I'd like to request for the "rating" column to be removed from all these forums. It seems to be a pointless thing to have because I believe only one (or possibly two) people actually use it. Whenever there are ratings, I rate the thread as the lowest rating possible and that usually drops the 5 check (or 5 star) rating to 3. A low rating shouldn't drop it that much...if more people were using the system.

How do others feel about this? Do you rate threads? Do you think a thread's rating has anything to do with anything?

I don't mind being wrong about this. I'm easily annoyed and must be policed. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I think every forum struggles with whether or not to allow rating. In theory, good threads that everyone should read should have good ratings, while repeatitive questions and flame wars and the like get rated down so they get ignored. True I don't see it happening here as much as other places, but that doesn't mean it isn't necissarily useful. But do you really rate a thread at 1 check just because it recieved a rating at all? No offense, but most forums consider that a form of griefing. I basically think the rating system is okay as long as it doesn't get abused, but it's usefulness can be argued. (Fence sitters of the world unite! lol) ^_~

I pointed out the daftness of this in my thread "Forum rating system" by awarding myself five ticks. Also, you can vote repeatedly to affect the number of ticks on any thread. It does seem a bit pointless.

Oh, I didn't know you could vote more than once on the same topic. That does seem a little trivial.. All the other forums I've been on only allow you to vote once to stop abuse of it, etc. That's strange

So how does your rating a 1 "just because" help the situation at all? That kind of makes me mad, as it implies that the reason the forum rating system doesn't work, is exactly because of things like that happening.

I know. I'm mean. But actually, I don't usually do that "just because." I have done it in the past to check if people are really using the ratings system - because (as I have admitted) the rating system annoys me. One bad check shouldn't have much of an effect if the thread's rating is "true," but when I have done it, the rating drops by half (rounded up). Every time. Well, most every time. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I hereby promise not to rate them ever again if this thread causes them to either be removed or causes people to actually use them as they are intended.

In some forums I've been on the rating of a thread actually decides how likely it will be to show up in a search engine. Ie, a low-rated thread will fall to the bottom of the search (if it shows up at all) while the high rated one floats to the top. Not sure if that is how it works here though? Haven't done any searches for threads yet, lol
