It sounds like your computer doesn't meet the minimum requirements to run the game.
The main component is your video card must support shader 3.0.
The only way to fix these issues is to upgrade or replace your computer!

I bought Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and can't get it to install on either of my 2 XP computers. My main computer doesn't even show the disc up at all although I did get it show up once, tried to install it, got to around 80% then a little box came up saying 'data file too big' or something very similiar. The same box came up on my other XP computer too, although the disc did show up on there.
Out of curiousity I tried installing the game on my Vista laptop and it installed fine but couldn't play it because of the lag.
So why will the game install on my Vista computer but won't install on XP? Any ideas?

It sounds like your hard drive doesn't have enough room to install, but it would be strange to have both computers full.
It takes about 8 GB's to install.

No it's not that because the one computer, the drive is almost empty as I rarely use it and there was more than enough room on the hard drive of the other computer too: in fact I have now installed Far Cry 2 on it with no install problems whatsoever.

IDE optical drive over a SATA optical drive for the XP and Vista computers respectively from the sounds of things.

I believe WhiteKnight is referring to the issue of many SATA DVD drives not being able to read Vegas 2 DVD's because of the copy protection.
But that shouldn't cause the problem you describe as it only happens when you first start the game and the disk is autheniticated.
But with 3 red X's I don't think you are going to get the game to run.
What are the X's on?
I would guess CPU .. Video card .. Shader model ??

My main computer doesn't even see the disc - nothing shows up on the D(dvd-rw) drive when I put the disc in, just the drive shows as if it is empty.
The 3 red x's is Little-Pojkes' game problem.

The software protection in Vegas 2 often can't be read by a SATA DVD drive.
If you have SATA, try hooking up an old IDE DVD drive.
But, usually the SATA's will read the disk to install, but fail to read when running the game.
