Advent Rising


many of you know me as a huge HUGE HUGE Halo fan, as well as being a big fan of both Doom and Half-Life, and i know that everyone is thinking that these three games are going to be the big cheeses of 2004

well, i've been following this game since it was announced at E3 last year and it looks TRULY amazing, i mean REALLY good,

i did a thread on it last year when it came out, but it was largely unnoticed, so please, people, if you get the chance go here:

watch the trailers there (and the ones at Gamespot) and you'll be blown away

ive seen the trailers and IMO im not impressed by it. Theres so many games that look similar to this i dont know why would this be GOTY material. I like that matrix style thing but theres nothing to it that stands out from other games. Thats just me.

look at it this way:

near the start of the game you have to make a choice:

save your fiancee,

or save your brother.

one dies, the other lives, and which ever one you choose has an impact on what happens in the story

no other game has ever had as much openended gameplay as this will

when the second and third games come out, you'll be able to load the character you made Gideon into at the end of the first one into the other two

and it will have a killer storyline

those of you who have read Ender's Game and subsequent Orson Scott Card novels will know that he writes emotional stuff

they arent even half as open-ended as Advent Rising is going to be

yeah, in Deus Ex you can make your character unique so that no other person who plays it will ever have the same one as you, and the game can be played in SO MANY different ways (just like the sequel)

but every little thing you do reflects on what the outcome is.

i mean, having to choose who dies between your brother or your fiancee is a pretty emotional thing to have to do right at the start of a game, let alone the fact that which one you choose will completely change how you advance through the game

S7N, lol, you might have yourself a little overhyped. Just because you get to make a decision at the beginning of the game doesn't make it the best game of the year.

Also, open endedness doesn't mean anything either. Other games have tried it, and many have failed. It is tough to make a good open ended game.

I heard no MP. Is this true? I probably won't be buying it then. :P

but i dont see that as a downside, this is a game based on the storyline and is all about evoking emotional responses from the player (just like Card does in his books)

okay, maybe i am bein a little overhyped, and it probably wont be the game of the year (hopefully Halo 2 or Half Life 2 will get that mantle) but its still gonna be a damned good ride!
