In 04/05/1945 Grand Admiral Dönitz, orders all U-boats to cease offensive operations and return to their bases.

They could end the game with you recieving the message to return to base, but you have a choice to ignore the orders and fight to your last torpedo. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif

I'm sure I would be http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Actually Red, I've a historical question for you. What submarines made it to Argentina and what happened to the actual subs once they were abandoned ? Did any actually make it or was it all rumours ? My knowledge in this area is very poor.

i know of 1 u-boat the U-234.

On 16 April, 1945 she left Norway and was enroute to Japan with extremely important cargo (drawings, a Me-262 jet fighter in crates and 550kg of uranium ore, several high ranking German experts on various technologies and 2 Japanese officers) when Kptlt. Fehler, after hearing the cease-fire orders on May 4, 1945, decided to head for the USA and surrender.

Per tradition the Japanese men took their own life via sleeping pills rather than being captured.

Here is a picture of the sub http://www.uboatarchive.net/U-234.htm

Yes, I'd seen a programme on the history channel about U234. I fascinating episode. I'm shaking my memory and cannot remember if I've ever seen any programmes that definitly say some boats made it to Argentina. I know there were rumours of top german officials and at one point Hitler himself having made his escape there in a sub, but I'm not sure if any of the stories were true. Did any boats actually get there. If they did, did the argentine government impound the boats.

Yes they did. Try to pick up a copy of Heinz Schaeffer's U-Boat 977 (W.W. Norton, 1952; paperback by Bantam Books, 1981). In it Schaeffer recounts his whole career, including U-977's escape to Argentina and the time after when certain people claimed that Hitler survived the war and accused Schaeffer of smuggling him out!

My apologies. Schaeffer says he was ready to hand the boat over to the Argentine Navy but international politics intervened. U-977 was handed over to the United States as a war reparation and on November 13, 1946 was torpedoed by the U.S. Navy as part of an exersize.

Please excuse my delay to response.....

There are two well documented cases, U-530 and U-977.

http://www.uboat.net/boats/u530.htm

http://www.uboat.net/boats/u977.htm

Both pick-uped by USA

There are lot of comments and afirmations of they was not the only sib reaching our coast.....

I hear about a Type XXI wich was quickly pick-uped by USA forces........ no documentation about it.......

There are many more especulations about a lot of them incoming and outgoing........ and the objective of this travels......

And there are some sonar scanning of suposed XXI subs sunk in our coasts.......

Mmmmhhhhhhhh...........

Here you have, you can use a web traslator.......

http://www.hitlers-escape.com/imagenes.htm

Is from a summary of a book.....

Here the main page..........

http://www.hitlers-escape.com

There is a good book here with an exhaustive investigation of this facts called :

"Operacion Ultramar Sur", I do not know if it is edited in english......... but may be......

I forget a comment.........

Here there is a folkloric history, about the U-530 arrived here......

The history tells, the U-530 suffered a severe damage, I do not know, in combat or in an accident........

And its hull was ...I do not know how to said in english.......... so stressed, for hard jobs as combats.......... and it remains near of out of service or for training.......... I am not sure if it is true........

Comments saids, the U-530 arrived here was not the real U-530 , instaed was a twin U-boot.........

Crew ariived here was so young, around 20 years, and onboard was lot of "cigarettes" tins or cans..........

And no body smokes on board...... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

acually. my teatcher told me about his father who was on a norwegian cargo ship when the war ended.

and about 8 hours after they got the happy message that the war was over. a german u-boot
torpedoed his ship killing 21 men.

so. what i am wondering about. did not the u-boot captains get the message? or was it just some man who was to proud to give up?

jagtigermk2

I guess the U-boat captain took the answer to the grave.

I don't believe that story.

According to ALL sources I've ever seen the last ships sunk by a german Sub were the Avondale Park and the Sneland, both were sunk by U-2336 on May the 7th 1945.

That is before the surrender.

radsov

If ParaB's sources are correct my guess could be the "Chinese Whispers" effect as the story was passed down over time. The war was all but over before any offical surrender, so a story that was originaly;

"We were torpedoed when the the war was all but over"

could easily become over a period of half a century.

"We were torpedoed when the war was over"

Even between just three people over time the story can change. Especially if the teachers Father was very annoyed (to put it midely) at being torepedoed at a very late stage in the war. He, when re-hearing the story did not bother to correct his sons unintentional error.

- Just my thoughts on this - http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Just for the sake of argument, let's assume for a moment the story is true.

Eight hours is not a long time. Because of Allied air activity, no sane U-boat captain dares surface during daylight hours. Underwater he can't recieve a message. Message is sent at 08:00 hours. At 16:00 hours he torpedoes the merchant, not having surfaced and unable to use the radio.

I'm not saying I believe it really happened, I'm just expressing a view of how it COULD have happened.

When the war timeline reaches the end and the war is over, poof! your ship vanashes and your sent adrift on a raft for surrender. (kinda like the crew scuttles their boat.) LOL http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/10.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
