I've noticed two things. I built my nursery and while it does seem to contain my retired horses, they still take up space inside my barn. Apparently they're being counted twice, in both the barn and in the nursery? I thought the nursery was supposed to house them to free up space in the barn, but the barns still account for them in my free slots.
The second thing is racing. I've found that I can only race once every eight hours, no matter what horse I use. I've tried racing with other horses, no matter what the mastery level is or how much cheering I get, it always gives me second place and then boots me out, saying I can't complete the action. I can then use the horse to do something else, like training or the petting zoo. So it's like he never completed the action and it canceled me out.
