I'm sick of running out of lives and having to wait for it to load and navigate so I can start over again.

Yup. That would make sense to me.

practice makes better. I would love to play a song repeatedly even if i get every note correct and not have to worry about it quitting out for me

Also wish the menu navigation was better so you could jump from leveler to free speed to accelerator with out going back and through all the cut scenes

Improved navigation is one of the things they've said they're working on for it.
Additionally, they've also said they're working on the riff repeater issue addressed by the OP.

I've discovered that you can pause and restart the repeater before you run out of lives without losing your progress. Oddly though, some modes will reset you to 5 tries, others will just restart the life you're currently on. I like that they give you a bit of motivation to improve ("GET IT RIGHT OR IT'S BACK TO THE MAIN MENU WITH YOU!") but it really is annoying when you're trying to nail a lick.

yeah i do this, it works but it is a hassle. I have to make sure my PS3 controller is within arms length. The game is really awesome but needs a lot of improvements.

actually, I love the way you can practice on Rock Band 3, please don't take me wrong, I love Rocksmith, but there are some points where Rock Band 3 did a great job, and the section practice is one of them, you can adjust the speed as much as you want, quickly change through sections, repeat as much as you want. If Rocksmith had that would be soo great.
