You aren't mistaken, that is a glitch that several of us have now seen, I've seen it 4 times with myself being the invincible one on only one occasion.
Some quick clues that this may be happening:
<UL TYPE=SQUARE>
<LI>Can't kill opponent regardless how many bullets/rockets are used... opponent's plane will not start to smoke in this state
<LI>No targetting reticle around opponent's plane... this makes them difficult to see at a distance and of course you can't lock onto them
<LI>You notice somebody with an incredibly low death rate while they've racked up a considerable number of kills... this is of course not likely especially in a room full of 8 or more players all gunning for each other!

The fix is as suggested... the opponent has to crash... following this he/she should be destroyable by all others once again.
