Is it practical in real life for a soldier to carry a sniper rifle (for far range) AND an assault rifle (for close/medium range)?

In standard Ghost Recon, there is no such kit. I did find a kit in the NMM mod that has a sniper rifle with a submachine gun, which works for close combat but still leaves my medium combat skills somewhat lacking (and also comes with a bad sniper rifle).

No it wouldn't be practical for a sniper to carry an assault rifle as his secondary weapon. Apart from the problems of crawling through the bushes with a second rifle, you would also have the extra ammunition to carry.
In real life the sniper would be with a "spotter" who would carry an assault rifle and look after the close in fighting.

US Sniper teams operating in 2 man sniper teams has the Sniper with the M24 or w/e sniping rifle, and the observer with the M4 or M16 series weapons with the M203 attachment

In germany it is so, too,
We have a sniper and an observer.
But they have tents outside in the forests, where
they got their equitment.
And in the equitment is a smg.

The Dragunov is essentially both, although not particularly outstanding in either role. HK PSG1 and MSG90 could also be considered hybrids (leaning more toward a sniper role). HK21E may be the best of both worlds offering "sniper rifle-like accuracy" and an 800 rpm cyclic rate from box or belt. Cool.

The snipers here in the US work in 2 man teams. both are armed with an M16 series weapon and the sniper rifle is kept in a drag bag. Drag bag-bag used to hold sniper rifle when not in use. Is drug behind the sniper in crawling maneuvers. This allows for them to lay down fire more quickly. It was once said by a brilliant man that "the first of the opposition to put the most lead into the air will most likely win the confrontation." I saw it on the history channel.

It is only becoming increasingly common for special forces snipers to carry a smaller secondary weapon such as a submachine gun. H&K and IMI both make very compact and effective weapons (although the Tavor has barely entered into production) that are admirably suited for this purpose.

"A person should not choose the form in which he wishes to perform the service of the Lord, but he should perform it in any manner the opportunity affords. He should be like a vessel into which anything may be poured - wine, milk, or water."

Chavez didnt have a designated observer either.

the Spotter//Observer is the more experienced sniper, and he calls the shots

I saw a program on the British Royal Marine Commander snipers. I think that the sniper only has his rifle, while the observer carries an L85 or SA80. It was pretty cool, they put the rifles in little cases strapped to their leg, so that they don't get in the way when they low crawl.

When the going gets tough, the tough go cyclic.
