View Full Version : Shadow problems with Radeon 9600 Pro

Tried Catalyst 3.6 , 3.7, 3.8. All the other hardware drivers are up to date. Using Win XP SP 1, Dx 9.0b
Basically, the game displays shadows only from static objects. So i don't get shadows from those spinning fans, curtains, etc. anywhere --- neither on Sam, nor on walls. The strangest thing is that SUCH shadows can be seen in cutscenes ( especially in the very 1st one --NSA HQ). But not in the game ---so when light comes through some holes in the wall, it cannot be seen on Sam or anywhere else http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
Never had such problems with my previous Gf ti 4200 .
Is this some ''driver-based performance cheating by ATI'' , or just an unfixable issue with Radeons?
Anyone had this problem ? Please assist.
Thank you in advance.

I've never had any problems with my Radeon, and ATI doesn't have any cheats in their drivers, that was Nvidia. Nvidia is also getting hounded about the 45.23 and the 51.xx drivers for having "optimizations" that knock down graphical quality for speed.
What your problem is that you installed an ATI card on a computer that had an Nvidia card istalled. Their drivers don't like each other. You need to do one of 2 things:
1. totally get rid of all parts of the Nvidia drivers and reinstall the ATI drivers. There are programs on www.guru3d.com (http://www.guru3d.com) that will clean out the Nvidia drivers from your system.
2. The easiest thing to do (I did this after installing my card) is to reformat and reinstall your os.
One of those two will fix it.
My system:
AMD XP 3000+ @ 2.23Ghz
1 gig of Corsair DDR PC2700 RAM @354Mhz
Radeon 9800 Pro video w/TV out core @434, mem @720
Windows XP SP 1
Microsoft Directx 9.0b
Antec TruePower TrueBlue True480 PSU
16x Antec DVD drive
24x10x40 Plexwriter CD-RW
1 Maxtor Diamond 9 160GB SATA hdd
1 Westerndigital 40 gig harddrive
1 Westerndigital 100 gig hdd (external)
Asus A7V600 VIA KT600 mainboard, 4-in-1 4.49
Creative 5.1 surround system

3.8. I've been playing the game since the 3.2s and I've never had this problem. The main thing you need to check is your AGP drivers that can be obtained from your motherboard manufactor's website.

Using the latest VIA service pack 4.49v (tried 4.48---same thing). Installed everything in proper order : Motherboard drivers, then Radeon , then dx 9.0b. Blah , blah , blah....
Anyway , that doesn't matter already http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif :
''Class 2 Graphic Adaptors:
NV2x/NV3x chips
Dynamic Lighting system = Shadow Buffer
Vertex position modifiers = Yes
Light beams stopped by depth texturing = Yes
Pixel Shader effects/filters/water = Yes
Reflection/Details texturing/Specular = Yes
Class 1 Graphic Adaptors:
R2xx/R3xx/Parhelia/Xabre 200/Xabre 400/Xabre 600/chips/Creative P9
Dynamic Lighting system = Shadow Projector
Vertex position modifiers = No
Light beams stopped by depth texturing = No
Pixel Shader effects/filters/water = Yes
Reflection/Details texturing/Specular = Yes ''
That's an extract from a Splinter cell patch info ---- explained everything for me.Except for the fact that those nice shadow effects are rendered in cut-scenes. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Anyway, thank you for your help gnogtr !!

The cut scenes aren't rendered, they are cinematics. They were created on the ideal system that was used for programming.
