Talking Turkey

With the USians tying Thanksgiving to Christmas instead of harvest time, there was a lot of talk about turkey, stuffing, and all the fixings. Kiz, was also invited to her very first Thanksgiving dinner.
*************************************

I didn't know that. From our part of the US, Thanksgiving is still linked to the pioneer harvest celebrations. Not a religeous holiday as Christmas is (was supposed to be).

I liked the news letter et. Short articles and topical for the year past.

Thank you one and all, but I couldn't have done it without the forum lunatics posting away.

MM, could you tell they are cats this time? I did make the picture a bit bigger. And now you know why I wanted you to lose the link after okaying it. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Bob, Thanksgiving was moved to the date it is for the sole reason of tying it to the Christmas shopping season. The harvest moon usually falls in September. Picture New England at the end of November...they would have been frozen turkeys! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Homer, you're both imp and pixie! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif It just depends on your mood!

And my memory isn't that good. January was constructed solely from memory. I just went crawling through the early pages...and had page one done just before the forum moved. Most of URU was lost with the move so I started researching the minute Al warned we were going to be moving.

No doubt about it...this group is insane. And that includes me. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

Thanksgiving was first established on a national basis by George Washington as November 26. Later Franklin Roosevelt moved the date up to 20 November or thereabouts. Then it was moved again to the fourth Thursday of the month of November.

Now with Christmas shopping starting on the day after Halloween I guess you could say it is part of the Christmas holiday festivity. This is part of the modern shopping pattern. But, back when the Thanksgiving event was started this country was mostly rural and farm types and the Christmas shopping was more subdued and personal and I doubt that it lasted for a month or more.

Today, in my part of the country it is still considered a separate event. The date was not moved to be a part of Christmas it has been more or less what it is today for over two hundred years.

CK...I think some of the gents in here have been a very bad influence on you! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Bob, I meant the first Thanksgiving. And I believe we had a calendar change between when Washington established the holiday and it was moved for commercialism. I could look it up, but I've had a very long day. But you're right about the shopping (and annoying advertising) starting November 1st. You don't suppose they'll change the date again do you? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

et, you shouldn't be worried about the guys in here, you shuld worry about my fellow drummers. I wonder why there are only 2 girls in the class now?

we had five girls my freshman year, and unless we get some freshman girls next year, we'll only have one girl my senior year. (New Highschool being built and almost done, people are going to be transfered.)

et - this is one of several sites.

http://www.holidays.net/thanksgiving/pilgrims.htm

In 1621 the 1st Thanksgiving with native americans is believed to be mid-October.

Then in 1624 Gov. Bradford ordered Nov 29 as a day of thanksgiving.

These were the Puritan colonist and then in the 1770's George Washington set the date of Nov 26. for the US folks.

I don't see any room for changing the date to accommodate the Christmas event. That must be a new england fable.

I did enjoy the newsletter - so there.

No Bob, it is a retailers fact...the changed date the second time. And I'm certain there was a major calendar change made in there somewhere...just not sure when.

And did you know after you say "so there" your supposed to say "NYAH" http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif Glad you like the issue though.

It just dawned on me I did an entire year in review without once mentioning "knobby knees." http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

I broke the links myself. It's a private site after all, and I'm entitled to do that. All pages are still intact...want to play try to guess the URL?
