I'm not sure...but battles in Heroes V seem to go on for much longer than in the previous games. I mean, large battles between huge armies with high level heroes have sometimes lasted excessively long. It even felt like some battles lasted 15-20 minutes.
It seems to me that this is connected with what appears to be low damage levels. You attack a massive stack with a massive stack and only seem to take off around 10-30 guys (depending on tier). I could be wrong as it's been a while since I've played Heroes III, but I seem to remember a huge stack of units being able to annihilate much of another stack if it got the first hit in.
It may also be connected to hit points or defense ratings being too high for some units. I have had many experiences fighting Sylvan hunters that just don't seem to die while doing massive damage, but that contradicts the low damage level theory. Maybe I'm just experiencing game imbalances...
