Okay, my Raven Shield multiplayer has been getting laggier and laggier. And on the days when it's running smooth, the moment an enemy comes on my screen, everything freezes and then I fall dead. I can't even get a shot in; the frame rate is like 1 or 2 per second. I'm running a wireless home network ... is this the problem? I've tried even turning the firewall completely off; still lags. I only use it about 10 feet from the base, and it has a 250-foot range. Plus, it operates at T-1 speed. Does anyone know if this is the problem, and if so, how can I fix it? Please help; I want to be good again!
Here are my system stats:
CPU: 2.66 GHz Pentium IV, 580 MB RAM, 60 GB hard drive (65% free)
Internet: Wireless LAN, two wireless cards (same lagginess with other card off or on), speed varies from 1.4 Mbps to 1.8 Mbps.

These stats should be good enough!!

There is no such thing as wi-fi lag.

Yes , wireless routers need to ( I think ) compile the information and change it to a digital signal then transmit it to your reciever then change it back so your pc can rread it , this requires time and is crap for gaming same goes for wireless mice, and keyboards..

Horse crap.. I run a wireless network perfectly through my house, and experience no lag at all while playing Ravenshield. I do encounter drop outs, but those happen very rarely (once every 40 hours of playing online). Usually caused by some sort of frequency interference. If no other game is causing you lag online, then there is something wrong with your installation of the game. If other games lag pretty bad also, then I would suggest checking your wireless setup. One good recommendation I received for my set up is to plug your router into a different outlet then your computers. And 1.4 to 1.8 Mbps is pretty slow for the connection you talk about, I get 11Mbps on my cable setup alone.

Ok, here is something that happened to a friend of mine. After some investigation we found out that ...:

Windows Wireless Lan Service CR@P was getting in the way. For some reason it doesn't like some network cards. As you will use your own network Cards drivers you can disable this option in Services.

My friend had no problems browsing or anything. But we did a persistent ping to the router and it was doing 1ms all the time, but every couple of minutes it will do a 3000 ping for a second and go back to the 1ms.

After turning it off he is a happy bunny and has a Laggless play.

Hope it helps

I thought my wireless PCs were getting great signal strength until I upgraded one to Windows XP and it kept telling me that my connection had dropped, then it was excellent, then it dropped, on and on and on. Windows 98 never told me this but I'm sure it was going on anyway. So I watched my "bars" and every couple of minutes my link quality shot to zero and my signal strength plummeted.

Are you sure your signal is completely rock solid at all times? Note that the signal loss would happen only when data was being transferred. I thought wireless was great until I bought a laptop and found out that signal strength for 802.11b is a bit of a joke! I tried two PCMCIA cards, a USB wireless adapter, a 6db signal-boosting antenna and am on my second wireless router only to find out that 802.11b wireless strength just isn't what's it's hyped up to be.

And I agree, forget about wireless ethernet, mice and keyboards for gaming. It may be more "convenient" but it's not for hardcore gamers.

Yeah, singal strength can defintely be a problem when playing games. I saw the same thing with singal cutting out every couple of minutes when using a wireless adapter. Just yesterday I was playing some games with my friend. He was using a laptop and a wireless adapter, his singal strength kept switching from full to nothing every couple of minutes. In games, we would either get disconnected message, or it would constantly think one of was was dropping out.

However, I don't think this is what causing JuicyPhil's problem. He said: And on the days when it's running smooth, the moment an enemy comes on my screen, everything freezes and then I fall dead. If it was wireless adapter signal, it would freeze or disconnect him from the game every couple of minutes, not when the enemy came on his screen.

JuicyPhil, from the description of what's happening it seems that your system is being overwhelmed when alot of things happen at once on your screen, such as a firefight with the enemy. Your CPU and RAM looks fine, although how do you get 580 MB of ram? Do you mean you have 764 MB of RAM, and 580 is free? I think it might be your video card. Which one are you using?
