ok there's something up with the tree level, I'm not sure if Revelationist made a mistake or it's supposed to be there, but every single webpage has a link to page 17 right in the middle horizontally and a bit to the bottem vertically.

ARG!! I've gone through every page, even the ones you can't normally get to! I've looked at every page's source code for hidden links, I've found a few, but so far they haven't gotten me anywhere! I wrote a program to do Rot1 to Rot26 on the codes, and that hasn't produced anything!

If the puzzles in MystIV are as good as this, then I'm in heaven http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I've found 15 characters in total, two of them non-alphanumerics (from the selenitic age).

I've tried working on the characters based upon the age they were found in (ms = selenitic, c = channelwood, mc = mechanical age), and that doesn't seem to do anything.

I don't know what this has to do with anything but I found a series of secret images at this url

http://revelationist.com/images_for_week_four_mreur/m#.jpg

Just change # from 1 to 12, the first few are normal, but the later ones are secret.

Also try

http://revelationist.com/first_day_fourth_week_g.html

it'll give you a list containing some secret pages.

Other secret pages are

http://revelationist.com/first_day_fourth_week_c14.html
http://revelationist.com/first_day_fourth_week_c32.html

Another set of secret images

http://revelationist.com/images_for_week_four_mreur/mss#.jpg

Change # to 1 to 25, r, c or l

Hell, these bring back memories. No solutions, but memories. Revelationist was right - this week is a doozie.

Thanks for the secrets, Dudemeister, looks like the stoneship age is on the site, if not in the puzzle...

Now why would that be?

OK, let's start looking at this a little more technically - it's probably going to be a group effort in the end (At least, looking at it from this end it is!)

MC9A = S = 19 = 083
MC10A = W = 23 = 087
MC11A = E = 05 = 069
MC13A = M = 13 = 077
MC14A = E = 05 = 069
MC15A = I = 09 = 073
MC16A = I = 09 = 073
C16A = M = 13 = 077
C17 = R = 18 = 082
C18 = O = 15 = 079
C19 = D = 04 = 068
C24 = S = 19 = 083
C31 = L = 12 = 076
C34 = V = 22 = 086
C37 = R = 18 = 082

Those are the http://revelationist.com/first_day_fourth_week_#####.html (Replace #### with, for instance, MC16A) pages that the letters came from, and the number in the alphabet the character came from, and the ASCII code of the character.

Anybody notice anything from this, or am I barking up the wrong Channelwood?

Another very importating thing I think is that in the channelwood age after you get past the first R, every page has a link back to R (c17). Similarly with the second I in the selenitic age, although the link is only one pixel large. In the mechancal age there is a link to m13 on every page after button that lowers the walkway. Although m13 doesn't exist, so I don't know what to make of it.

Another point, certain pages have a little mark in the upper right corner (m, c3, c4)

The folder that contains all the images has mreur in its name. Not sure what that means

mreur probably stands for Myst, Riven, Exile, Uru, Revelation But this is just a wild guess.

Here's what I've been thinking:

Apply a number to each letter (A=1, B=2, C=3, etc.)

We have one each of E, L, O, R, V, and W.
The sum of these (5+12+15+18+22+23) is 90.

There are two each of I, M, and S.
The sum (9+13+19) is 41, double that (because there are two of each) and we get 92.

95 + 82 = 182

I'm thinking that this may correspond to a sheet in the fireplace codebook. Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of Myst nearby, so I can't check this.

Well, there you have it. The ramblings of a madman. Hope it helps.

EDIT: corrected numbers, I didn't see the second E, but it was quite plainly there. Also, I personally find it interesting that the difference between the singles and doubles is now only 2.

J5892
08-30-2004, 02:53 PM
Ghostway, you don't have all the letters.

LazerFX
08-30-2004, 02:53 PM
Right, I've also catalogued the numbers shown and their locations:

MS13 = 153.4
MS14 = 130.3
MS15 = 055.6
MS16 = 015.0
MS17* = 212.2
C2 = 724
MC2 = 221

* - has no letter associated with it.

I thought there might be an association between these and the letters (Some sort of mask, perhaps), but it appears not, as there are a total of 26 numbers, and just 15 characters.

I've also put the characters (assuming 'i' for the exIle daggers) through a anagram search, and come up a blank...

Ghostway - Your reasoning might be valid, if I could figure it, but you're running on far too few letters... you've got EIILMMORSSVW - which is 12 letters, we've actually got 15 (deeiilmmorrssvw)...

[second edit]Thanks for updating that, ghostway. I looked up the number of the page that the final myst fireplace was on, and found that it was actually page 158 (yay for walkthroughs ;D), so it doesn't look like that http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif[/second edit]

This is an easier puzzle than you think.
There are fifteen letters.
Find the right words to use all fifteen.
The solution is a description of the game.

there are none.

Only discovered the new puzzle first thing this morning (UK time), and solved it.... with Revelationist's clue about the words, I didn't even need an anagram solver (once I saw what the last word might be, it was simple).

Guess I'm too late to get a point, but sent an e-mail anyway.

It might be middle of the night wherever he is - or something funny like that. Don't forget also that it's approaching crunch time for deadlines, etc - if he/she's part of the Cyan/UBI team they're going to be working their asses off to get MystIV out of the door on time...

However, I do share your concern, Revelationist hasn't been as astoundingly prompt as normal. I hope this is just because of work, and not other problems (Because other problems might mean the game being late ;D)

And, I know I've said it before, but - isn't it nice source as well? I mean, even the image maps, normally a nightmare of parsing and formatting, are well formed, nicely designed and consistent throughout the site!

Whoever did this was either a real hot-rod HTML guru (Not just your ordinary guru, but one who knows how to make more than the normal HTML, but who knows how to make nicely formed, readable, understandable HTML (not always easy)) or had one hell of a program to generate the files.

Hey, Revelationist - could you please tell us (or at least, me http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/icon_twisted.gif) if you did the HTML using a package, or if it was hand-generated; or generated using a package and tweaked, etc.? Thanks!

That's a LOT of html to write(each individual page in the puzzle) , plus the links, which require individual pixel coordinates. Seems almost impossible to do by hand. Maybe some of the stuff is, but it seems very likely that this puzzle was done with a program.

I'm desperate to even get a point...never mind a prize..!

My darned real life job keeps interrupting me..! Sheesh..!

[Hoping Revelationist posts before I go home and then I would have to deal with dial-up.]

Cool, now it's fair for the people (includes me) who have school/work when he posts. I usually have to start working on the puzzle 3 hours after he posts. I'm surprised ten people don't solve it within an hour of posting, it took me 20 minutes to solve yesterday's puzzle. I know there are many people here that can solve these things faster than me, and I have 2 points.

Well one thing ive noticed is that rev likes to throw us a curve once we get a handle on his puzzles......in other words he's making this one different in order to keep us from doing just that.

nice point stu, genevieve spung to my mind, but i dismissed it, might be part of it tho?

if it helps anyone (and isn't really obvious to everyone) it might be a phrase (used before?) describing the exile or myst games in general, maybe along the lines, but wildly different from:
