th FG - The checkerboard Clan. There is a P47 on the site with the black and yellow checkboard tail representing the 325th but no P51D with a checkboard tail as far as I could see.Perhaps Bo_Nidle, leadspitter, Canon, Hammered or one of the other great artists could do one.
332nd FG - IL2 SKins P51D yes.

I can't wait to fly some B17 escort missions in one of these kites into Hungary or Rumania. Should be very cool.

I knew some of those were available. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif You can find two 325th FG skin's as default's in IL-2:FB on both the P-47 and P-51. Or at least I think they are suppose to respresent the 325th FG. I could very well be wrong though. If I had some accurate profile's and or color photo's of a 325th FG Mustang I could create a skin. Using LeadSpitter's awesome template of course. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

P.S. I made a mistake in a previous reply. July 30th would be Wednesday and not Monday. But patch new's stat's it'll be the week of August 4th.

Yes the P51D default paint scheme in IL2 FB has the checkerboard tail of the 325th FG.

i'm doing the regimental files for the 8th Af. as soon as i finnish those and send them off to Oleg i'll start onnthe 15th Af. So far i have the 5th AF, and most of the 8th Af compleated.

Copper that's great. I am mot American but ever since I was young boy I have always been interested in the American Armed forces from the second world War, especially the Army Air Corps and US Navy which I think are truly awesome.

Although someone will no doubt be able to do them better -- and faster -- I've been working on these particular skins, myself. It came from an idea to redo the skins that came on the CD, but with Leadspitter's snazzy aluminum template .. and I noticed that some of the skins are from this particular theater (although the 31st FG skin is attributed to another group ...364th?)

Anyway .. here's my progress thus far:

The Tuskegee skin I had already done (up at il2skins as Duchess Arlene) but have now re-done with Leadspitter's aluminum finish and rivets. [I have tweaked his rivets and panel lines a bit, tho .. they didn't match up on the cowl and top of the fuselage ... and added some moderate weathering].

The 31st and 52nd FG are in the background. Still work to be done on those two ... and I've only begun to tackle the 325th Checkertail. The checks are tough for a newbie like me ... besides, the ingame default is pretty darn sharp.

Anyway ... a question: I had planned on leaving all of them blank (nationality insignia only -- as shown) for use in campaigns. Would you rather see them that way, or with historic letter markings on the fuselage and tail? I figure there are others (BoNiddle for example) who are doing specific repros of aces' rides.

You know where you can find skin fotos? Do what I do! For my model planes I go on the NET, find the right plane, search for any avail. fotos. They can even sometimes be http://www.airliners.net/search/photo.search?datesearch=1981&distinct_entry=true

First of all. Let me say Great screenshot and P51 skins of the various 15AF fighter groups. Looking forward to seeing the checkerboard P51 when its done.

To answer your question, I would say leave them blank. I am hoping BoNidle and others will do skins for specfic pilots. If you wanted to do pilot specific skins that would be great too.

WOW! awesome the 306th Fighter wing 15th AF P51's all flying in formation very similar to the black white photo from the war but on a reverse angle. Great Job!

I am very much looking to download this skin pack when it is available. Good choice in using leadspitter's chrome skinned P51 as a base. The checkerboard looks good.

To be honest I'm undecided wether or not I like the template.Please do not misunderstand me,I admire the skill and effort put into that template enormously and Lead'has captured the effect very nicely.It just seems a little too much like a modern Airshow Warbird rather than a WW2 era a/c.However to be fair I haven't tried it myself yet so I'll do one and give a properly evidenced response then.

Lots of great aces' skins for the 305th Fighter Wing have been going up at il2skins.com ... oldgit has posted some dandy Checkertails, for example ... but I went ahead and finished these anyway. I think there's still a market for unmarked ones for campaigns & such. Hope you like them.
