These are what I did and improved fps and the overall excitement with this game.

1. Install a new sound card (Audigy2) the old one (onboard Avance97) was giving me pain with other games too.

2. Make a new partition around 10-12 GB and install a new freash copy of WinXP

3. Install the necessary drivers (if any) for your motherboard

4. Install the newest drivers for sound card

5. Install the newest drivers for your graphics card

6. Install game and directx

7. DONT install anything else

8. Enjoy the best flight sim with fps anywhere from 22fps to 65fps!!!!!!

9. All settings maxed except water (medium), haze (min) resololtion at 1024x768 32bit (I'll try 16 bit) .

Before the above I was getting anything from 1 fps to 18fps and everything at medium!!!!

The above process cost me 39 euros for the new sound card and 2 hours to make partition, install xp, game etc. Its not bad!!!!

Now the game is superb, the sound is excellent. Im stunned. but I guess you must have an "empty" OS to run it ok!!!

Good luck!! You should try it!!!

I forgot to mention that before the process af making a new partition, there were many "unnecessary" services running that I couldn't terminate and 156MB of RAM were occupied!
Now, when I boot to tfe fresh installment, only 75 MB are occupied by services necessary for XP to run.
The game was a dissapointmnet, and I couldn't understand why. 6 months I invested so much money on a good machine and I coundnt enjoy the much anticipated LOMAC. I blamed the devs many times, but now Im sure its not their fault.
Now Im thrilled!!!!!!!
They do have to resolve some issues though!!

Thank you Eagle!

Yes, running a "lighweight" OS is a very good idea for several reasons. I use two separate HDD's, one for working and one for gaming. Both are equipped with WinXP Pro but for the "gaming HD" iv'e made a minimal configuration with no unecessary services running.

My rig is a "semi-low end" (sad to realize this after just two years of use /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif ) but I can still enjoy LOMAC with full shadows, 4x4 AA and heat blur turned on.

Consider this.

I have a fresh install of XP - 3 days old. The only background programs running are those required by windows.

I have a SoundBlaster Audigy 2.

I have a 256MB Radeon 9800Pro

I have an AthlonXP 3000+

Lock On is installed on my games drive a 120gb ATA 133 drive (of which 10 GB is currently taken up by games). I am also running the latest drivers for my hardware.

The game will not run above 17FPS at 1024*768*32 with all details full (No AA or AF).

You shouldn't run on full setting.
Try turn off mirrors!
Try medium or low water (water is fps killer)
Try haze at medium
Try buildings density (second from the top I cant remember now http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif ) to medium
Try shadows at all planar
Try 16 bit

There is no PC configuration at the moment to run the game at all high !!!

We have to live with that!

Turning off most of those options or reducing them has little or no affect.

Changing to 16bit does, however that is not a reasonable request. DOOM3 and Half-Life 2 will be more taxing on my sytem then LOMAC, and I will be able to run them at 1024*768*32 with full details.

Running a game in 16bit colour is for those with the bare minimum graphics cards.

When the developers decide to refine the engine a little, the game will run fine.

try running Lomac with priority set to high. It'll slow down everything else but should reduce stutters during the game significantly.

I have mirrors
I have medium water (tested upping it but that killed FPS immediately, even when no water was rendered /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif )
Haze is set to advanced
I have medium terrain
Full shadows
Heat blur
1024x768x32 bit color/Z buffer
4x4 anti alias

@Mr Murphy, my puter is older and less potent than yours and I'm running LOMAC at 20-30 fps at most times. Something must be wrong and it should be possible to fix it.

This ridiculous... yes, they did a fantastic flight sim, but years ahead hardware requirements.... I donâ´t understand why ubisoft gave them their ok to this "project"... even Max Payne 2 runs faster on my machine with ALL details to max and in LockOn I get 7-15 fps...

Wow, I am seeing complaints about smart devs who built a game to last into the future. What a shame. I think they did a wonderful job of scaling graphics to different machines and I say this because I have run it on several of my systems that vary in performance and hardware. Just scale back the graphics if you are having trouble. I guarantee that if you have a reasonable system, any problems you are having with frame rate are most likely how you have built out your operating system/harddrive or how you have your graphics card/drivers set up, or finally, how you have the in game options set up.

spoondigity - I could accept that arguement if my system was performing poorly on every game, but the fact is that LockOn is the only game or program that does not perform as expected. All I ask of the game is to run it at a rate of 30FPS, and on my system that should not be a problem - there is no other game out at the moment that can't do it, so why should LockOn be the exception?

My OS was installed 4 days ago, after formatting my HDDs. The graphics card drivers which I am using have no different settings than I have used previously, and considering I don't use AA or AF, they wouldn't be turned on.

Telling me that my in-game settings are the cause of my problems is quite contradictory. The fact that changing the water quality from Very High to Low, gives a 2FPS boost is not what I would call a good job of scaling the graphical engine.

The game is not that graphically revolutionary that it can't run at 1024*768*32 with all details on full. Rather it needs to be refined a long way, because currently it is a resource hog, and it has no reason to be.

[EDIT]
I have just run the game at 800*600 with all details on and my frame rate went up 1FPS! Obviously there is a lot of work required to fix the game.

I have to ask, why _shouldn't_ LockOn be the exception to this 'rule' that your system can run absolutely every game made to date at max resolution and settings? You seem to have this utter obsession with the way your game appears and how high the FPS is. Have you considered getting your panties out of a knot, and simply enjoying the fact that you are playing an unbelievably detailed sim that gets a civilian as close to the inside of the cockpit of an Su-33 as they ever will? Yes, there will be some bug fixes, and yes, there may even be some engine optimizations in the future. But until that point in time, why not just play the game and not get an ulcer staring at that FPS guage until your retinas burn?

Mr Murphy, there is something fishy going on with your system. Your performance is way lower than it should be for your specs. Most people can get a good visual quality vs performance with the game and you should to. What else do you have running in the background, and maybe posting your dxdiag as well may help.

ok, I have installed LOACS in my old rig, which is a P3 @550 MHz, 512 RAM, GeForce2 Pro 64MB, SB Audigy, Win2k Pro.

I have
Textures:High
Terrain:Medium
Civ Traffic:Yes
Haze: Advanced
Lights:All
Shadows:Full
Ter. Preload:100km
Vis. Distance: Medium
Water: Low
Effects: Full
Heat Blur:Off
game runs at 1024x768/16bit, no FSAA or AF

and I still get 9-10 FPS inside the cockpit (can get as high as 17) and ~20 in outside view. I have never experienced ANY of the problems i see reported here frequently, in other words, the game runs like charm....

I simply cannot believe people with high-end systems getting so low FPS....somethink else is running in the background that is hogging their systems down.

Firstly I am not getting an ulcer because this game won't run properly - it doesn't and there is very little I can do to change that. I am sure when the devs get a patch out it will work fine, all I am saying is that the game is a little unrefined at this stage.

CestusGWm2 - LockOn may be the most detailed cockpit simulation ever but it is not the most graphically advanced game I have come accross. I have an obesession with playing the game smoothly, I use the FPS rate as a point of reference - if I can see the gameplay as being choppy I look at the corrosponding FPS rate to see what it is actually at. Perhaps you fail to see that, perhaps you are so high up on your soap box that you don't recognise this? If I was so stressed about not getting the highest frame rate at the highest resolution, I could accept the critisism, but unfortunately, 1024*768 (the resolution I play at) is not a high resolution. It is one of the lowest in the game, the fact that it won't run smooth on the lowest resolution option in the game.

DayGlow - I'll post after this with my dxdiag.txt

DayGlow - I have run a plethora of benchmarks on my system, they are within 1% of previous tests on this system - I can only infer that there are no background tasks taking up processing power - as these results would differ.

Mr. Murphy,

You say that this game should run on your system. What I am trying to tell you, is that from my experience on several machines, and from the experience of many others on this board who have posted, it will run on your machine. What that tells me, and what I am trying to tell you, is that the only variable left is 'your machine'.

Now don't get me wrong, I know the game needs to be patched for many reasons and there is the possibility that some fix will cause your problem to go away. But, with that said, I am also saying that the game can run well on a machine such as the one you are running.

Something is not configured correctly on your machine for this game. It is unfortunate that you may have to experiment and research solutions but you can get to a point where it will run the way you require. It is a brand new game and this is part of figuring out how every possible combination of hardware in the world can be set up to be most compatible. That is the nature of PC's and games that push the envelope of graphics. I am telling you that it will be possible to run lomac when you find the heart of the problem. I am not saying it will be easy, and I am not here to tell you that Lomac, out of the box, is the most user friendly, system friendly software ever made because it is not.

At the same time (and my original point to this post) I am extremely excited that the dev team has taken on the challenge to create a game that will still be running even more spectacular graphics on newer machines that can run everything maxed out several years down the road. That is the root of my original comment which was directed mainly toward JPSelter's comment. I am seeing people bashing the devs regarding a sim that the community can enjoy for years to come. Take a look around Mr. Murphy, you can count the number of quality flight sims that have come out in the last 3 years on one hand. It might be awhile before we see another good one. I for one want this one to have the greatest longevity as possible and I am willing to wait for it to mature. When I run into bugs in the game that I know for fact are bugs, I do my best to work around them and look for solutions to the ones that are problematic. I do not fault the devs for their cause.

I do understand your frustration and hope that you find a solution to the problem you are having. I know from experience, that designing software for every pc out there is very tough and I appreciate the dev's efforts in this game. I hope that people do not lose sight of that.

That is so lame, just to blame everybody's pc.
I have an Athlon 2800 with nvidia Geforce FX5900 and 512 mb pc3200 and i'm also experiencing low framerates. If SO MANY people are experiencing this problem, it can't possibly be everybody's 'rig'. I haven't had any problems with ANY other games, including new and high specs requiring games such as Homeworld 2, Call of Duty, Max Payne 2, Zero Hour and Raven Shield.
Also, i don't think getting an entirely new partition ONLY for Lock on is an acceptable solution to about 99% of the people on this forum.
There are just a lot of probs in Lock on itself, I hope Ubisoft and/or Eagle is going to release a patch soon which will at least fix most of these problems.

I couldn't agree with both Mr Murphy and Geagis56 more. I have a decent spec machine and yet playing LO-MAC (in between the crashes) is unsatisfactory.

Every other game runs like a dream at Max settings - Call of Duty looks amazing. The only other game (apart from LOMAC) that I've had problems with is HALO which is widely accepted to be a poorly implemented console port.

LOMAC has the potential to be an excellent game - the PC needs a show case jet flight sim and this should be it. They just need to:

a) Fix the numerous bugs so you can play the game with out it crashing

b) Optimise the graphics engine. As has already been pointed out, there are better looking games out there than LOMAC that run a lot more smoothly.

No matter how "bleeding edge" a game is trying to be, there is no defending something that is quite so obviously incomplete. Roll on the first patch..

For info, my system spec is:

Asus A7N8X Deluxe V2.0 (nforce2 chipset)
AMD Barton 2500+ overclocked as a 3000+ running @ 400Mhz FSB
Cooler Master Aero 7 HSF
2x Corsair XMS PC3200 512MB DDR DIMM (dual channel) running at 200MHZ
Creative GFX 5900 Ultra 256MB (overclocked to 500 / 850) with 53.xx drivers
36.7Gb Western Digital Raptor SATA 10Krpm, 8MB Cache (Dedicated to XP + SP1)
120Gb Maxtor SATA 7200rpm, 8MB Cache (Dedicated to Game installs)
80Gb Maxtor ATA-133 7200rpm, 2MB Cache (Dedicated to Apps installs)
9.2GB SCSI Ultra 160 Fujitsu 7.2K RPM 2mb Cache (Dedicated to Swap File)
Creative Audigy 2
Lian Li PC61 Case
HiperPower 550W PSU
Hitachi CML175SXWB LCD Screen
M/S Office Keyboard
M/S Intelli Optical Mouse

Okay I know the 9800XT is the killer GFX card of the hour, but the 5900 is still no slouch, especially when over clocked to 5950 clock speeds.

Mr. Murphy I agree with you. CestusGWm2 commented and apparently does not and I might see his point if you were expecting the game to run at max settings and run like your other games but that is not the case. I have seen to many posts stating that they have dropped to the lowest levels possible and still not getting the expected frame rates.

What does not help the matter is people who post that they are getting an average of 45-60 fps at all times with AA and AF. Its simply not true. The last one I saw claiming that was basing his frame rate on an external view. Hell I can get those rates with external but I fly my plane from the cockpit.

Its only logical that if every game you own runs very well and this one runs simply awful that there may be a problem with the game. The game at slightly reduced medium settings and even at medium is not so spectacular in appearance that I would excpect performance to be so bad.

Got my game today.
Lets just day its going on ice until its fixed.
To control my dissapointment, I am trying to look at it as an investment for the future.
I agree that the graphics are far from revolutionary and that this game just sucks the lifeblood out of any half descent machine.
My machine is far from cutting edge,

XP2500+ barton
512 DDR 400
GF4 Ti4200 128meg

Then again its way better than the minimum or recommended specs as advertised on the box of the game so I would of expected it to run pretty descently.
The game has many bugs and probs as with most games that are released these days, this one for me just seems more so. Thats not terminal and Im sure they will all be fixed in time.
My gripe is that I doubt anyone that actualy went a bought this game that has a system that meets the min or recommended specs as advertised on the box could actualy even play it.
Thats not so good.

Again, obviously some problems may be helped with a patch, but I have run this game on several systems from p4's to amd's and I am getting very playable frame rates in the campaign. I know it is frustrating when 'you' specifically are the person not getting the rates you want, but I am telling you it is possible on a varied range of systems.

You do not have to get 60 fps to play this game and have it run well. If you are averaging 30fps it is extremely playable and that is what I am seeing on these systems. I am able to get 30 fps average with very very rare notable slow down. You tell me, did I cast a magic spell on any of these computers? No. Am I getting 40, 50 or 60 fps? No. Do I have to work on getting the systems to run at a good clip? Yes, and that is what many people will have to do until the game is patched up. But I am willing to accept that work to have a game that will be viable well into the future.

Attacking the makers of the game for trying to take on a massive task in their game is not the answer in my opinion. That was the point of my original post and my second post. I still stand by that.

Murphy, I notice you have a NF2 mb and I know that some drivers released for it this summer were quite buggy. Do you have the latest drivers for it?

Also your Dxdaig states your audio drivers are not digitally signed. Are they beta drivers? I'd grap the latest release from creative and see if that helps.

Also for what its worth I found the 'Loman' tweek utility pretty usefull to make the game run relatively smoothly.

FWIW i run an NForce2 board (A7N8X) and no matter what i do with graphics settings i get roughly 15fps en route in a single mission dropping to 5-7fps in target area and in campaign games.

XP2000+
Geforce 4 Ti4400
768mb ram
XP
Using the latest 3.13 NForce drivers.
Ive tried 3 different video card drivers to no effect.

As a result ive shelved the game until my PC upgrade arrives (hopefully very soon) as its unplayable at 7fps over a target.

I'm seeing so many negative comments about the game, predominantly from (a) people like me running Win98/SE/ME who simply can't run the game, and (b) people running Win2K/XP who can't get decent FPS regardless of system config.
It's clear tthe game has serious bugs, yet just occasionally some (to me, anyway) annoyingly happy guy pops up so say their game is just fine (settings notwithstanding).
I've read a lot from people stating the contents of the subdirectories don't square with what they'd expect, and I have to ask the question:
Have we all got the same game???
Ther seem to be some good arguments that indicate this may not be the case, with suspect missing files etc.
Any comments?

Taking a positive here, my systen has never been so sweet - IL2FB has never been so smooth, so a big thankyou to all the knowledgeable guys out there. It's been a real education.

Pity I still can't play the F%&*ing game, though!

spoondigity - I am not attacking the devs in any manner. I have not threatened to return the game, nor am I that frustrated the game won't run as it should. Like I said if the game doesn't run then the game doesn't run and I will have to wait until a patch is available to fix it.

I mean no disrespect but I find it hard to believe it is my system. Not because I don't think my system has faults, but because the game is a fresh release and like you have said is a huge task to undertake. I have been through a number of games in which the same has happened - Raven Shield was a similar situation, where some people on high end systems found the game to be crappy whilst some on mid range systems had better frame rates. That is why I am inclined to believe that it is the game which won't run properly and not my system.

Might I add that when Pyrforus posts about how it runs on his system (which is under the minium specs) with such details enabled it makes me mightily suspicious that the game has problems and not the individual system.

Again, I don't really care what my frame rate is as long as it is smooth - IL2 runs at around 50FPS and that is fine cos it is smooth.

DayGlow - I am using the 2.45 WHQL drivers - they are the latest stables drivers I can run as the 3.13s caused lots of problems. My sound card drivers are the latest from creative - they include EAX 4.0

Oh, you have copies of Half Life 2 and DOOM 3 already and have benchmarked your FPS on them and compared them to LOMAC fps??
WOW.
Can you send me HL2 please. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Wow, Max Payne runs well on your machine.

Well, if LOMAC was a FPS that didn't have to model complicated world physics, flight physics, hi poly environemnts, hi poly vehicles, a huge viewdistance, radar system modelling as well as a whole host of AI utilising radar, physics and flight maneouvers then yes, you might have a valid point.

Honestly, how can you even compare Max Payne FPS to LOMAC.
Silly bear.

I'll tell you what, I'll give you a web site.

www.dictionary.com (http://www.dictionary.com)

There you can learn about the word 'will' and understand how it is used in the timeframe sense.

Perhaps you might want to stop trolling the forums because it shows immediately how little you know and how much you pay attention to.

Now, now, lets not get snippy back and forth /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

At the same time I have a wait and see attitude with games such as Doom3 and HL2, and have an inkling that it will be much like the LOMAC release where a lot of people who feel they have hefty systems won't run them at super high detail the way they want it.

Well, when you make such a unfounded assumption, I have to call you on it Carl. Sorry you got all hot about it, but there is obviously something amiss with your system if you get that low fps on that high specs.
My gf4ti4200 gets 30 fps in pit on a10 campaign mission one at medium settings with water at med. No lie.
on XP1800 512 DDR Gfti4200.

Am I crazy,or did I pay $40.00 for a game for which my computer exceeds all minimum in fact all maximum requirements, and yet still does'nt work properly?

I agree totaly sir.

Satchelmouth, could you be kind enough to post a detailed discription of how you have set your game up on your system with regards to graphics settings ingame. Perhaps some screenies. If you cant host them anywhere pm me and I will host them and post them on the board on your behalf.
Also sorry if I missed this but while I am typing what are your full sys specs, including chipset and which drivers are you using?
Is your game installed as you would do any other game or did you do anything extra like make partitions and stuff.
My specs are similar to yours, slightly better actualy and I get no life out of this game so I am interested in what you have done, as maybe that can help me and others.

We can all go round in circles here, some saying it sucks and wont run, and others saying it runs fine but not ellaborating as to perhaps how or why.
Thx.

Here you go Satchelmouth - perhaps you might want to read
http://www.guru3d.com/article/Videocards/35/11/

And then a quote from the LO:MAC review at gamespot

"It doesn't matter if you have a P4 3.2 GHz machine with one gig of RAM and a Radeon 9800 XT; it will bog down at quite a few points in the game (bog down: defined as frame rates dropping into the single digits)".

That doesn't sound like the game runs smooth - obviously there are a few teething problems.

Okay, then why the hell do I get a framerate into 80s when looking at my plane from the outside and below while in the cockpit it drops to 10 or even less.

I'm a crappy pilot, but one hell of a shot.

I've just upgraded my machine from a Athlon 1.4Mhz to 1.9MHz and 512 more memory.

I have an Ati Radeon 9700 PRO and my FPS only when up to around 12-15fps on the runway from 9-12fps and 25-40fps when flying from 15-25.

I am wondering what effect my SB Live has on the framerate. When ever I explode an object, my game fps goes single digit.

Are all these problems caused by old crappy sound cards? I'm going to buy an Audigy 2 next week and I'll keep you all posted.

A simple way to see if the sound is the issue is to simply turn off the sound and look for a difference in framerates that way - not sure if there is an ingame menu for that in LO:MAC or if you'll have to go through Win/DirectX to disable.

PS: I'm thinking you're Athlon is running at 1.9Ghz, not Mhz eh? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

A note about 32bit or 16bit.
Because the sim uses mainly a fairly non-vibrant set of colors; many green tints and camo there's no reason to leave your settings at 32bit (except maybe for dusk and dawn graphics) if 16bit runs much better because it is very likely you wont even see any difference.

When it drops to 10FPS or even less from 80FPS, thats a teething problem.

FPS: Ctrl+Backspace in upleft corner!

By the way guys try to use Ctrl+F1 to see only the HUD. It improves the FPS counter. Try it when you are in busy situations

A drop of that many FPS should not occur. Yes it should drop but not by that big of a margin.

Teething problem, issues found in an initial release that are fixed throughout the games development.

ie. In Raven Shield, when it first came out, there was a huge performance drop whenever a smoke grenade was deployed. The devs managed to optimise the code so that there was still a performance hit but it was in no way as severe as previously, making the gameplay a lot smoother.

I find it all a bit suspicious as well, (luckily I can run it fine-ish at medium with my P4 2Ghz and Geforce 4 ti 4600)

However looking up from the cockpit can give no reference to the kind of FPS one would expect looking forward. It only draws blue sky and possibly canopy scratches.
That's almost like comparing the menu screen fps with the ingame fps. (not quite but you get my point) /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
