View Full Version : My early impressions

I have been a ghost recon player since the very first game and I own every single one of them on various consoles and on PC so I was really looking forward to trying this.
This is my secong evening of playing and unfortunately I have had to quit after suffering through 20 minutes due to the frame rate being WAY below anything that might be considered playable - it was the same for me last night too.

Here are a few things I don't like

1. The client doesn't remember your log in details

2. It takes a long time to actually get into a game and play a match

3. It takes a long time to quit a match and get out of the game

4. The whole interface feels overly complicated (but that might just be me)

5. The framerate is apalling making aiming almost impossible

6. Hearing people talking during gameplay is very offputting (I heard a lot of swearing)

7. Movement feels very stilted and sometimes certain commands fail to initialise (like going prone, taking cover, jumping over obstacles)and sometimes I get stuck in the floor for no apparent reason

Here are a few things I do like

1. The fact that no-one can bunny hop is almost enough in itself to make me want to play this game http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

2. The maps seem small enough for new players to learn pretty quickly (like me)

3. A good tactical approach gives better results than just running around all guns blazing

A few suggestions

1. Address the problems outlined above

2. Implement some sort of matchmaking system based on skill. I was up against some players who were higher in rank than I was (and also some who were the same rank) and I found it extremely frustrating to look around a corner only to instantly die over and over again

Early impressions

I found the game to be clunky, over complicated and very frustrating to (attempt to) play.
The game runs terribly on my PC

Asus M4A77TD pro mobo
AMD phenom II (3.6 ghz)quad core processor
8 gb ram ddr3
GTX260 1gb palit overclocked gfx card
1tb hdd
50 mb fibre optic broadband

It almost feels like I am moving through treacle playing this game.

If the game played nice and smoothly (which I hope it will do when it comes out out beta) and all of the above problems are addressed and perhaps if one or 2 of my suggestions above were implemented (in particular the matchmaking system - we aren't all pro at these games...) then this has the potential to be the best free to play game of its kind available today.
As it stands right now it is simply too frustrating and I wouldn't play it more than once if I wasn't testing it.

Here's to tomorrow night when I try again http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Dislikes:

1) Planning on remembering only your account name, not also the password, as a security measure.

2) How long? Give me some specifics and we can check the server logs.

3) That is true and loading times will definitely be improved.

4) I'd love some specifics here. You can submit a ticket with annotated screenshots to our Tech Support address (check link in Launcher) and we'll definitely look into it.

5) We're working on considerable framerate improvements right now, it should be much better in January.

6) Our voice chat system is being refined at the moment, but you can always disable it in Options -> Audio.

7) Cover mechanics are broken in some places on the map, going prone can be tricky when next to walls or in cover, jumping is also buggy at times, many people get stuck in the floor on Roof Top especially... All known issues, but thanks for reporting them. Again, some more details would be great.

Likes:

1) Personally, I agree that bunny hopping is abused in many games. However, I do like strafejumping and walldodging in certain games, only if it fits into the game universe.

2) Which map do you think is best for new players?

3) One of the design philosophies: team play is key.

Suggestions:

1) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/typing.gif

2) We already have it but it's only partly implemented. Do note: "rank" has nothing to do with level. A player will get to level 99 by playing non-stop for a whole lot of time, but that doesn't mean he's extremely good. On the other hand, you can reach level 10 and already be a much better player than him because of pure gaming skill. Our ranking system will know how to measure this.

Thanks for the feedback and do return in January to see how we've evolved.

I have FINALLY managed to get back onto this game (xmas time is super busy for me) and here are my final thoughts

1. It took me 45 seconds to get into a room after clicking to join

2. It took me 35 seconds to get out of the room after clickong to leave

3. I had no idea if there was any possible way of choosing the room to go into? The game just puts me into one automatically

4. Once in the room I had little idea of what to do other than to shoot the opposing team - which proved to be almost impossible, they were just too good

5. The game ran very poorly again, it felt very jerky and I saw people teleporting around

6. The graphics seem very low resolution (I had it on the maximum settings) and there seems to be a haze over everything that (for me) is offputting

7. The framerate seemed better than last time for sure

In closing, for me the whole thing (for me) feels over complicated. I had very little idea of what I was supposed to be doing, I had no idea whether I had a choice of rooms to join or gamemodes to play, the framerate was improved but the game feels now like it might be skipping every other frame in order to run faster (by that I mean it is very jerky on screen - people stopping and starting with their movement for split seconds but constantly on and off making aiming at people almost impossible as they seem to teleport out of my line of sight), on top of this I was killed over and over again before I even saw the enemy.

For me to want to play this I would need the whole thing simplifying in game so that I knew for sure what I was doing.
I would need to be able to choose the room and gamemode rather than just be plonked into a room (I like to play alongside friends).
I would like to see a matchmaking feature where you can choose to play against only those of a similar skill to you - maybe based on your K/D and amount of matches you have played to achieve it because being killed over and over with no chance of getting a kill yourself is simply frustrating and stops me wanting to play it.

Sadly, I will now be saying goodbye to GRO. It is a shame, as I am a long time fan of Ghost Recon I was expecting so much more but as it turns out this game just isnt for me.
