View Full Version : Anyone else find beer really drinkable, especially on Fridays?

Maybe I'm just weird (I'm technically a moderator here after all) but does anyone else find that beer on a Friday night goes down amazingly well? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Now I like my beer, and I am pretty discerning, but I suspect that on a Friday night, it honestly doesn't matter what beer it is, it WILL go down smoothly.

What are your thoughts, gentlemen?

Yes. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

Usually pretty discerning though. Well at least any half decent canned or bottled will do though I have tasted some pretty rank on tap beer. One of the best in my town is actually a foreign beer, Staropromen, which I found in a nice little place run by a Czech couple.

Cheers on a sunny Friday afternoon.

So what do you suggest there joeap?

for myself I was big time into the Belgian Trappist and Abbey Ales (especially Rochefort6 and 8)but now I'm back to lagers and other lower gravity beers. I think all the flavour overloaded my tongue. That and the price.
Also, 10% alc/vol messes with a person after a while and having just one bottle seems kind of a shame.

Currently I'm drinking Sapporo breweries' Ebisu Original (in the gold can, not the green or red one for anyone who happens to be in Japan).
It actually has some flavour and body for a Japanese beer but is cheaper than the imported beers I can buy over here.

If price and the need to be not hungover tomorrow while playing with my toddler daughter all weekend as well as studying linguistics weren't issues, I'd be going for Budovar; Hoegaarden Blond and Verboten Fruchte; Fuller's ESB; and a mix of Chimay Blue; Sam Adams; Tsing Tao; Aventinus; Leffe Blonde; Delirium Tremens.

of course I would be dead if I had all of the above but you get the picture.

Allez les bleus! Go France! They always beat us in critical games (I'm from NZ) but at least they win well when they do play.

I can never view the Welsh, Scottish and Irish as threats. I suppose one day they might knock the All Blacks over, and Ireland have pushed hard, but somehow I'm never nervous watching those games, not like I am watching France, England or of course the great Southern Hemisphere teams of Australia and South Africa.
Of course, the day that happens will be declared a national day of mourning back in NZ. People there take it all too seriously.

Anyway, have fun. beer and rugby sounds like a good evening to me.

I think Dave Barry said it best:

"I like beer. In fact, I love beer. I love it so much that I only use it to celebrate important occasions, such as the fall of the Berlin Wall, or the fact that my refrigerator still works".

Still atleast 8 hours before I can sit down with a cold one though. Too much stuff to do today http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Well since I live in Geneva, a great local beer is called... Calvinus (http://www.calvinus.ch/) after John Calvin of course. Plus being in the heart of Europe we can get all the good Euro beers. Belgian, German, Brit etc. Some other good Swiss beer include Cardinal (had some tonight) and Klosterbrau. We get imported beer too, the odd Canadian or American brands (Samuel Adams and some of the better known Quebec artisan brews) lots under licence too.

That do?

What worth is the end of the work week without a beer? Right now an ice cold 'Acme Pale Ale' is waiting for my arrival home from work. It's brewed in Ft. Bragg, California. But in the end, I gladly drink and enjoy any brew that's offered in friendship. Cheers to another weekend, S!

Only if it is NOT brewed in the US. Beer here is like p!$$ water. Sam Adams is OK though.
Let's face it, once you've enjoyed a German beer you can't drink American stuff anymore.
I have fond memories of having great beers while watching the sunset in a few German towns. Thinking about it makes me want to go back.
Even some English beers are very good. I had special ordered a case of Theakston Old Peculier before as it was recommended to me. Very good stuff.

With the exception of Sam Adams, Anchor Steam and a couple other micro brews, American beer is awful. I had some beer in Guatemala that was better then American beer.

I did a whirlwind weekend in Prague back in 2000 (part of a larger month long trip to Hungary) and the beer there was fantastic. I tend to favor pilsners, and it seemed Prague was the place to drink it.

The beer in Hungary was pretty good, too, but they tend to be known for their wine more.

If I'm drinking beer at home, I'll pick up some Stella Artois or Pilsner Urquell.

I'd love one right now, but I'm broke. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

La Trappe Dubbel is lovely, isn't it? One of the best around, I think. The problem is that I can only buy it in 500ml or is it 700mL bottles. Sometimes that's great but in general I'd prefer a slightly smaller serving size.

1. There really is an Ace Pale Ale brewed in Ft. Bragg, California. (http://www.northcoastbrewing.com/beer-AcmePaleAle.htm)
2. Well, it wasn't really ice cold but a few minutes in the freezer with my favorite beer glass fixed that.
3. IMO a cordial setting always enhances the beer drinking experience even for really cheap American beer, though I never buy nor serve this kind of stuff.

Steiner - to be honest, when I last lived in NZ I didn't like Steinlager at all. However, my tastes have changed since then and I'm going back home in two weeks so I'll give you my considered opinion then.

From my old experience, I'd only recommend a few beers. Most stuff there is really insipid, lacking the crisp bite of a real lager, the malt and toffee of a British ale, the 'everything' of a Belgian ale. What that leaves you with is a bland, sort of sweet but not malt-y,not hoppy, not even fizzy! brownish liquid which is around 3.5 - 4% alcohol by volume.

what I plan to drink when I get home is a micro-brew named Emerson's Pilsener. That was one of the only NZ beers that struck me as actually having taste.
Some Monteith's stuff is okay, but nothing much grabbed me last time I was there.
I'm going to have to research this carefully in my upcoming trip.

What were you doing in NZ anyway?

Friendly Flyer - you'd love yakinikku then. You sit around a table which has a charcoal pit in it. They give you plates of strips of raw meat, chicken, pork and veges (but we never order them) and then you just put them on the grill and eat meat and drink beer as the flames leap up at your hands and the meat sizzles and goes all crispy. Lovely stuff. Once it's cooked, you pick up a piece with your chopsticks, dip it in a rich, tangy sauce and pop it in your mouth. Always brilliant.

I especially love the places that have time limited all-you-can-eat and drink specials.

Well, well, well.
Another Friday night has rolled around and, you know what? Beer still goes down well! Who would have thought that possible?

If I'm ever considered for the papacy this must surely be classed as one of my requisite miracles.

Tonight sees FSM partaking of Ebisu's new White beer. Bit disappointing as I thought it might be a Weissbier or something but actually is just a can of lager in a white can. Not that that is a terrible thing to be, you understand. A can of lager is never a thing to be sniffed at, not even in hayfever season.

The non-Weissbier is being ably supported by a phalanx of Heinekens. Just reward for an evening pent trying to work out my tax return in Japanese.

Uufflakke you got me the mood to hunt one of these down:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3449/3351806195_4a9f613316_o.jpg

Brewed in Chico, California, where I went to college in the 1980's and got my first taste of this brew. It's their spring seasonal brew with a rippin 9.6% by volume; more info here. (http://www.sierranevada.com/beers/bigfoot.html) Cheers!!!

Tonight is my Friday. I feel like the proverbial lion who is sat atop a hill staring out over the plains that teem with a cornucopia of options, savouring the contemplation of what is to come. Should one lager or ale? And then, having perhaps chosen to ale should one Summer Lightning, Old Peculiar, Banks Bitter or Butty Bach? Or perhaps one should indulge in a little multi-culturalism and, picking freely, choose choice.

Yum.

I watched Ghost Town last night, a suprisingly sweet little film. The conversations with the Doctor and hospital lawyer was pure Office.

Thanks to this thread I fell for all this beerist propaganda. Oh, yes - I was just like you....couldn't wait to get down town and play my part in the defence of the pub way of life. Lured in by its' promises of babes and good times - often expecting no more for my service than a take-away kebab or a curry. I was one of you - part of a happy band of brothers, sharing whatever fate could throw at us as we gleefully advanced from bar to bar and liberated the good times.

Now look at me...a pitiful self-parody of the man I once was. Where once I charged headlong into the fray at opening time, I find myself saving up for trips away. The lush joys of a king-sized mixed donner but a distant memory as I'm escorted by my jailor to an Italian restaurant. That awesome rush gained by starting on the beer early in the afternoon replaced by the humiliating spectacle of being seen in public sipping politely on another large cappucino. The boisterous conversations about babes and football usurped by lectures about trust and loyalty. The sad look on my comrades faces as I'm taken back to my cell before the night's over, for they know it could be them one day. They got me guys, they got me good, because I flew so low a parachute was useless. And if they can get me, they can get anybody. Don't let my loss be in vain - get out there and raise Hell tonight. Sink some for me. I'll be thinking of you, mentally counting you all back home safely.

Stalkervison - I suspect much editing went on. In a post with a topic like this i was careful to avoid the tell tale signs of drunk posting. Not once did I say "I love you guys", for example.

That bar you have set up must be fun. How many taps do you have? Heineken is okay but if you could have a choice then I'd have no hesitation in inviting myself over sometime, maybe bringing the guys in this thread!

Glad to see someone posting pics of Belgian beer, even if it is just for the MJ link.

Ploughman - great description. I must look for that in the local beer shop. They only have a few British beers though - Fuller's (I LOVE their ESB),Boddingtons (after several years of ignoring it I broke down and tried it. It tasted just like the can looked - insipid.), MacEwan's, some insanely expensive Trachair and occasionally Well's - I liked their Bombardier when I tried it.

</div></BLOCKQUOTE>

I just have my one little beer machine set up on the counter F/S which hold these kegs and has a refrigeration unit built in. What is really nice about the kegs is they're self carbonating and always give a nice head of beer. That and the fact I can have half glasses without opening up a whole bottle of beer.

The very best thing is now thanks to the counter top cooler I don't even have to go into the fridge to have a cold one when I want.

Just having a few brews as we speak... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Hmm, really? I'm not much of a pale ale fan, though most pale ales in the US like Sierra Nevada are very hoppy and bitter, and not my cup of tea. I prefer smoother more amber ales like Bass or the Coopers Sparkling Ale. I'll give the Coopers pale ale a try if I see it, I just picked up some more Cooper's Sparkling Ale and the place was all out of their pale ale...guess it's popular.

Ok, this is my first time visiting this thread and I have to say that I find beer enjoyable any day of the week.

Last night I lost count after 3 beers, most of which were Brand. I find it a rather tasty Dutch beer as I do Heineken Extra Cold.

I recently got sent to Holland for a job and now get to sample different Dutch beers. This compliments the time Ubi sent me to Germany and I sampled at least 14 different German beers over the course of 4 days.
