in a thread, when people say 'bump' what does that mean?

I have my own assumptions but i wanna make sure.

It brings a thread that is lower down in the list to the top. However too many people are bumping for no reason at all.

all that it means is that they think the post should be higher up, and therefore by posting it takes the thread higher up the page. And since they dont have anything useful to say (lol) they instead use the word "bump"
