Perhaps its the choice of many armies because its cheap. The military cant afford every weapon they might want and the M16 is a good mix of firepower, cost and reliability. I however dont think its that good in CQB and on most maps you do come in close to your enemy. The M16 is designed for the soldier to be able to hit enemies farther away than grenade range i think. Its not primarily used for CQB. SMGs are designed for CQB.

The only reason so many other nations use the M16 is due to the fact that they can't produce their own assault rifles domestically, find it's cheap and/or they got the surplus M16's free in a larger weapons deal. Such as an added bonus to buying missles, helicopters, etc. It can be argued for decades about guns in the game and in real life that are better than the M16 and it's several variants.
As far as SMG's and CQB go. Militaries will likely use carbine rifles like M4's for CQB barring certain situations. Since pistol cartridges mainly the 9mm round have problems with defeating body armor and more people seem to be wearing. Even domestic law enforcement have run into problems with using weapons chambered in pistol cartridges against armored criminals.

hmm, lets think. How good do u suppose an m16 would be against a tank?
But i do love the m16 its probably my most used gun in raven shield.
in this job if you have to say "oops" it's to late.

the m16 is designed for soldiers further back as segmentet said, the m16's are not good for cqb, they might have range and firepower but that isnt what you need when you have 14 terrorists with hostages in 1 room, u need a smaller tougher gun eg. the G36C or another powerful bullpup designed wepaon, desert eagles are a good runner up as well as they can penetrate even the toughest armour, m16's are primaruily used by countries who are looking for a good all round weapon. its better than a AK47 but crapper then a M4

It wasnt designed to be, its an assault rifle, not a carbine
they

Your comparing apples and oranges now. Its basicaly the equivialnt to saying i cant slice this cake well with an axe.
- or another powerful bullpup designed wepaon.
The g36 isnt a bullpup. In fact bull pups are generaly bad for cqb as they take longer to reload
desert
- eagles are a good runner up as well as they can
- penetrate even the toughest armour
Then you have to worrie about over penetration. you dont want the bullet to go through a hostage taker and hit a hostage. 9mms and 45s are preferred by most teams. Such as the sig 226, or colt m1911. or a glock.

The M4 is the exact same thing as a m16 but in a smaller design. Its firing mechanisms are the same it just has a shorter stock barrel and maybe main parts are shorter, not sure off the top of my head.

Yep. It's just a carbine. Short 14.5" barrel w/ the stepcut for the M203, and a lightweight profile barrel under the handguards. As well as the Colt patented M4 feedramps built into the upper reciever for improved reliability. As for shorter parts, IIRC the buffer and spring is shorter, because of the collapsible stock.
