So I decided to try out BF3 with a big investment last weekend.

Specifically, $100 towards both the original game, Premium, and all the kit and vehicle and co-op unlocks.

Well, Close Quarters came out and I tested that out too.

First of all, the new guns that I've tried are all pretty good. The M417 is almost broken, since I ran around with it using iron sights (It's a sniper rifle in line with the M14 from COD, 20 round magazine, 2-3 shot kills and almost no devaition).

The new maps are tight-knit, but not overly so a la Killhouse or Shipment from COD4. If you like CQB, this doesn't let you down.

Now...

To the new game mode...

Gun Master.

For those of you who have played Gun Game, this is a pretty poorly done rip-off.

Everyone starts off on Pistols. For those of you who have played CS Gun Game, the old, old version had people starting on pistols and progressing to rifles, but the new versions, such as Turbo, reverse the order.

To make things different, you need TWO of any weapon to get a promotion. So that means you need 2 kills with a pistol to level up to the 93R, then 2 with that to the Magnum, then 2 with that to get the first SMG.

And herein lies the problem. Players who do not reach the SMG are slaughtered. And when you join the server, you default to the MP443, which means if you join mid-match, you're not winning. You don't start off in the middle of the pack, you start off on Level 1 with a pistol when people are using assault rifles.

From the top of my head, the order for Gun Master is:

MP443
93R
.44 Magnum
PP-19
P90
SPAS-12
MK3A1 Frag
ACW-R
MTAR-21
Aug A3
SCAR-L
LSAT
L86A2
M417
JNG90
M320 LVG (shoots frag grenades with 3 second fuse)
Knife

Basically, Pistols -> SMGs -> Shotguns -> Assault Rifles -> LMGs -> Sniper Rifles -> Frags -> Knife

You can see that it's a major uphill battle, especially when you get to the 8 kill grinde with ARs, for other people to catch up.

For those of you who knifed in GunGame to steal levels, that doesn't work either. Knifing does nothing. No stolen levels, no free kill count if you're stuck on Pistol. Gotta shoot them.

The nice thing about the game mode is that it allows you to level all the weapons' parts even if you haven't unlocked them, and very evenly, as well.

For example, here, where I got stuck and had a horrible time:
http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf3/battlereport/show/34401916/1/250072661/

I unlocked a whopping 6 Reflex Sights.

The kill capability is very unnerving: http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf3/battlereport/show/34411999/1/250072661/

You either do extremely well, or not, and unlike Classic Gungame where everything resets a la One Life/Round, you're just as likely to spawn really far from the action as you are to spawn on top of someone.

I havent had a chance to do BF3 so much lately so havent invested extra in it. Seems it would be something I would enjoy. However, I obsessed over gun game in CoD when it came out. If BF3 made gun master into what you mentioned that's where I might get a little aggravated (speaking from 1st hand GunGame experience). In time I may adapt to the feel of it so lets hope. Which area in the weapon cycle seems to be the most difficult to progress through to you?

The 3 handguns are very hard to do if you start late or if everyone has higher-level weapons. It's pretty much you succeed here or you lose. I think I got stuck on 93R in my first game ever since people had already gotten half way through the game. Huge hump to get over that makes doing well all the more important. Ammo is unlimited for all weapons, BTW, so no point in conserving ammo.

The 2 SMGs you get have 50+ ammo per magazine, basically allowing you to flatten any pistol users, and are relatively easy to clear.

The SPAS-12 is a one hit at point blank, and is easy to clear.

The Jackhammer has frag rounds, which it neglects to mention. I end up having to use it as a noob tube since I've never used frag rounds before.

Then you get 4 decent Assault Rifles that are super easy to use and pretty much outgun all the weapons above it. Probably the easiest portion of leveling.

The two LMGs aren't hard, but the LSAT has a horrible scope.

The M417 is a semi-auto sniper with an ACOG and a 20+1 capacity.

The JNG90 is a bolt action rifle. It has an ACOG and straight pull bolt, but on the CQB maps it's somewhat hard to get 2 kills, so people do get stuck here.

M320 LVG is the noob tube without the noob. It fires a frag grenade that has a 3 second timer. It doesn't peg opponents, and bounces off stuff. However, since you don't lose levels for suicide, you can bait yourself and your teammates for kills.

The final level is Knife. If you reach Knife, you basically win, because no one can steal your level back down. You just find someone, knife kill, and the game ends.

I loved BF2

But absolutly hated BF3.

The only real reason I can attribute to it is that I got BF3 for the console.

I felt like I should be having fun, but at no point was I ever more than frustrated with BF3.

*shrug*

Just when I talk myself into thinking Battlefield 3 would be a good purchase for me, I'm told a new reason why it's terrible.

Jace, it;'s definitely something to try for yourself. I have been playing since before it was console and that switch alone was enough to make me a skeptic. I became obsessed with Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. When BF: Bad Company came out I was feeling somewhat how you feel Rein about BF3, but I grew into it and respected the change. Of course BFBC2 made me a bit happier then BF3 made me forget what I was upset about in past games. I would say try it out first then decide if it's worth keeping in your game inventory.

Here's me playing: http://www.twitch.tv/rage_gaming07/b/321266982

I do better after I stop streaming because it just kills my processor half the time.

Battlefield 3 is generally a lot better if you're playing Conquest on a large map with vehicles. That's the original Battlefield game type and IMO it's still the best. Battlefield is less about close quarters gun battles and more about what's happening on the entire battlefield. That's part of the reason I haven't bought Premium, whoever thought that releasing Close Quarters before Armored Kill is absolutely insane. They're trying to cater purely to the CoD players by releasing more infantry-based maps, and that's just NOT what Battlefield is about.

Also, DICE and EA can't seem to get the balancing right in the game. All the major balancing patches have completely lopsided absolutely everything and it makes playing the game very confusing for a veteran like me (Veteran Status 10 (http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf3/user/Cortexian/)). The game still feels like it's legitimately a beta instead of a release title, and I have a really nasty feeling that EA is behind it by rushing out content. Every time they release a patch, they change (and break) so many things that you basically have to re-learn how to play the game. It's just not a feasible environment to play in for the long haul if you're looking for a game to play for a year or more.

When I play the game now I do one of two things:

Take vehicles with my friends.
Troll people to the maximum with C4, Claymores, Mines, vehicles, MAV's, and literally anything you could possibly think of.

Basically this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ugFEy1pOCQ), and this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0cKE3Yuaho), and this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKorNrdYuow&), etc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3SzhK-KX4M)....

Same here, well in the old school BF days at least. Run into their base, rig the main vehicles and go on my way back to the point. In that time of course you know someone falls for it and you get this pretty little kill notification. Years later it still never gets old.

I agree with you on Conquest. I'm just glad they didn't water down the series with 10+ gametypes.

I would say try it out first then decide if it's worth keeping in your game inventory.

That's the problem. I'm not going to spend $50 to test a game to see if I like it. I won't even pay $10 unless I know I will receive a good bit of enjoyment from it.

The single player and co-op are definitely worth some money. I wasn't a huge fan of the button-mashing sequences in single player though.

There's also MANY hours of fun to be had playing multiplayer. I kinda lost interest once I unlocked and tried all the weapons/kits/gear.

Completely understandable. Try to borrow a friends copy someday and let us know how you feel about it if you do. It's worth a shot at least.

If I can get my hands on a free copy to try, I definitely will. Why have they not released a demo? There was a Battlefield 2 demo! I asked on some forum once, and I was told I should have applied for the beta if I wanted to try out Battlefield 3.

LMAO, that's a perfect example of what the term "beta" has become. So many sheeple out there think that betas are just an opportunity for them to play a game before it's released, and they think they're so awesome for getting to play it. A true beta (like in GRO's case) is not a demo, or a trial, it's an actual development build with bugs and errors that need to be identified and fixed.

I really wish other developers would stop throwing the term "beta" around so loosely.

Gun Master. Note the processor drops result in frame rates < 20 and back up to 60. I play much better when not streaming.
