The ball is made up of different materials, you have to work out what ratio AND you have to get up and have a closer look at the counter weight! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

In Saav's lab (back on J'nanin) there are a couple of balances that tell you the comparitive weights of the 3 possible substances. There's also something he left there for you to learn about the weight ratio and fulcrum placement for the lever. (side note: actually, you don't even need that -- the math stands on its own, since you don't have the materials to make the ball and counterbalance of equal weight.) But anyway, you're faced with the task of creating a ball that will work with the counterbalance. Find out what the counterbalance is made of (look at it close up from 2 directions -- top and bottom). Then use the info in Saav's lab to figure out what you need to make the counterbalance from. NOTE: You don't have to make a full sphere, just make it weigh enough. Also, keep in mind that the base of the stand is half of the sphere and it is made entirely of wood.

Hope that helps!

Back in Saav's study the two balance examples show a crystal ball balanced by four wood balls and a metal ball balanced by four crystal balls. First example shows that a crystal ball weighs four woods, the second showing a metal ball weighs four crystals. Now the trick is to equate the weight of a metal ball in wood, in this case one crystal weighs four wood, and four crystal balls balance one metal ball so that gives you one metal ball weighs sixteen woods. OK?? 1 crystal = 4 wood; 1 metal = 4 crystal; so 1 metal = 16 wood. Also notice the mobile of the hanging men, two small figures at one end and a large one at the other. So this means you see a ratio of 2 to 1 or 2:1---knowing this is important for the small orange ball you've seen in Amateria.

Back in Amateria: Look at the orange ball, from the control panel(you can zoom in) and from above, use the elevator to reach the upper platform. How many pieces do you see? One crystal, and seven woods? What does the crystal weigh--weight is above, and a wood weighs one. So 7 + X = the weight of the ball(X being the weight of crystal).

Now comes the mobile: Remember two small figures at one end, one large at the other? 2:1 ratio. Small figures = orange ball, large figure = counterbalance in shed. In short, the counterweight has to be twice the weight of the small orange ball. Remember the counterweight already has weight on the lower portion, take that into account and place the correct pieces on the upper side.

I've left some of this for you to solve, but come back if you still are having problems.

This puzzle is a real stinker, so don't worry if you can't work it out... I had to have it spelt out in black and white!!

Not surprising -- this puzzle is hard for almost everyone!
The following really is a spoiler (and very long-winded on my part http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif), so scroll down if you want it, but don't if you still want to figure this puzzle out on your own (or if you don't feel like hearing me rattle on http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif).

ok.

When you look in Saav's lab, you see 3 balances and they are all balanced evenly. One shows 3 people hanging from a stick with an off-center fulcrum, one shows 4 wooden balls and 1 crystal ball, and the other one shows 4 crystal balls and one metal ball.

So now we have some information:
1 crystal = 4 wood
1 metal = 4 crystal
The people one we don't really know anything about for sure, but we should keep it in mind.

Off we go to Amateria. We see a lever mechanism with an adjustable fulcrum, a small ball (which looks orange because of the sunset), and a gigantic magical white ball that drops from the pagoda every time we pull a lever. Unfortuantely, that ball keeps smashing into a million pieces, so we have to change something. We have control over 2 things -- the position of the fulcrum and the composition of the counterbalance (i.e., the giant white ball).

Careful examination of the small orange ball from the top and bottom reveals its composition -- 7 wooden pieces and 1 crystal (or, since 1 crystal = 4 wood, 7 wood + 4 wood, or 11 wood).

So, how do you balance a lever? The most obvious way is to center the fulcrum and have each side weigh the same. Ok, so we know the orange ball weighs the same as 11 wood. When we look at the stand to make the counterbalence, it is already made of 4 wood pieces. Easy, right? Just add the equivalent of 7 more wood pieces -- oh, whoops, we don't have the right pieces to do that.

Plan B:

Set the fulcrum off-center and weight the sides differently (think about that balance with the hanging people -- make sense now?). So if we set the fulcrum off-center and make the counter balance weigh twice as much, we should still get a balanced lever mechanism.

So now we need to make a counterbalance that weighs twice the orange ball, or 22 wood. The stand is made of 4 wood pieces, so we just have to add another 18.

Crystal = 4 wood
metal = 4 crystal = 16 wood

If we add a piece of metal (16) and 2 wood pieces (2) to the wooden base (4) we get a total of 22! So now we just need to set the fulcrum of the mechanism off-center and we're home free! Woo hoo!

Wow, I'm glad I didn't have to go through all that. IMHO the "hangman" toy in Saav's lab was not relevant; I think it just meant that Saav could "balance" his rage against Sirrus & Achenar by getting even with Atrus.

Anyway, if you caught the 1:4:16 relationship of the 3 types of spheres, you can solve the balance puzzle with no reference to the toy or to the orange rolling ball.

If the iceball crashes as it tries to access the balanced track, the weight is too heavy. If it rolls across that track and flies off the other end, the weight is too light.

1) What are the lowest and highest weights you can put on the platform in the shack?
2) Pick half the weight and put it on, then try the 3 positions of the gear wheel outside. Too light or too heavy?
3) Whichever it is, you know which way to go with the weights. So change the weight to be halfway between where you are now and the extreme value in the right direction. Too light or too heavy?
4) Repeat until you zero in on the correct value.

That's cool, wstrohm -- I never thought of attacking the problem from that direction. By the way, the process I went through sounds a lot more cumbersome when you type it all out like that -- I didn't find it burdensome while I was solving the puzzle, that's just sort of how I think.

Heh, I didn't even catch the part about the hangman balance. I did get the other one though. But solving that puzzle I just did trial and error. But I thought that age was the easiest. I gave up on voltaic for now and am trying to figure out the squee. But the roller coaster ride was a riot.
