View Full Version : Ki not saving or sharing photos

i think i've asked Heimdall about this last year, but can't remember...

i've never been able to share photos with other players, or 'upload' them
to my personal imager...ever...on any shard, at any time...and i've
uninstalled and reinstalled UU so many times, for so many reasons, that
i'm sure that won't solve anything.
others are able to share pics with me, so the problem must lie on my end
of things.
also, photos don't stay saved on my KI after exiting the game...
and heaven forbid i try to link anywhere with a photo IN my KI...that
action takes me to a coloured screen...usually purple, blue or yellowish...
probably the background colour of where i'm trying to link...while there,
my Relto book will pop up when clicked, and closes when touching the linking page,
but no actual linking occurs...at first i thought i must have
gone offline, but, alas, no...
(i know this is lengthy, i'm trying to give as much info as possible)
this hasn't been an urgent problem, as i can still explore and play, but
it has been annoying...and my imager just sits there with this static look
about it...
there have been times that i've seen and experienced some very
strange sights while exploring and would love to share...
wish my KI would...
if anyone has any advice or knows ho to discipline a KI, let me know...

~ edited for content and adjusted to fit your screen ~

the photos ARE being saved to my "KI images" folder

I have a feeling that you need the more advanced KI in UU. That patches the one you've got. If that doesn't work, please post a dxdiag.

Your next fun is finding a link to the latest KI. Try asking in the UU Journey Continues forum.

i downloaded and installed userKI 1.1a about three months ago...and it did take some time
to track it down...it didn't help the photo
issue...
is this the latest?

EDIT:
if this is the latest, i can post a dxdiag...

Can you try nvidia driver version 56.72?
Do you have EAX enabled? If so, could you try turning it off?

You could also try talking to Mowog. He has the same card as you and only upgraded from 56.72 recently to play Myst V at its best.

56.72....sure! will give it a whirl...i had
61.76 when i played Revelation, but it made UU freeze...also will talk to Mowog...thanks Mr Zebe!
Eax was an option at one time...briefly...
then it went away...now it's greyed out...

EDIT:
looked on my bookmarked nvidia driver page
and can only find 61.76 as the next step up
from my 56.64, this is in the archives...
i'm not sure that going any higher than
61.76 would work for me in UU...
if you see Mowog, tell him i'm going to send
PM requesting location of 56.72 download...
thank you

Hi Nicodemus, I think you are looking for this:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html
checked Heimdalls sticky on drivers.
Can't find the 98 version though, might be because 98 is no longer supported.

Mr Zebe D

I missed something in your original dxdiag. You're running Windows 98SE. My expectation was that you were running XP Home or Professional.

I don't know what to recommend actually. Ever thought of upgrading to XP?

Hi, Hanna. 56.72 wasn't released for W98.

Nicodemus,

Yes, we've gone around a few times:
-- playing prime after UU: reinstall ?'s (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/746109302/m/646001337/r/597004337#597004337)
-- UU: Ki dispenser problem (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/524109302/m/508004627/r/822000237#822000237)
-- clean install/for 98se (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/524109302/m/863102416/r/863102416#863102416)
-- new Uru prime to experience UU? (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/524109302/m/224108306/r/368109216#368109216)

Did you ever re-install Win 98SE?

I'll repeat some of my earlier suggestions and add some new:

1. Install an additional 256 MB of system RAM. This may not solve the KI problem, but your entire system will run *much* better.

2. Since you're short of system memory, if you have many applications and processes running in the background, they could be causing problems with Uru. Use Ctrl-Alt-Del to close all but Explorer and Systray, then play Uru.
-- a. While holding down the Ctrl and Alt keys, press the Del key ONCE (twice reboots) to bring up the Close Program list.
-- b. One at a time, click on an entry to highlight it, then click on End Task. Wait for the confirmation pop-up, and confirm that you want to close the process. (This may take about 10 seconds.) If the pop-up doesn't appear, the process may have been closed directly.
-- c. Do Ctrl-Alt-Del, etc., as many times as it takes to close all background processes except for Explorer and Systray.

If you have only a software firewall, disable your Internet connection before closing the firewall program. An Internet connection without a firewall is an open invitation to hackers!

3. Uru sound problems can often look like video problems, especially with older Sound Blaster cards. Your PCI 128 chipset doesn't support EAX at all, or hardware sound acceleration very well.
-- a. Uncheck the 'Hardware acceleration' and 'Enable EAX effects' boxes on the Uru Setup menu's Audio tab. Uncheck one at a time, play Uru. Try playing with both boxes unchecked.
-- b. Start Dxdiag. Go to the first sound tab (Sound 1 if multiple tabs), which should be the tab for the PCI128 chipset - check the Device Name line. Move the 'Hardware Sound Acceleration Level' slider to the left to the 'Basic acceleration' tick mark. Play Uru.

Also try turning down the settings on the Uru Setup menu's Graphics tab as follows. Note what the settings are initially, so that you can reset them as appropriate.
-- Screen Resolution, set to 800x600
-- Color Depth, set to Low (16 bit)
-- Overall Quality and Texture Quality levels, set to Low
-- Full Scene Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering, disabled (both boxes unchecked)

Play Uru. If Uru now plays correctly, go back and reset these items one at a time, exiting and restarting Uru between each reset. If you find a setting that causes the problems to reappear, leave it changed and try resetting the remaining items.

4. Do all of the steps you can under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up With Win XP in Uru: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP (http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/6/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=400102&f=524109302&m=356106565).

For Win 98SE, step:
-- 1. Works for Win 98SE as written.
-- 2. Works for Win 98SE as written.
-- 3. For hard disk error checking, see Description of ScanDisk for Windows (Scandskw.exe) in Windows 98/Me (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;186365) (use Standard as Type of Test), or run a utility like Norton SystemWorks 2005's Disk Doctor.
-- 4. Works for Win 98SE as written.
-- 5. Works for Win 98SE as written. Clean out at least:
----- C:\WINDOWS\msdownld.tmp (Move any files you want to save to other folders.)
----- C:\WINDOWS\Temp
----- C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files (Delete any files in this subfolder.)
----- C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 (Delete any files in this subfolder.)
----- C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\<alphanumeric hash> (Delete the several \<alphanumeric hash> subfolders.)
-- 6. Defragment your hard disk(s). Use Diskeeper 9.0, or see Description of the Disk Defragmenter Tool in Windows 98/Me (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/186171/EN-US/).
-- 7. Not applicable to Win 98SE.
-- 8. Works for Win 98SE as written.
-- 9. Works for Win 98SE as written.
-- 10. For Registry error checking, use one of the repair tool options listed, or see Description of the Windows Registry Checker Tool (Scanreg.exe) (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/183887/EN-US/).
------ a. Click on Start > Run.
------ b. Type scanreg in the Open box.
------ c. Click on OK.
------ d. If errors are found but aren't corrected, type scanreg /fix in the Open box.
------ e. Click on OK.

5. You have NVIDIA's version 56.64 video driver installed. Download this driver again from NVIDIA's Windows 95/98/Me Driver Archive (http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_archive.html), and re-install it as follows:
-- a. Re-install DirectX 9.0c, available here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0a9b6820-bfbb-4799-9908-d418cdeac197&DisplayLang=en).
-- b. Reboot.
-- c. Uninstall the existing video driver using Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs.
----- 1. Click on Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
----- 2. Look in the programs list for "NVIDIA Windows Display Drivers" or "NVIDIA Display Drivers" and click on the listing to highlight it.
----- 3. Click on Add/Remove and follow the prompts.
-- d. Reboot.
-- e. If prompted, cancel the installation of the display adapter during bootup. Or, if given a choice of default drivers to install, select 'Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)', and reboot.
-- f. Using Ctrl-Alt-Del, close all background processes except for Explorer and Systray. (See suggestion 2, above.)
-- g. Click on Start > Run.
-- h. Browse to the driver installer file you downloaded, and double-click on it to put it in the Open box.
-- i. Click on OK to start the install process.
-- j. Follow the Wizard's instructions to complete the installation. Reboot when prompted.

If re-installing version 56.64 doesn't help, download version 45.23 (from the Windows 95/98/Me Driver Archive) and install as above.

6. Re-install Uru: Ages Beyond Myst from clean boot prior to applying the Until Uru patch. There are a couple of options under Win 98SE. (I typically use Option 2 for installing software.)

Option 1:
-- a. If you want to save your game progress and other folders, copy your \sav and subfolders, \KIimages, and \MyMusic (if you've copied music files into it) to someplace else on your hard disk.
-- b. Boot into normal Windows.
-- c. Use Windows Explorer to delete *all* Program Files Uru files and folders. Also delete the Program Files \Zero G Registry folder, if it exists.
-- d. Use Windows Explorer to search your C: drive for \temp and \tmp folders (click on Tools > Find > Files or Folders). Delete any files in these folders that aren't currently in use.
-- e. Click Start > Run.
-- f. Type msconfig in the Open box, then click on OK.
-- g. Click on the Selective startup radio button on the General tab.
-- h. Under Selective startup, if they're not grayed out, clear the check boxes for:
----- Process Config.sys file
----- Process Autoexec.bat file
----- Process Winstart.bat file
----- Process System.ini file
----- Process Win.ini file
----- Load startup group items (If you aren't currently loading all of the startup group items, the check box will be grayed out. In that case, click on the Startup tab and clear all of the checked boxes you find there. Note which ones you clear so that you can re-check them later.)
-- i. Click on Apply > OK > Yes to reboot.
-- j. Install original Uru, accepting the install defaults. Decline to sign up for Uru: Live at the end of the install process (twice). Also, do NOT apply the version 1.2 patch.
-- k. Check the Program Files Uru folders for read-only files and change attributes as necessary. There should be no Uru R-O files.
-- l. Restore the settings you changed in steps e. through i.
-- n. Reboot into normal Windows.
-- o. If you want to restore your game progress, copy your saved \sav and subfolders, \KIimages, etc., into their proper positions in the Program Files Uru folders.

Option 2:
-- e. While holding down the Ctrl and Alt keys, press the Del key ONCE (twice reboots) to bring up the Close Program list.
-- f. One at a time, click on an entry to highlight it, then click on End Task. Wait for the confirmation pop-up, and confirm that you want to close the process. (This may take about 10 seconds.) If the pop-up doesn't appear, the process may have been closed directly.
-- g. Do Ctrl-Alt-Del, etc., as many times as it takes to close all of the processes *EXCEPT FOR* Explorer and Systray.
-- h. Install original Uru, accepting the install defaults. Decline to sign up for Uru: Live at the end of the install process (twice). Also, do NOT apply the version 1.2 patch.
-- i. Check the Program Files Uru folders for read-only files and change attributes as necessary. There should be no Uru R-O files.
-- j. Reboot into normal Windows.
-- k. If you want to restore your game progress, copy your saved \sav and subfolders, \KIimages, etc., into their proper positions in the Program Files Uru folders.

this past hour i've spent most of my 'mad'
money to add 128mb of Ram...yay!...didn't help
with the Ki problems...(but i'm a little
less mad...although a little more crazy)
no...haven't reinstalled 98SE...yet...i have,
however, since last we spoke, bought an external
HD with 80 Gb to backup my computer before
reinstalling...slowly, but surely getting there.
now, since the last time i reinstalled
everything UU related (it's been some time)
have there been any updates to patches?
like the ABM patch? i have 38.9
let's see, i have the new KI, 1.1a i think...
is there a list of things to download and the
corresponding links posted somewhere? (hopefully
in one place)

also, unless it was a fluke, i tested a
theory and went to a shard with an avi with
no KI, then went to get one (with the sound on
even) and it worked! first time! amazing what
a little memory can do....
