Regretfully, I agree. The old Jade felt more human, While this new one just looks like an incredibly green Stalone. I liked the more tomboyish, sweet, believable look. The commando outfit and cold, dead look in the eyes just doesn't go with how I understood the character should be. I guess it's a matter of press and publicity with this one. Probably wanted to give the main character a look that would convince the average gamer that this is not some "girlish platformer game" but an action game. The result is the "new and improved" Jade, and that is just too bad. I really wish they would go with the old one.

Just select "Game Not Listed." I already sent them a message, and they were quick to respond. Tech support forwarded my suggestion onto the designers. They were super fast to reply, and very friendly.

Do it! Everyone here, email them and ask them to restore Jade to her original glory! We are the market. If enough of us ask for it, we might get what we want.

Personally, I too prefer the old look. One think that made me look out for this game was its charm and the new character just lacks that.

I agree.. I was so excited for this game, now I'm upset.

I don't mind that they wanted to change her outfit to reflect her job.. but the bandana? And her face has changed.. she looks so angry now, it's just not the same.

I really wish they would find a compromise, maybe lose the bandana and give her back her old face..

Well, in a way it is a good thing that we're all getting a uniform response.

I emailed twice. The first time, the tech. rep. responded to me personally. The second time, I got a standardized response. This seems to hint at this:

1) There have been enough complaints about the new Jade design, between my first email and my second, to warrant the company to issue a standardized response.

2) The wording of the response gives me some hope that our suggestions will really be considered for implementation.

Number 1 gives me the most encouragement, though. I hope we can get more people to send in constructive criticism, so that we can have our old Jade back.

I wonder, will the company let us know what they decide somehow, or will we just have to wait for the game and see? Does anyone know, how responsive has Ubi been to gamer suggestions in the past?

There's really no way of knowing. If Ubi decided Jade's new look will be one of the main reasons this game would sell, we may never see her old self again. On the other hand, if there are enough responses, or if the decision itself is not that solid, we may get our way. Either way, I'm sure we will know before the game is released. Someone is bound to put out an official stance on the subject.

well, of course i agree, the new design doesnt have the personality and charm of the old one. what female videogame character has looked like old jade? i dunno, but i've definetely seen a fair share of female heroines that look like the new jade. i sent in a very polite email that was all constructive criticism. lets keep it going

Select "Game Not Listed" and "Suggestion" for the categories, and tell them why you prefer the old Jade. We're hoping that if enough people protest, they'll give her back to us the way we like her.

I saw some screenshots from the games recent showing in Germany. G.I. Jade was in them all. I'm very disappointed to see that there hasn't been any change made at all. And I'm still irritated by Pey'j as well. That's just a tasteless design, pure and simple. If they carry on with their plans, I'll probably spend most of the game trying to find ways to kill Pey'j off, just so I don't have to look at him. It probably won't be possible, but maybe someone will make a Kill Pey'j GameShark code or something . . . I really, really want the old designs back.

GameSpy: Why did you change Jade's appearance after E3?
Michel Ancel: I did it by myself. The other people on the team said, "What have you done?!" I did it myself over the weekend, crazy story. Because we have a very powerful tool, it's very easy to change models -- all the animations remain intact. I did that because I was showing the game to lots of people and saying, "this is the report, an experienced woman ..." But she looked too short, like she was just out of high school, and not professional enough.

A lot of people thought it [the new design] was a lot more military, and all these things ... And it is. But she's got to infiltrate dangerous places, you've got to believe in that. And everyone who's played the game, they've understood why she's changed. So at first I was a bit afraid, but then people understood there's a better connection to the world [with the new model]. She's a relatively experienced woman, she's done things before the game starts.

It's funny because we had a lot of criticism of this change.
GameSpy: I didn't like it at first, but I think I'm warming up to it more, especially after playing some more of the game tonight.

Michel Ancel: Yeah. I think you have to look at it when she's moving through the story and all these things. Forget about the previous one. The story has not changed. She's still with the old pig. She's not just with another teenager like her, you know, or a male the same age. And they don't talk to old people. She's still open-minded, the same person. Everyone who plays the will realize the story's the same and her appearance is superficial. So yes, this is the first answer I will make.

The second one is that, when I see what happened to ICO for example, I thought that there is a real risk in having too much of a disconnection between what you want to express and the way you express it. If people don't get or don't understand the thing, then they don't truly enter into the game. I wanted to avoid having a lot of people reject the game just for the visuals. A lot of guys don't want to play a teen girl that looks like they're of high school. They'll think this girl can't be the heroine, and reject the game out of hand.

We did that at the end of the development schedule.

Hello to all. I'm a bit late finding this site but I too have been anticipating a NEW character on the video game horizon. I agree with the majority here that the original Jade possessed a fresh look that said youth, exoticism, and a yet unspoiled aura about her. I wonder where Ancel's French sensibilities (think young Leslie Caron from Polynesia) were when he decided to make a change. The new Jade displays an edge that seems more appropriate in representing a character that has become more cynical and experienced. I hope Mr. Ancel takes to heart the views represented here by quite a majority of future BG&E gamers. He would be wise to check the views of Tomb Raider fans and how the word spread like wildfire about Eidos' newest and now last TR game. I don't want to sound like some bottom line Hollywood producer that forces a director with vision to change an ending, character, or feel of his or her film, but I do wish Mr. Ancel reconsider and realize what he had with the original Jade: a look that captured the innocence and determination of youth. A look of exotic beauty that so defies the typcial western female look, a beauty that matches the very beauty that purportedly has come under attack from outside forces. That very contrast of Jade's face and clothing against dark forces is what caught all of our attention. I found Mr. Ancel's assessment of ICO's characters (found elsewhere in the forum) and their connection with gamers incorrect; while the boy and princess possessed limited vocal communication skills, it was their very look that helped spell out their characters: outsiders, vulnerable, loyal, and righteousness.

Perhaps it is too late to retract the changes, and if so, Mr. Ancel, you unwittingly let go of a fresh vision of this new character we fans are about to embrace, albeit not entirely wholeheartedly.

Hey everyone!!

I'm new to this board and I've only started following Beyond Good and Evil since earlier today, after IGNcube's update on the game.

I was surprised when I wandered over to the Ubi Soft website, to find more info on the game, on just how many people hated the design change of the lead character Jade. I had no idea there was a design change (remember, I've only become interested in this game since today). I tried to remember what the original design looked like, or if I had even seen it before.......then I scrolled down a few posts and saw the picture someone had posted and said, "Ohhhh Yeaaaaa, now I remember seein' that before."

I'll be honest........I really like the new design. That's what drew me into the new media posts set out by IGNcube today.....and I remember a month or so ago when they had media for BG&E and had that picture of the 'old' Jade. I really wasn't drawn in by her old look.....I really don't know why. Don't get me wrong, I like her old look as well, but to me it just didn't do it. Her new look seems more fitting to the games integral story-line, or at least as much of it as I know from reading today.

But just one person out of so many thinking the design change is good isn't that valid I suppose. I just figured I'd post my thoughts. This post was started a couple months ago it looks like......and it looks like the new design is staying with only a month or so till the release date and new media being displayed with the new look.

I was wondering what the deal was with this thread that hadn't been postin in for nearly a year suddenly coming back...

Anyway, check out the Wallpaper Competition thread. A few pictures in there feature the old design, including goonie08's sig picture. There are other threads as well that have old pictures in them, I'm sure you could find them if you look.

As for myself, I prefer the current, "new" look.
