It seems that I can't get a kill to save my life. I could go be completely still going full auto on someone wihtin melee range empty half a clip and not kill them.
Other times I burst 4 or 5 times in the chest and still can't get a kill?
Is it the fact that I am not leveled up enough? (lvl 4) Is it because the starting assault rifles suck?
Is it becasue I should be specialist or recon and not assault.
Your help is much appreciated.
Other than that I think the game is fantastic and I have never had this much fun getting owned over and over and over.

The starting weapons for each class are very respectable in this game, and level doesn't really matter that much when it comes to player vs player combat. I'm often killed by people wielding the Mk 5, M27, and M24.
The only thing I can recommend is to shoot that M27 in bursts. It has a fair bit of recoil that can be decreased with a recoil compensator, and it's FAIRLY accurate and close to medium range. I suggest persistence until you get the hang of the rifle. It took me a few hours worth of matches before I was using it effectively, but it was well worth learning to manage the recoil.

Buy the modified ammuntion and use it in-game by hitting (I think) the Z key. Your shooting might not be as bad as you think; enhanced ammo certainly increses the lethality of your shots on target.

Buy the magnum ammo for added effect and just keep plugging away with a primary weapon.
If you haven't noticed, yet, as you progress in kills with a weapon, it's modelling proficiency with a weapon/weapon-type, just as in real life. So, like the rest of us who don't compete with the ADD/twitch freaks, you will build up greater probabilities for critical hits...
Have faith and keep grinding the levels out...

I resent the ADD/twitch freak comment! Has anybody seen my slippers?

I am super-twitchy when I aim, because I come from a time when twitch shooting was required. (Tribes 1). There was no way you were going to hit a flying-boosting target with a disk launcher through careful aiming. Nowadays, I get called a spaz or a hacker because it looks like I snap to people's heads :(

Another thing that might help you that is greatly helping me and it's the same advice I give in *Gasp* COD.
But turn up your sensativity!
Every Day or week, turn it up a few notches. Or just take the leap and bounce up by like 20%. The less you move your hand the less time it takes to get your target with in the crosshair's.
Also in point blank situations and you are desperatly trying to track someone and your shots are not connecting. Drop prone. (not talking about dolphin diving) But dropping prone gives your opponent another direction to try and track you while you aquire him.
Recoil pushes your gun up, so dropping prone is the quickest way to get out of the killzone.

the only reasons you fail here could be:
-your weapon handling is low and you cant react quickly enough in close combat
-your weapon firerate is low and you dont have enough troughput
-your aim is off and you spray too much ( always scope )
-your reactions are too slow
aim for the head, react quickly, get a weapon for close combat, the C version of the guns is optimized for close combat.
become better in close combat first and then advance to ranged combat
assault is an excellent choice for starters, you have a higher hp and a higher armor so your survival chances are actually higher than the ones of a specialist or a recon,
you can exploit the game and floor dive ( lay down in front of the enemy ) so the enemy wastes bullets on the blitz shield of your back, use heat a little later in the game since its a little more tactical.

Play counter strike. Seriously I started to play a little css while the servers are offline and it pretty much forces you to learn to aim for the head and it will improve your reaction times because it is so fast paced. Note: Normally I hate css because of the fast pace but it does up your skill use it as a training aid.

I would also recommend picking an appropriate aiming rail accessory. I know everyone loves their 4x ACOGs, but there are better choices. The M68 Aimpoint (I think Reflex 1x in the menu, looks to be a tube on a riser with a battery tube on the top right corner) is great for those people navigating CQB.
Perhaps we should get a thread started for all the scope views!

^played a ton of CS back in the day and am looking forward to CSGo and Tactical intervention!
I have go tthe hang of the shooting for the most part now. Thanks for the pointers. I just realized this is somewhat MMOish in terms of the armor inserts and ammo. I unlocked the third assault rifle and have no problem getting kills now. I just need to be smart with my movement decisions. I also see a lot of people getting kills with the MK 16 so I can't wait to unlock that. I also haven't reached level 8 for the armor boost either.
