Dunno why, but the USAS-12 seems to be one shotgun that tends to have balancing issues in Battlefield games, which I believe is largely due to the rate of fire compensating for any other deficiencies.

Battlefield 3 specifically has issues with all of the auto-shotguns. Even the Saiga which is semi-auto is pretty crazy.
IMO, multiplayer games should only ever add pump or semi-auto shotguns as "common" weapons that anyone can use. It's hard enough to balance shotguns to be close-range killing machines but not be completely overpowered compared to other guns. Keep the auto ones for single player games where you need to mow down a bunch of enemies.

So....shall we give Recons here a shotgun? Personally, I've had fun playing "invisible shotgun" in other games, but not so sure that'll be fun for those on the other end of the barrel in this game.

The thing about GRO is that, technically they could be balanced by increasing pellet count while decreasing pellet damage, thereby making toughness capable of reducing a shotgun blast down to survivable levels a tad. 12 projectiles instead of 8 adds an additional 4x toughness in HP savings.
