View Full Version : Any way to limit onscreen text?

I checked the config file, but I didn't see anything that looked like a setting for the amount of onscreen text. I play multiplayer co-ops almost exclusively and sometimes there is so much AI generated onscreen chatter (text) that it obscures a significant amount of the view. I don't want to do away with it altogether because when there are no humans to fill all the planes they give you crucial info, but limiting it to two or three lines would be a big help.

when you open your chat window you can use the mouse to drag it to any size you want.

[game]
Arcade=0
HighGore=0
mapPadX=0.6742188
mapPadY=-0.0375
viewSet=34
Intro=0
NoSubTitles=1
NoChatter=0
NoHudLog=0
NoLensFlare=1
iconTypes=3
eventlog=eventlog.lst
eventlogkeep=1

AI text is controlled by NoSubTitles, 1=off, 0=on.

AI voice is NoChatter, same settings.

Engine/kill status on the right of the screen is controlled by NoHudLog, same settings.

These settings are in the conf.ini file in your main FB or IL2 folder.

That doesn't control the number of lines the chatter displays. I don't think you can modify that. It's either on or off, AFAIK.

And you'll want it off anyways to grab a couple more frames per second in the game. You can hear what they are saying and if you don't like hearing Russian (but I can't imagine who'd not dig hearing Russain or polka music!) just copy the English files and replace the files in the Russian folder with the English files.

Then it appears there is no way to limit the amount of AI text, only to turn it completely on or off. I fly using Ventrilo voice comms with my squadmates and don't desire the in-game chatter as it gets in the way. Defining the size of the text lines for the chatbox only affects chat text generated by human players. I was hoping for a way to constrain AI onscreen chatter. Thanks for the input, guys.

There's another option (host settable only) for multiplayer games.

In conf.ini find:

[chat]
region=(dx=0.8359375,dy=0.14713542,x=0.0,y=0.0)
adr0=ALL
adr1=MY_ARMY

and add a line:

autoLogDetail=3

You can set it to 0, 1, 2 or 3. See Page 44 in the manual for what the 4 settings do.

You can open the i18n folder and edit the hud_msg_properties. You can change the hud text to any words you want. Just change the words on the right side of the list not the left...Might be possible to completely remove the text from a chosen few to limit the amount that comes up on screen...check the readme file in the main il2fb folder for info..this works in the english language folder not sure about the others...

Thanks Tully. I added the line as per your suggestion, now we'll see if it does what I'm hoping it will do. When I first opened the manual pdf files, I went to "advanced", thinking something of that detail would be there, but actually found it in the "basic" manual. Thanks again, you sure know your stuff.

As a followup, I set the autolog detail to a value of 2. It did not do what I had hoped for as evidenced by 9 lines of AI generated "HUD text". I fly with cockpit detail ON and that many lines of text partially obscured more than a third of the forward view. Perhaps a future option will make it more controllable.

yea i know Exactly what ya mean ZG77_Spectre

all you get is 4 AI wingmen ..... wouldnt 4 lines be adequate ? lol

not having a option to lower the AI chat text is kinda an oversight if you ask me
