I'm just curious how many people who play Uru also have musical talents. Feel free to respond and add any additional commentary if you wish. Thanks!

I'll start with a vote for Piano. I've been getting lessons since August 2003 and am currently working on Bach's Concerto BWV 1056. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Does acoustic guitar (actually, it's a classical guitar, because they were out of acoustics) count as a string instrument?

Yes. If it has strings,(Violin, Guitar, Viola, Cello, etc.) it's a string instrment.

If it's brass,(saxophone, tube, sousaphone, french horn, trombone, etc.) it's a brass.

If it makes it's sound via air flow,(flute, basoon, contrabasoon, oboe, etc.) it's a wind instrument, unless it's brass, and then it's in the above category.

If the sound is made by an impact,(drums, castanets, xylophone, timpani) it's a percussion.

And then there's the piano, which is both percussion and string, and the keyboard which is none of the above.(and no, I do NOT mean a computer keyboard)

You don't have vocal.

I was in the school choir all through grade and high school. I keep in practice by singing at work. Serves to keep me awake, while the sounds of the machines cover the sounds of my voice. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>I don't need helium to to pitch my voice up that high. I often find it amazing just how much helium it takes to change my voice... Doesn't last very long either... *sigh*
I've got a pretty good range and on a good day can do soprano without sounding like a baritone with a head cold. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif I'm actually a tenor, but use my higher range for some twisted fun. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif
In the six years I've been working there, I've only used helium twice. So, http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif.

Do you want to add an option for 'non-musical'? (Which would have been me up to a year or so ago when I discovered I had a singing voice.)
This may help you determine the ratio of 'musical' to 'non-musical' URU players.

You can only have 5 options, unfortunately. So what should I omit?

I play a variety of recorders an whistles, I like to suprise people by playing on a small clayflute, (I call it an type of ocarina) Played the last choral from Bach's Mattheus passion once on it. I also play piano, although it's now a keyboard as I have no space for a piano. And I sing in 2 choirs, the church choir and a small group which comes togetehr once a month to sing/ study the psalms by Goudimel and choralsettings from Bach. One can say I like music very much but I'm not that good at practising boring etudes and such.
BTW Mysti sage, do you already know what BWV stands for? If not I'll tell you now: Bach Werke Verzeichnis. If I'm correct it just means the catalog of works by Bach. (to be honest I'm not sure about the correct spelling of the last word can't find it in the chaos of my rooms.)
To all you, enjoy the music in your life http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Excuse me, but MS, a saxophone is a wind instrument. We require reeds in order for us to make a sound, not put our lips together and make a farting sound like the trumpets, trombones, tubas, baritones, etc, have to do. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

Why omit when you can combine?
Of course some people might be offended if you put wind and brass together, or categorised keyboard as a form of percussion http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
On reflection, maybe you're better off sticking with the list you've got - over to you maestro.

Piano and flute (I voted for piano since it was getting fewer votes)

Oh, and guitar and piano both count as percussion and never as strings because the strings are plucked.

I've been playing the flute for 20-some years. I started in 5th grade, wayyyyyyyyyy back when, and I can play the clarinet and alto sax too. (They all pretty much have the same note fingerings!) http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I've been playing guitar for about 20 years. I also used to play coronet and have been known to annoy the neighbours with my harmonica. My wife is an accomplished pianist and used to play violin too. I used to play in a band and penned a couple of not bad little dittys, my claim to fame being congratulated by some of the guys from teenage fanclub on a good set and we also supported Dodgy, who probably didn't make it stateside.

On the subject of music, hubby and I had this big debate last night and still today I'm scratching my head on this one. He can't seem to grasp that in one day I can go from listening to someone who sings in Italian (but don't speak it or understand it) to listening to Led Zepplin, or Mozart or Coldplay or whatever. I tried to explain that my musical likes are in a WIDE range because it's not necessarily lyrics that catch my ear. It's the music itself or the voice of the person singing the song. I may not understand the Italian words but the voice and the music are soothing and relaxing. Enya being another example of that. Love the voice and the music. I guess I just get so annoyed when someone can't understand that or when they say that someone I'm listening to has no musical talent at all simply because it's not their taste. To each his own darnit! I'm not one to say that anyones taste in music sucks simply because I don't like it myself. Different things make different people happy nd I think that's something that should be respected. It's part of what makes us who we are. Music can have a major impact one someone and the way they feel. Whether it makes you sad or happy or otherwise, if it makes an impact on you in SOME way, then it's worth listening to. So there, I've said my peace and I'll go back to my Bocelli now! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Kadish, the world of tremendous riches, both natural and not, yet scarred with an extravagant death, or not.
The Cleft, a place of never-ending beginnings and unwritten endings.
Gahreesen, a fortress for the proud, a home for disaster.
The Eders, gardens of beauty, but no amount of rain will cleanse them of the crimes commited there.

Well, I voted for piano because I've been playing it the longest--about 14 years now! But I haven't studied or practiced it diligently in the past 6-7 years. It's mostly just for fun now. I played trumpet all through middle/high school, in concert band, marching band, pep band, and jazz ensemble. I've played for a couple of school musicals also. Just recently I have started singing more--I had a semi-lead role in the school musical my senior year, and am currently a baritone in my college's audition choir. I really want to learn to play the cello but I'm afraid I don't have the time right now. I also want to get into composing synthetic music, but unfortunately I also lack the money for the proper equipment; notation freeware is just not cutting it!

So anyway, I'm pretty involved with music. Did I mention I'm a biochemistry major? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

Chucks tomatoes and a few potions at speedy.

And what about the wierd squeaking sound a saxophone makes that reminds me of the sound made when partially pinching the end of a balloon. Or a dying goose...

I've had experience on the trumpet for 7 years, absolutely loved it.

Saxophone being a part of brass? Oh nononononono, little bit of a crowbar between the two thank you. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/34.gif

I had a very odd dream last night - I dreamed of a cowboy walking down the street of an old Western town, whistling an odd tune. When I woke up, I was whistling the tune all morning, but unfortunately the tune has gone completely out of my head. The only title I could come up for the tune was "Constipated Cowboy," because of the way he was walking.

I wish I could remember it, because it was a really catchy tune. (And I can't really whistle very well.)

HAHAHA!! Memories!

We had to wear pants that went up all the way to our chests, and the coats barely hung above the belly-button. I certainly felt taller when I wore those, hehe. We wore red cowboy hats with white feathers.
Did anyone ever have to do practice in the middle of the rain or snow? That was always interesting, especially with the mud puddles. After every football game all the band members would rush off to a restaurant called Denny's to order milkshakes and other desserts.
