Hello there.
I'm running an Athlon 2600+ with an ASUS nForce 2 motherboard, 512 DDR400 ram, Radeon 9500, and an Audigy 2 soundcard on windows 98.
For some reason I'm experiencing crackling/popping during gameplay and sometimes during the menus. I'm already running on DirectX 9.0a, Catylyst 3.5, and the latest Audigy 2 WDM drivers (with other the other EAX patches, etc).
Is this problem because of the game itself? Or is it because of my hardware/software setup? RvS is the only game where I get this problem, all my other software and stuff works just fine.

Make sure that the onboard sound is disabled in the BIOS and also make sure that there isnt a conflict in the game menu, like 3DVirualization and EAX enabled at the same time.

I've disabled my onboard sound already, and I've turned the setting to "No Virtualization". But, I still get crackling and popping. Any other solutions?

common problem with a lot of games, if you adjust your volume by using the speaker control dial that comes with some speakers, high pitched sounds cause crackling... go into creative mixer and turn down the master volume. Don't go higher than about 95%. then use your external dial to adjust volume.
If that does nt help, try to plug in your system, in a different room to test sound...line noise can make wierd stuff happen.
is there anything else plugged in near your system?
are your speakers "powered" or just run from card?

Guys, I have this problem too, you should learn to listen to peoples problem descriptions before you say things like, "plug your speakers into a different outlet". This problem SOMETIMES happens, it is totally a software thing. Because sometimes certain sounds disappear along with this bug, like the woman's voice when a round is complete, etc. You restart RVS and sound is fine. It is a very annoying bug and RVS is the ONLY game I have sound/video problems with at all. MOST of the people who post on these forums seriously have nothing wrong with their setup, they are going out to buy new addons, new pc's, etc. when they don't even have to!
Troubleshooting works like this: You test your "problem" like sound, in different situations. Like, play 5 games with the same sound card. If only one game screws up, most likely your system is fine, think about it, it CANT be your ram if other games run great. Also, no problems in windows using sound, I believe most of you get my point. RVS is full of tiny little annoying bugs that will eventually get worked out, most of you need to stop buying uneccesary peripherals for your PC, or even NEW PC's, because most likely the problem is with RVS.
I am not saying those people who have posted their ideas are stupid or ignorant, I am just pointing out something that should be on everyone's mind, ESPECIALLY the developers.

Guess what? It can be more than a software problem. Most people with an Nforce board don't complain so it isn't sytemic across the platform which would indicate a software problem.
Another thing to try that helps with SBlive! cards on Via mb's is to go to the sound tab in dxdiag and move the sound acceration tab down a notch. That can clear up popping in that situation so it may work for you.

Well if you're dumb enough to go out and buy a new computer to run a $40-$50 game then thats your own fault.

I got the popping and the clicking too. I think its a common problem for most NForce 2 people...I haven't found a solution yet to the problem...
Alot of it has to do with the Dare sound implementation in RvS. Most other games have no problems but anything with Dare does and little else.
