View Full Version : The reason everybody runs when in the Cavern

The grandeur of the Cavern is astonishing, it's true;
The scenery takes your breath at every turn.
One thinks 'twould be apparent that the proper thing to do
Is to stroll about at leisure, but we learn --

That the normal mode of transport is to run for all you're worth;
With leaps and bounds descend the Staircase Grand.
To flit about in frenzy in this wonder of the Earth;
I must admit I didn't understand.

Until the thought occurred to me, this crowd must be engaged
In a desparate search for something out of sight.
Great Zero markers? Surely not! They almost seemed enraged
As they tore around the Cavern every night.

"Of course, that's it!" I cried at last, returning from a break,
During which I'd paid a visit to the loo.
What else could cause the frenzy but the innocent mistake
Of forgetting D'ni must have toilets, too!

D'ni with no 'dunny!' Oh, it's tragic, but we trust
That nature's call will never heeded be...
For in the lake, for algae's sake, we never, ever must,
Under any circumstances, pee.

LOL - Very good, I liked it. Never did read anything in the journals about their 'habits' either.

But I don't understand why (with the lake such a wonderful colour as it is) they don't all just pee in there anyway.

Good poem, Mowog!

I wonder, could the dunny be behind the locked door at the building betwee n the ferry terminal and the docks? It looks like a good place for it, direct access to the lake water. One has to remember that some algae like their water enriched with nutrients!

Great poem Mowog! A very enjoyable read! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

The noteworthy absence of what would seem to be an obligatory area of respite for an enclosed habitat has been of keen interest to many I think, including me. All that dripping and running water does influence the desire to give something back. Perhaps there should have been a sign posted by the DRC at the spot where a person first arrives at the desert that reads, "Before continuing, all travelers please visit the surface facility nearest you."

I have oftern wondered at the lack of toilet facilities. And has anyone noticed that there was no living area on Myst Island?
It's the same in books, have you ever noticed that no-one EVER goes to the toilet? (I remember thinking that whilst reading Lord of the Rings, there is a lot of talk of food and drink but not once in the year long journey does anyone releave themselves.)

I'm sure those orcs never brushed their teeth either. Also, many of them could have benefited from the application of a facial moisturiser.

My goodness, that is excellent!

I had noticed the lack of basic living facilities in Myst, and wondered about it (particularly as it was written by two women...[hastily suppresses mental image of Atrus having a wizz off the dock]) It's possible the D'ni metabolism might be more efficient than ours, I suppose...but even then, one might have expected to see a Portaloo or two in the Cavern, courtesy of the DRC. Even if you never went into them...they kind of go with the cones and hardhats.

Ah well, maybe in the next expansion pack. (Um...any word on that yet? Please??!??) http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Zander Nyrond, I'm not sure if the small development team that greated Myst had any women on it, I don't think so. The founders of Cyan (the development company), Rand and Robyn Miller (Robyn isn't there anymore) are guys. I think the development team for Uru may have included a woman or two, but it's still mostly guys creating the games.

Funny thread!

I think Zander was referring to the two women who wrote the Myst Age, Catherina and Anna. (it was Anna, right?) http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

What odd logic the Dni had, if that is the case! Just because no one can hear you, doesn't make it PRIVATE!!! Imagine how disconcerting it would be, with all those people popping in on you from the balcony!

Eep!

Yes, I meant Catherine and Anna. (I really must try to distinguish between reality and this strange fantasy where everyone talks about computer games...) Mind you, the book (BoA) was written by two guys, so I guess that explains it.

We don't know that the D'ni had our taboos about elimination of wastes (assuming they did it at all). Maybe...no, I'm not going there.

I've been wondering about where Atrus and his family lived on Myst... I haven't found a bed to sleep in (although Atrus refers in his note to Catherine that the creepy cellar next to the dock is there "forechamber"). If I was going to write myself a paridise age, I would at least include somehwere to sleep instead of filling it with puzzles and spaceships (and yes I know that the game is an adaptation to make it "playable").

Okay... I have to wonder about the Privy Problem myself... But, why is everyone so interested in finding facilities? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

Been wondering what people would do in the Live aspect. Off playing Hide and Seek in Kemo and suddenly announce one has to pop off to the loo, will be back shortly... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif

Kest, having been trapped in the hood, during a serious shard "lockdown", for an extended period of time, I cannot stress enough the need for proper facilities. Having been given a suggestion of "what" I could "sling" over "where" in order to complete the process (should I have the need) - I may now have an understanding of why the signs say "do not drink the lake water" ... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

I don't want to resurrect an old thread, but I was thinking about this. Maybe the D'ni used the fissure for such things. The DRC, of course, used portable facilities. Being ecologically-based, safety-minded professionals, they took the potties with them when they left.

KamronShepard

Are you talking about the Star Fissure? That was in Riven, not D'ni.

urikrak
10-07-2004, 07:47 PM
But it appeared on Relto and in the Bahro cave. It was also in Myst. I thought it was a running theme and they had access to it.

KamronShepard

Riven was written years after D'ni fell, as was Relto. It wasn't in Myst, really. A Myst Linking Book fell through the fissure in Riven when Atrus linked and dropped it in, and the fissure lead to the Age of Earth, also called the Age of D'ni. Then you found the Myst Linking Book right before the game Myst.

Hmmm...The fissure was written after D'ni fell. OK, never mind.
