I'm officially exhausted. I had 2 days off from work and I put that to good use and re-designed The Genie's Lamp. After all the comments and complaints about the frames set-up, I caved into the wishes of you fans. Hey, I'm a genie...aren't I SUPPOSED to grant wishes? :O)

Anyway, feel free to check out the new design (which isn't finished by the way). And let me know what you think, post suggestions, whatever.

And to those select few who've volunteered to help out on the site, send me a pm over at the Genie's Tavern and we'll work out a schedule and a plan of action.

As for me...that's it. I'm DONE for the day. *whew* :O)

Great redesign! I love what you did with the lamp!

I only have 1 *minor* complaint and it may only be because I am using IE7 beta. But the background tiles (not the one running down the left and right side, but the aztec looking tiles) make the white menu text unreadable. Everything else is great! Thanks for listening to us http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

edit: (IE7 uses a different default font than IE6)

Okay, okay...I haven't gone to bed JUST yet. :O)

Yeah, I'm still considering changing that tile set a bit (the readability was bugging me too in some places). But those are things that I can play around with easily just by re-naming that tile. I'll come up with something though.

Oh yeah....and thanks. *grin*

One small advice, instead of settinh "hard" width (width = "800"), why not using proportion?
Like width ="95%" , so no matter what width the screen of reader is set to, the table with the text is filling 95 (or 90) percent of screen width

For example, the page with Dungeon strat, changes would be:
change width="800"
with width="95%"

and for columns:
width="400" --> width="50%"
200 --> 25%
160 --> 20%
133/134 --> 16/17%

This can be done very quickly with text editor like Ultraedit for example (using "replace in files")

Nope, they're not up yet. That's number one on my list for today though.

@Chavv
Yeah, I know HOW to do it...but it's more of a problem with the rest of the layout. It really affects how text, links, images get thrown around and off center when you adjust the percentage. With a set size, I can make sure that things line up exactly as I want them. Yes, I'm sure there's a way to do that using percentages too....but I'm not that good with html. I rarely look at the actual html code.

Excellent job, it really is a much better and eaiser page to navigate now. I really like how the creatures are laid out.

Only minor complaint I have is the size of the text for the towns. Their size is smaller than the other text around it, makes it a bit cluttered and hard to see. Obviously a very minor issue. In any case kudos on a job well done.

Okay, H5 is completely up with the sole exceptions of the Artifacts, Histories, Buildings and Strategies. Otherwise, the site layout is final. And yes...I'm pooped.

I'll finish up the last of the h5 items tomorrow, then its on to h1-4. Yippee! *yawn*

If anybody encounters any problems with the site (due to different browsers and such) please, let me know. 'Nite all.

Hmmmm...Labyrinth got the same thing. He thinks it might be because the background image is too large. That's just weird. *sigh* I'll try breaking up the image...maybe that'll fix it.

Truthfully guys, I'm not familiar in the least little bit with other browsers (like Firefox), so any help you can give will be some help in working out problems with conflicts.

I can most likely pinpoint the problem.

The page was done with MS-frontpage and as such its nearly only compatible with MS-products.

It can easily be fixed by changing editingprogram for the webpage or manually freecode the MS-specific stuff away.

LOL. Yeah, I'll get right on that Lab. In between diaper changes, 14 hour shifts at work and maintaining the site. *grin*

I am acutally teaching myself XHTML. But it's slow going. I know the basics, but it's the advanced tricks and twists that I need to learn. Until I do, I can't come close to doing what I WANT to do. So until then, I use FrontPage and tweek the code as I need to. What can I say, I work with the tools that I've got. *grin*

As for Dreamweaver, yeah...I've got that too. I'm just not very proficient with it. Maybe it's time to start working with that instead.

That is the problem. FP is probably the worst web page editor ever created. It makes such hopless HTML code that is so hopless invalid that most of the ROBOTs will get sick of it and the browser too in trying to auto rectify it.

Well I always code XHTML with a notepad... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif go wounder why. GoLive is a tool that did some acceptable job true. But I totaly quit the WISIWIG editors since long.

Don't worry Justice...I only understood about half of what WizIce was saying. *grin*

I'm a complete noob in terms of being a "webmaster". I've been making pages for several years now, but I've been making them simply from the visual aspects. Not until about a month or two ago did I really start looking at the code of the pages I was making. I simply didn't care that much. If it looked good on my computer...I was happy. But now that I'm out on my own...I thought I should understand how/why my pages look so different on OTHER browsers/computers. I was never even taking different screen resolutions into consideration before. I'm getting better though...slowly, but it's still progress. *grin*

Well, I was seeing all the US-based heroes sites disappearing off the net. Astralwizard, Portals, and even h3trio (where I previously worked) all shut down. So I started posting some simple pages on my family's homepage just as a reference source for me and my friends. Simple detailed stats weren't available on the net anywhere at the time. Anyway, I enjoy making pages and designing the site, so it's a hobby. Then Angelspit (from Celestial Heavens) suggested that I look into my own domain. And The-Genies-Lamp.com was born. :O) Yes, it's a bit hectic around here, but I do web-work as a way to relax. Clearer? *grin*

I agree that it takes time to get used to the (X)HTML code. But once you have learned the basics and use thw w3c reference page as documentation (I still do after +10 web design) you get better.

CSS is a great step IMO, if you can do it you can archive really great things without messing with the (X)HTML code.

The (X) is also a great step. It forces to make a bit cleaner HTML and it greatly improves ROBOTs access (i.e. Google, MSM, Yahoo, etc.)

Phil McCrum (The Astral Wizard himself...and the source of the Hero "Astral" in the game) finally got tired of spending all his time working with the site and never finding time to acutally PLAY these games that he loves. So he decided to shut it down. He was very gracious in the fact that he dearly didn't want to see all his hard work (and the work of his staff) go to waste, so he handed out his sites pages to several of the other Heroes sites on the web. H3trio (my former site) was one of the hosts of the Astral Wizards pages, as was Ungoliants' Portals of Might and Magic site. Unfortunately, BOTH of THOSE sites have gone the way of the dodo as well. The only other sites to get some of the Astral Wizard pages were Celestial Heavens and Map Haven. DragonSister from Map Haven got a large portion of the maps they used to host (and she still has them). While Celestial Heavens....I'm honestly not sure what they acquired from AW. You'd have to ask Angelspit that one. IIRC, they garnered some of the walkthrus that the Quebec Dragon did. (but I could be mistaken on that part...it was quite a while back).

C_h_u_c_k_l_e_s

It's not too bad. I'm paying about 50$ a year for the domain and the other goodies I get from my host. I know there are cheaper ways to go, but for all the leisure-time I get out of it, 50$ is pretty cheap for months of entertainment. :O)

As for Flash, yeah, I know quite a bit of that as well. I used to do some banners and such for H3trio back in the day. I haven't messed with it in well over a year though. I haven't really felt a need. But who knows, I may re-introduce myself to it. I can see some uses for it in terms of a site-map and some other things. We'll see.
