I was playing in one matchup and somehow my movement controls went crazy. I couldn't go forward with out having to hold the w key or take cover because somehow my guy kept wanting to go backwards.

Probably lag caused the game to not notice your letting go of the "S" key. If it happens again, try pressing the key of the direction you're being forced into.
